General Information
A typical day
Port St Mary is a small fishing port in the south
of the Isle of Man. The mission is mainly
attended by local children and teenagers,
although a few holidaymakers come too. In
recent years the mission has grown
considerably, with up to 400 on the register,
and an average of over 200 attending each day.
Things may change, but in general
this is the way that a typical day
works. The fortnight is pretty
intense, and you really do need to
make the most of free time and
sleeping. Here's what to expect...
The team of around 65 people
covers a wide range of ages and
backgrounds, coming from England,
Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle
of Man and sometimes further
afield. We have a good mix of
returning team and new team each
year, and the team also includes a
few who work for SU and some who
have just completed a GAP year
working with SU on the island. (For
more info see www.sumt.im)
You'll be allocated to an age group (under 4s; 3-4s; 5-6s; 7-8s; 9-10s; 1112s; 13+) and most of your work will be with them under the leadership
of one or two experienced team members. A few team members have
different responsibilities such as administration, catering, working with
adults, practical support etc.
Most of the team stay in Mallmore, a large comfortable house which is
the home of Scripture
Union on the island. Team
times, meals, prayer
meetings and some
activities take place there,
but many activities are
held outside and in other
locations in the Port
including the Town Hall,
the primary school and
local churches.

It’s a very full programme, so by
the end of the two weeks you'll be tired, but you’ll:
 make loads of friends
 grow in your faith
discover skills you didn’t know you had
go home (probably reluctantly!) knowing that
you’ve made a difference.
What will I do?
You come to serve, and there
are loads of ways you can use
your gifts to enable the children
and young people who come to
meet with God, from practical
every-day things to presenting
up front, or helping create an
event. Here are some of the
things you may find yourself
doing...
² making friends with the
children/teens
² keeping an attendance
register
² helping with the bookstall
² helping in a teaching session
² being part of a drama team
² organising a game
² designing and running a quiz activity
² leading children's songs
² leading worship for the team
² leading discussions
² carrying resources
to a location
² digging seats on the
beach for the
beach service
² washing dishes
² suggesting ideas in
planning sessions
² praying a lot!
If some of the above seem a bit daunting, don’t
worry - tasks will be allocated according to gifts
and experience, to allow you to serve in areas
you feel comfortable in, but please come with a
willing attitude - you may well discover skills you
didn’t know you had - and remember there are
plenty people to help if you need guidance or
ideas.
