First rehearsals are as follows:
Monday, August 21, 2017– Orchestra
Tuesday, August 22, 2017 – Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and *Concert Band.
*If you are interested in Concert Band only and are a woodwind/brass/percussion player and not a music major, you need not
sign up for an audition time. Register for MUS 288 and attend the first rehearsal. Placement information will be distributed at
the first rehearsal.

2. The audition will take approximately 6 minutes
3. Please be early for the audition—leave cases backstage.
4. Be prepared to play something that demonstrates your tone, phrasing and musicality, as well as something that
demonstrates range, articulation and technique.
5. Sight-reading will be an important part of the audition.

1. Piano auditions for placement in large ensembles (University Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band,
Concert Band, Choirs, and Opera Scenes) will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017 in Frasier 256.
2. Piano majors (BM, BME, BA, MM, and DA with a GA) will be advised to audition for placement in a large ensemble by
their keyboard area advisor based on institutional need and degree program requirements.
3. Scores are available on the Keyboard Area bulletin board on Monday, August 15, 2016.
4. Be prepared to play one selection from the standard piano repertoire as well as the orchestral excerpt and the choral work.
Prepare the orchestral excerpt with the metronome marking given. Be prepared to play the accompaniment of the vocal score
and the vocal parts as open score in any combination of voices.

1. Auditions are on Friday, August 18, 2017 in Frasier 249.
2. Make sure you appear at the scheduled time.
3. The audition will take approximately 6-7 minutes.
4. Please be early for the audition—tune your instrument before entering the audition room and leave cases in the hall.
5. Students must download and print their music from DropBox. Please click on this link to access your music for the
auditon. If you are having trouble downloading the packet, please contact Jennifer Beck at [email protected]
6. The auditioning committee will select excerpts from the pieces distributed through the above link. We expect accurate pitch,
rhythm and dynamics, good tone quality and appropriate style. Acceptance into the orchestra and seating will depend upon
the quality of your audition.

Audition Material:
You do not need to bring music to the audition.
Students will be expected to sing a familiar tune and vocalize on scales and arpeggios.
Sight-reading and some tonal memory recall will be requested.
Choose the appropriate appointment type, read all options and click on the appropriate option:
All incoming undergrad female students should audition with Dr. Burgett (Frasier 123B)
All students, male and female, wishing to audition for the Chamber Choir should sign up directly with Dr. Burgett
(Frasier 123B).
All incoming undergrad male students should audition with Dr. Darrough (Frasier 103).
All incoming graduate students should audition with Dr. Darrough (Frasier 103).
Returning Men’s and Women’s Glee Club students wishing to audition for the Concert Choir must audition with Dr.
Darrough (Frasier 103).
Returning members of the Concert Choir, Men’s Glee Club or Women’s Glee Club do not need to re-audition.
There is no audition required for University Singers, MUS 282. Register for the class through URSA and attend the first
rehearsal.
Students wishing to register for a specific ensemble may do so prior to auditions but may need to change to their assigned choir
afterwards. Students may delay registering for an ensemble until auditions are completed on the Friday of the first week of
classes.

Singers should prepare two pieces, aria or art song, at least one of which must be in English. You may sing arias from the fall
season (Adamo’s Little Women, Portner’s Little Prince, Williamson’s Happy Prince) if you choose. Per usual, scores will be
available on the reserve shelf in the Skinner Music Library.
A pianist will be provided.

2. All of the audition content will be posted online and you will need to fill out your information form online as well.
3. Music will not be mailed.
4. Callbacks for Vocal Lab and NoCoVo will be announced at the Tuesday evening Jazz Orientation Concert (7pm, Frasier 90),
and the callbacks will require your attendance from 2pm to 4:30pm on Thursday, August 24th, 2017. The callbacks will
consist of singing the two ensemble part-learning excerpts from your initial audition along with varying configurations of
other singers.
5. Final results for all vocal jazz ensemble placements will be posted in Frasier Hall next to the Jazz Studies Office (room 58) at
8pm, Thursday, August 24th.

Instrumental Jazz Auditions
Jazz Orientation Concert

1. Sign up for an audition using the links below, or by clicking here.
2. Pick up a copy of the audition music outside the Jazz Studies Office around two weeks before classes start. Music will not be
mailed.
3. Drummers will use a Jazz Department drum set for their audition. Please provide your own cymbals, sticks, and mallets.
4. Students wishing to audition for jazz chair or combo will be asked to improvise. Be prepared to play a piece from the
Aebersold Rhythm section “standard tunes” records. Students may always choose a rhythm changes standard or a blues
standard. The other options for tunes will be posted with the music outside the Jazz Studies office.
5. Results will be posted after the Tuesday night welcome concert
