TEAM HISTORY
It began with a sand-lot baseball game between Ursuline Academy and the local elementary
school in 1936. Children wanted to compete, but their skills were lacking. Mr. Al Carpy
stepped in to fill the void and teach local children not only the athletic skills necessary to
play baseball, football, basketball, track and boxing but also the “life skills” of teamwork,
sacrifice, sportsmanship and character that would last a lifetime.
With the cooperation of the schools and the backing of the community Mr. Carpy continued
coaching all five sports until his death in 1960 at age 74. For 24 years, most of the
equipment, uniforms, balls, bats and helmets were paid for by Mr. Carpy and additional
funds were raised by occasional spaghetti feeds and rummage sales.
Discipline, sportsmanship and character development were the hallmark of Carpy Gang
during Mr. Carpy’s tenure. The coaches who have followed in his footsteps have carried on
that tradition and take pride in instilling those values in the youth of today.
