Electric fields are a non-contact force (a field force)
Define:
Electric fields are caused by point charges. If there is a point charge Q, we can detect an electric
field around it by placing a tiny positive test charge (we will call it “q”) at various points in space
near Q and measuring the force the test charge feels, from that we can determine the strength of the
electric field

*please remember, this is a vector which means that we need to determine direction first (the
electric field always travels away from positive and toward negative), then use the equation to find
out the magnitude of the electric field. We are dividing by q only because the charge of it doesn’t
matter, since its purpose was to test the electric field at Q.

Electric Potential Energy
We have already learned about three types of Energy:
Now, we are adding in another, electrical potential energy.
In the same way that electric force is related to gravitational force; electric potential energy is
related to gravitational potential energy…

The electric field itself is constant, however, a particle has different potential energy at different

travelled in a constant electric field…now lets talk about how to determine voltage from a point
charge…
Point charges also have electric fields, and in order to draw them, we need to look back at the
previous electric fields that we drew: What is the voltage of points along the same horizontal axis?

In the same way that a topographical map shows you areas that are the same altitude (or, in terms

Voltage, unlike Electric Field, is NOT a vector! So if you have MORE than one charge you don’t need
to use vectors. Simply add up all the voltages that each charge contributes since voltage is a
SCALAR.
