Weekly Update December 17, 2016 Democracy Voucher Program – Honest Elections Moves Forward Beginning January 3rd, Democracy Vouchers will be mailed to Seattle residents. The Honest Elections Initiative (I-122), which Seattle voters passed by an overwhelming margin in November 2015, allows Seattle’s citizens, and lawful permanent residents to spend up to $100 on races for the Seattle City Council and City Attorney. It’s imperative that you do not throw them away. Watch our Facebook video on the topic. One Week Left - The MLKCLC Is Hiring a New Staff Person We are looking for someone who is great with numbers but also has a passion for unions and organizing; social justice and community engagement. Resumes will be accepted for another week. View the job posting. When: Posting closes December 23rd. Where: Resumes, cover letters and professional references to [email protected] Senator Rebecca Saldaña LD 37 We fight, we win! Thank you to all of the labor activists who bombarded the King County Council with calls last week in support of Rebecca Saldaña. Ms. Saldaña was appointed to the Senate position in the 37th LD, by unanimous vote. This position was especially important because Ms. Saldaña has been a true leader fighting income inequality and supporting workers in their struggle for justice. Former 37th LD Senator and labor champion Pramila Jayapal, who vacated the seat after her successful congressional campaign, had also endorsed our newly appointed Senator. Next Delegate Meeting: January 18th The MLKCLC will not have a delegate meeting for the month of December. Take time over the holidays to rest and restore because 2017 promises to be an active year for the delegates of this Council. January will be busy with votes on I-873 (police accountability), the Council’s strategic plan, and organizing for the January 21st #WomensMarch on Seattle. When: Wednesday, January 18th, 6:00 p.m. Where: Hall 1, Seattle Labor Temple, 2800 1st Avenue 1 MLKCLC Executive Board Actions Recently several actions have been taken in support of our members and the community. The board signed on to a letter in support of Solid Ground Access drivers (ATU 587 members), brought forward by Teamsters Local 117. Access drivers provide an invaluable service providing mobility for our disabled persons. They deserve a living wage, healthcare and retirement benefits and to be protected from displacement, due to low wages. The Board endorsed and signed on to a letter in support of Move-in Fee restrictions that were being debated in the Seattle City Council and last week. Subsequently the legislation was passed, gaining a huge victory for homeless advocates which include, a reduction on the amounts collected for security deposit and nonrefundable fees; payment plans for move-in costs; penalties for landlord violations; the city is required to do outreach into limited English communities to provide this information; and more. The reforms begin in the month of January. Burien City Council: Sanctuary City Vote, Monday 12/19 The Council will discuss the need for legislation to make Burien a “Sanctuary City” at Monday’s meeting. The MLKCLC is looking for members, living in Burien, who are willing to speak in support of Sanctuary City legislation. Contact Katie Garrow to take part in this important discussion. When: Monday, December 19th, 7:00 p.m. Where: Council Chambers, Burien Town Square, 400 SW 152nd St Stay Connected! Looking for more local labor news?
