Three of the District’s best honoured
Three of Sydney Local Health District’s
leading lights have been named in the
annual Australia Day honours list.
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital’s head of
radiology, Richard Waugh, was awarded an
Order of Australia medal (OAM) in the
General Division for service to radiology as
an interventional radiologist and educator.
The deputy chairman of the Sydney Local
Health District board, Barry Catchlove, was
named a Member of the Order of Australia
(AM) for significant service to medical
administration, particularly in health, to
international business co-operation, and to
education.
Haematologist Doug Joshua was also
awarded an AO for distinguished service to
medicine, and to medical education, as an
haematologist and academic, to myeloma
research, and to public health organisations.
Dr Waugh has been at RPA since he
completed his internship in 1972 and has
been head of the department for more than
20 years.

His focus has been on interventional
radiology, a specialty providing minimally invasive image-guided diagnosis and treatments.
“I am very proud to receive the award on behalf of radiology, interventional radiology and the
hosptial and to be recognised in this way,” he said.
Dr Catchlove’s distinguished and varied career in healthcare covers a range of clinical, medical
administration and board appointments and spans more than 40 years.
For Professor Joshua, the award comes after 45 years at RPA, where he has helped the hosptial
grow into an internationally recognised research institution and “the jewel in the crown of the NSW
health system”.

“The beauty of Prince Alfred is that there is an ethos and an atmosphere that is second to none. It’s
a hospital that’s free of prejudice, that respects innovation, that respects equality, that is not driven
by financial rewards … it has a very collegiate atmosphere.”
The District’s Chief Executive, Dr Teresa Anderson, said the honours were great recognition for the
work of three highly esteemed professionals.
“I would like to congratulate Dr Waugh, Professor Joshua and Dr Catchlove on their service to
Sydney Local Health District and to providing the very best patient care for all. Their passion,
dedication and knowledge make them all truly deserving of these honours,” Dr Anderson said.
