ESCANABA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION
COMPARTMENT 91 ENTRY YEAR: 2008
Compartment Acreage: 1897
County Delta
Last Revision: August 6, 2006
Stand Examiner: Dan McNamee, FMFMD; Bill Rollo and Craig Albright, Wildlife Division.
Legal Description: T43N-R22W, Sections 5, 8, and 17
Management Goals:
Soil and Topography: Topography ranges from nearly level to slight and moderate slopes. Soils are poorly drained
nonacid organic soils, poorly drained loamy soils, well drained loams, and poorly drained loams.
Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Compartment 91 is centrally
located in a larger contiguous state-owned block of land. Primary uses are for forest and wildlife production and
outdoor recreation in the form of hunting and trapping.
Unique, Natural Features: The Rapid River and Deadhorse Creek join together as they flow through this
compartment.
Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None
Special Management Designations or Considerations: Regenerating over-mature Aspen stands, maintenance and
improvement of the northern hardwoods, spruce–fir and other softwood types. Maintenance of wildlife habitat in the
form of winter cover, forage producing trees, and grass openings.
Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: (See Fisheries Biologist’s comments).
Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Ecological Context: This compartment is within a broad plain of loamy ground
moraine. Historically, ridge tops were covered with northern hardwood forests of sugar maple, beech, hemlock, cedar,
and yellow birch. Between the ridges, swamps of cedar, tamarack, black spruce, or bog were common. Small knolls
within wetlands were often dominated by hemlock and white pine. Wind throw was the most common natural
disturbance regime. During the past 100 years aspen forest increased greatly and hemlock and white pine declined due
to early-day logging practices.
Recommendations: This compartment has a large acreage of northern hardwood forest which shows variable
regeneration density in the understory. Some stands are mediocre while others show very good seedling and sapling
development. Several of these stands will undergo thinnings or selection cuts this decade. Maintenance of uncommon
tree species (such as yellow birch, black cherry, and upland cedar) is recommended for enhancement of wildlife
habitat. Moreover, maintenance of cedar in aspen and balsam poplar cuts has been recommended to provide winter
cover for deer, bobcats, fisher, marten, and other species that are found in this landscape. The Rapid River and
Deadhorse Creek flow through the southern portion of the compartment and join together there. The triangle of land
between the 2 water courses is designated as a Special Conservation Area where a mature forest condition is desired
and natural processes will be allowed to operate. Several grass openings in this compartment were constructed 10-15
years ago for wildlife habitat. Although herbaceous plantings and mowing are not a high priority, some of these
openings will remain prescribed for treatment as potential projects for wildlife organizations to undertake.
Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of medium-textured
glacial till. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Ordovician Trenton Limestone
underlies the glacial drift. The Trenton is quarried for stone to the south, near Rapid River. This Compartment was not
previously leased for metallic exploration, but nearby areas were leased in the past. A gravel pit is located in Section 6
and there is potential. No economic oil and gas production has been found in the UP.
Vehicle Access: The Engineer Road and the North and South Deadhorse Roads provide access into this compartment.
At this time the bridge that crosses the Deadhore Creek via the south Deadhorse Road is closed to vehicular traffic
because the bridge is unsafe. Although it is closed to conventional 2 wheel vehicles, 4 wheeler traffic and foot traffic is
allowed.
Survey Needs: None
Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Hunting and trapping. ORV and snowmobile use in this area is moderate
and largely a result of hunter and trapper use.
Fire Protection: The above mentioned roads provide access to this area in the case a fire should ever start in this area.
The type of timber located in this area keeps the potential of a large fire low to moderate.

: Stand was treated in 1992. There is good maple regeneration is 10-15' tall. Not the best qauality. Create some canopy gaps to release
established regen. Sale will have to be put up with the area to the north. Contact Gwinn, put up as additional timber when stands 56 & 71 of
compartment 92 is being treated.
