Proposal Description
R
Purpose of the proposal
To introduce a new subject “Bridging Programmes” and a single code (BRDG) to apply to all courses within Bridging
Programmes certificates, and to discontinue the prefixes ESOL, FOUN and PREP.
Justification
For receiving academic departments in this and other universities a single prefix would provide more clarity on
programme origin when interpreting transcripts; further, the term BRDG for Bridging is more self explanatory than
FOUN and PREP and how those codes are distinguishable from each other.
A number of Certificate in University Preparation (CUP) and Certificate in Foundation Studies optional courses appear on
both schedules, to the extent that all Foundation Studies Arts students, many CUP science students and an increasing
number of others have a significant number or even a majority of their courses currently coded in the other schedule.
Additionally, there are also now courses written for both certificates, in which the decision of which code to place them
under was arbitrary.
The Certificate in English for Tertiary Studies is a Bridging programme in its own right, giving entry to undergraduate or
postgraduate programmes. Its ownership should be made clear, and distinguishable from ESOL courses that are offered
through many formal and informal training institutions across the full range of English language proficiency, or from the
ESOL credit and non credit support programmes offered to undergraduate students in a number of NZ Universities.
Acceptability
Bridging Programmes Staff, UC Quality Assurance staff, UC Internal Communications group (College Academic
Managers, Liaison, Publications, Student Admin., International Office, AQuA representatives.) have all been contacted
regarding this proposal. They agree that would be of benefit to students, employers and International staff to combine the
Bridging programmes under one subject.
Proposed new regulations and prescriptions (append to the Calendar Form at the end of Section A)
See “Calendar Form” next page. Note that minor name changes in some courses will be required, and will be applied for
under separate documentation. Note also that in the official course catalogue all Bridging Programmes courses will be
published under the subject “Bridging Programmes”
