A team is a group of up to 10 friends, family
members or coworkers of all ages. If you
organize a workplace team, get management

carries weight with employees and will help
as a recruitment tool to get more of your
coworkers involved.
As team captain, you will…
• recruit team members (up to 10 people
per team)
• ensure that your team members register
and pay the registration fee ($10 each)
• disseminate information to your team
• encourage team members to raise funds
• maintain communication and
enthusiasm among team members
• organize and lead your team on event
day
• keep track of how much money your
team raises

Set a fundraising goal for your team and
meet it by asking for individual donations,
holding fundraising events and offering
incentives to top team fundraisers—be
creative! Inside this brochure are lots of
fundraising ideas.
Registering team members
1. Pick up a Team Captain Packet [including
this brochure, sample letter to potential team
members, team roster, donor lists (one for
each team member) and donor receipts]. All
of these are also available online.
2. Choose a name for your team, write the
team name on each donation envelope, and
give an envelope to each member.
3. Register members in one of these ways:
»» By mail or in person: Multiply the number
of team members by $10 (which covers an
event T-shirt for those registering by June
10 and lunch at the event), write a check
for that amount, and mail or bring it, along
with a copy of your team roster, to
Mississippi Valley Conservancy
1206 Norplex Dr. Suite 6
La Crosse, WI 54601
We will enter your team members’ names
into the event database.
»» Online: Register and pay for your whole
team at once or ask team members to registerindividually under your team name at
mississippivalleyconservancy.org/TTC.
Event dos and don’ts
Although the Conservancy welcomes visitors
and recreation on its properties, please follow
these guidelines for the protection of native
plants and animals and the enjoyment of
participants in the Trail Trek Challenge and our
properties’ neighbors.
• Don’t use alcoholic beverages or tobacco on
the trails.
• Don’t bring pets to the event, even if they are
well behaved and on leash.
• Don’t throw balls, Frisbees, or other objects.
• Do carry out what you carry in.
• Do stay on the trails.
• Do be respectful of the land and of other
teams.
Fundraising for the Trail Trek Challenge
Fundraising tips
• Break your goal down by team member. The quickest and easiest way to meet your goal is to
ask each team member to raise a specific dollar amount.
• Donate. Make a donation yourself to get the ball rolling and ask friends to match or beat that
amount.
• Tell your personal story. Let people know about your connection to the Conservancy and why
conserving the land is important to you.
• Plan an event. Throw a homemade spaghetti dinner party or hold bake sales, car washes
or yard cleanups. Host a fundraiser at your workplace or at a cooperating restaurant (see
possibilities below and visit restaurants or their websites for more information).
• Applebee’s
• Culver’s
• Subway
• Arby’s
• Dublin Square Irish Pub
• T.G.I. Friday’s
& Eatery
• Buffalo Wild Wings
• Texas Roadhouse
•
Outback
Steakhouse
• Burrachos Fresh
• Wendy’s
Mexican Grill
• Panera Bread
• The Wine Guyz
• Ask face-to-face. Walk around your office or neighborhood, visit family members and friends
and ask for support.
• Spread the word. Send a letter or email to everyone you know. We have material you can pick
up or download to help promote the Challenge.
• Start a competition between friends on Facebook.
• Use Twitter to tell friends about the event and your team.
• Create a # for your Instagram account and post photos of fundraising events.
• Stay in contact.
»» Communicate with your team to help maintain excitement.
»» Have your team choose a team name.
»» Create a team flag you can carry on your Trail Trek hikes.
»» Consider weekly emails with fundraising events and status updates.
»» Hold regular team meetings. Staying connected keeps team enthusiasm and momentum up
and gives everyone an opportunity to share their successes and fundraising ideas.
Submitting donations obtained by your team
