Episode 8 – “The Deal with Jay”
Characterizing Jay – In this episode, Sarah describes “the deal with Jay” in a variety of ways. As you listen, take
notes on the different aspects of Jay’s personality: the way he speaks; the activities he engages in; and what
other people say about him. Underline your examples of Sarah’s direct characterization (when it’s a direct
quote of her own observations), and don’t underline your examples of indirect characterization (the ones that
come from other characters or your own observations).
1. Sarah specifically shows us examples of Jay’s tone in important situations, particularly when being
cross-examined by Adnan’s lawyer and when Sarah speaks with him personally. How does Sarah
describe his tone? How would you describe his tone?
2. There are many ways of characterizing somebody, and some important ones are listed below. Do your
best to write down as many relevant details as you can for each category.

Jay’s Tone – Using specific adjectives, explain the difference between Jay’s tone and Christina Gutierrez’s
tone.
3. What effect do you think the tones had on the jury? If their tones had been different, do you think the
outcome of the trial might have been different?
4. If you can, explain a time in your life when your tone has been especially crucial in the outcome of your
conversation.
Diagramming Jay – Complete the diagram of Jay’s character, including as many details as you can about the
words he uses, his physical description, his actions, and what people say about him.
