Sewing Classes
Learn Your Machine
Join in this class created
for our beginner sewers!
You will learn how your
machine works, how to
thread it, wind a bobbin,
and choose the correct
stitch for your project. You will also learn how
to take care of your machine and how to clean
and oil it, which will save you time and money!
Sewing classes do not have time allotted for
learning your machine but this class will get you
ready for any class you choose. This class is a
pre-requisite for Beginner Sewing. One 3-hour

Beginner Sewing
Experience how much fun it is to
create garments and other projects
when you discover the art of sewing!
Whether you are new to sewing or
wish to update your skills, this class
will help you become a confident
sewer while you learn basic sewing
techniques. You’ll learn how to
select and sew the best seams and seam finishes
for different weights and types of fabric, how to
sew with knits, insert a zipper, sew with a twin
needle to create a double stitched hem, how to
mark and sew darts, and how to read commercial
patterns. You'll also learn about various threads,
needles, stitches, presser feet and more. Practice
your skills by first sewing a decorative pillow
with darts, a zipper and a flat fell seam. Your
second project, yoga pants, will give you an
opportunity to learn how to fit a pattern as well
as sew knit fabrics. Due to the popularity of this
class we encourage you not to delay signing

Sewing Club is designed for people who are new to their
machines and who would like to learn to get the most out
of it. This is a one year (9 month) program. Throughout
the year we will cover a variety of topics that will teach the
most important techniques and features of your machine.
Sewing Club is FREE for one year with machine purchase;
$250 if your machine was not purchased from A Great
Notion if space is available. Pre-registration is required.
Please bring a 2” binder with you to your first class as we
will be completing a workbook, giving you a reference
manual to use as you carry on later with your machine. As
a general rule, you will need to bring the following with you
each month to class:

year (9 classes) you'll
learn a variety of topics that will teach
the important, basic steps of Machine
Embroidery. Embroidery Club is FREE
for one year with embroidery machine
purchase; $250 if your machine was not
purchased from A Great Notion if space
is available. Pre-registration is required.
Please bring a 2” binder with you to
our first class as we will be completing
an embroidery workbook, giving you a
reference manual to use as you go on to
embroider more on your own. You'll need
to bring the following with you each month
to class:
• Machine with all accessories and hoops
• Embroidery Thread • Bobbin Thread
Any additional supplies required will be
emailed to you prior to each class.

1. Classes fill quickly! Please register early
to avoid disappointment.
2. Payment is due upon registration and
may be made by phone or e-mail for Visa or
Mastercard; or in person at either store. 5%
GST applies to all class prices.
3. REFUNDS & CANCELLATION: Classes
cancelled due to insufficient registration
will be given a full refund. If you need
to cancel a class, one week’s notice
is necessary for a refund EXCEPT for
travelling guest instructors for which
we require 30 days notice. After the 30
days, no refunds can be given however
you may send someone in your place. No
Refunds are issued for no-shows or if you
notify us less than one week for standard
classes or 30 days for travelling guest
instructors before class start date.
4. Fees cover instruction only. Students
are responsible for purchasing supplies
and we ask that they’re purchased from A
Great Notion. We offer a discount on class
supplies: 15% off notions and 10% discount
on fabrics purchased in-store.
5. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early for your
class to allow time for set-up. For evening
classes doors will open 15 minutes before
the class start time.
6. Sewing machines are available for your
use in our classroom on a first-come, firstserve basis. If required, please book it with
your class to ensure availability.
7. Attendance is limited to those who
have paid for the class. Children are not
permitted to attend classes.
8. Every effort is made to schedule class
time so that all students complete their
projects, note that some students may
finish early while others don’t finish as
anticipated.
9. Please bring basic sewing supplies and
your machine in good working order to
all hands-on classes. You are welcome to
bring a lunch to any class.
10. Please refrain from wearing perfumes as
some attendees are highly sensitive.

Learning to sew can be fun too! In
this class we will be learning
how to sew basic stitches and
seams to create a fun and unique

Is fitting your nemesis? Bring your favourite patterns
and muslins and let’s start fitting! Go home with your
patterns altered just for you. You’ll size your pattern,
identify your fitting problems, adjust the pattern, cut
out the garment from scrap fabric or muslin, sew the
fitting shell and then refine the fit! Finally, transfer
your alterations to your pattern. Bring patterns for
jackets, pants, tops, jeans, outerwear … whatever
you want and whatever fabric you want to make
them in … woven, stretch wovens or knits. Three
