DIRECTOR OF SPORT REPORT
Final Round of AIC Chess, Rugby and Football
This weekend is the final round of AIC chess, rugby and football. The season seems to have flown by with it
not seeming too long ago that we were in trials for these sports. It is great to see that as a College we are in
contention for top 3 finishes in all three aggregate competitions and individual teams are in the hunt for
premierships.
Next week in the sports letter we will thank everyone involved in putting this massive season together and
ensuring our boys have the opportunity to play these three sports. However, I would encourage every boy
and their families to take the time this weekend, where possible, to personally thank their team coach for
the season. There have been incidences over the last few weeks that have highlighted to everyone in our
community how lucky SLC is to have the great number of staff and wonderful old boys involved in our
program. This is complemented by some parents. While I acknowledge some parents may disagree with
some selections throughout the season and game plans and strategies can be debated on the sideline, the
simple gesture of shaking your coaches hand and acknowledging their time, effort and commitment to your
son would be greatly appreciated.
Round 6 Review
Last weekend lived up to the expectations of a challenging weekend for all of our sporting teams. It was
great to see the chess results from Friday night with SLC winning the majority of chess fixtures, something
that ‘on paper’ you would not have expected. The First IV defeated the previously undefeated Padua First IV
team which was an impressive effort. On Saturday, there were some great rugby and football games played
with the majority of aggregate fixtures going in SLC’s favour. Unfortunately, our First XV were defeated after
being up in the game until half time. Our First XI recorded a very good 3-0 win. It was impressive to see,
particularly in the middle school grades, the number of teams that won close games.
Round 7 Preview
This weekend we play Iona College in our final round. This will be a difficult weekend for all teams in rugby,
chess and football. Iona’s rugby program is very strong with a number of teams contending with SLC teams
for premierships. Some of this weekend’s rugby games are virtual grand finals and the standard of rugby on
display will be very high. Iona is also one of the schools that are contending to win the aggregate football
championship and their First XI is undefeated and have already been crowned premiers for 2017. It will be a
great opportunity for the First XI to challenge themselves against AIC’s best and if our boys play to their
ability, it will be a wonderful game.
To all the senior boys who play their last game of chess, rugby and football for the school this weekend, on
behalf of all in the College I wish you well. I hope you have enjoyed playing school ‘footy’ and chess and you
look back on the memories with great fondness. Thank-you to all the parents who with their son graduating
Year 12 will be completing their direct involvement with school rugby, football and chess. Thank-you for
your support of your son and the College’s sporting efforts.
Good luck to every boy in their fixtures this weekend.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING REPORT
Felix Leung is the school’s 1st XV and 1st XI physio. Each Saturday he helps with
strapping boys before games and maintaining injury concerns during and after
game recovery. On Mondays he is in early assessing boys with triage sessions
and recommends ‘return to sport’ protocols for those injured. Afterwards, he
writes up a report and sends this out to all coaches so they know what each
player is up to for the week. This term he has been busy in managing players,
especially for rugby. It’s a credit to Felix’s tireless effort that we are able to
have a full strength forward pack in this last round against Iona this weekend.
Below I’ve included a report written by Felix for this week’s Sports Report.
Felix Leung Report:
When it comes to strength and conditioning and managing high performance
athletes it’s easy to forget the simple things. They might spend 1-2 hours in the gym each day and then
complete a 2-hour training session. But during the rest of the day, what you do may be just as
important. The students spend an average of 6 hours at school sitting at their desk or computers, and when
they're at home, they are often on computers and phones. So how many students and athletes are aware of
their posture during every day sitting tasks. This year in the First XV squad, we have had a number of injuries
that have been influenced by poor posture or prolonged sitting. The strain and load that is put through your
neck, shoulders and lower back when sitting in poor postures or prolonged sitting has been linked to many
musculoskeletal injuries, whether its neck pain or low back pain. Here are a few tips on how to set up your
desk and workstations to reduce the strain on the body and reduce our chance of aches and pains
(Australian Physiotherapy Association).

CHESS REPORT
Round 6 against Padua college was the most successful week yet for Lauries chess players. Lauries took
home an overall win of the fixture with four out of the five teams winning in their divisions. Congratulations
to all players on this very convincing win!
This week sees the last fixture of the season played at Iona college. There are a few teams that are in a very
strong position in the lead up to this round to be able to take home some valuable points towards their
standings in the overall competition. Particularly, the senior B team who are currently in the top 3 teams in
their division. Good luck to the senior B team especially this week (Year 12 players Jordan Foss, Gerado
Corta, Braydn Croft, Zach Simmonis and Flynn Simmonis).
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all players on their hard work and dedication over the season. Their
willingness to learn new skills at training and work together to improve each other’s game tactics has been a
real strength displayed throughout the season. We look forward to seeing what the current intermediate
players can achieve this week as they have all improved vastly since the beginning of the season.
I’d also like to extend a good luck to all the Y12 players who will be participating in their final chess fixture
for Lauries this week. Some of these students have been involved with Lauries chess since they were quite
young, while others have challenged themselves to join for the first time this year. We wish the following
year 12 players well for a successful final game!
- Kevin Nguyen (Captain, 2017)
- Bryan Tong
- Matthew Burton
- Maximillian Wakka
- Khoi Vuong
- Ryan Loh
- Gerardo Corta

FOOTBALL REPORT
Round 6 saw our senior teams travel to Banyo, whilst our junior teams hosted Padua at Runcorn on a
glorious day for football. Both sets of pitches were in great order for this time of the year, which ensured
great games were had at both venues. SLC finished the day with 8 aggregate victories, 3 losses and 1 draw.
Our 8A’s had another fine performance beating an undefeated Padua side, whilst our 8B’s were left
heartbroken, conceding in the dying minutes to end their premiership quest. There were mixed results in
both the 9 and 10 age groups, where SLC’s profligacy in front of goal ultimately being our Achilles heel. Our
2nd XI ground out a hard fought win – keeping their premiership hopes alive leading into the final week,
whilst our 1st XI secured a comfortable victory over Padua.
Special mention must go to 1st XI reserve goal keeper Simon Fynes-Clinton, who, after playing in a winning
2nd XI side, was called into action after 1st XI stalwart Ryan Govan was injured in the warm up. Simon
ensured the 1st XI kept a clean sheet with a subline save in the 1st half that was only upstaged by a
sensational penalty save in the dying minutes of the game.
Our final fixture of the year sees us travel to Iona for what should be another hard fought day across all age
groups. I’d ask all players and parents to ensure that they thank their coaches for all their hard work this
season. For many of our coaches, working with an SLC team means they miss out on watching their own
children play on the weekend, not to mention the time commitment during what is a busy teaching term. I
wish all SLC teams the best of luck this weekend.

RUGBY REPORT
Rd 6 Aggregate vs Padua
Round 6 against Padua saw Lauries finish the aggregate on top, 8 games to 5. The 1st XV is the flagship game
of every school’s rugby program and it’s unfortunate we went down in this result, however once again our
younger Age Groups performed as they have all season, and represent the strength of Lauries rugby coming
through. If you’re able to get out this weekend against Iona, matches of the round will be the 7Bs and 9As.
Currently the 7Bs are level on top of the table with Iona and the winner of this weekend will secure the
premiership. The 9As are in a 4-way premiership tussle and if Ashgrove can end Villanova’s chances of an
outright ‘3peat’ premiership, these boys have the chance to go one step further than 2 years ago. Other
premiership contentions this weekend include the 7B’s, 8As, 9As and 10As. Good luck to all teams in your
last round of Lauries rugby for 2017!
1st XV vs Padua
The boys played a very clinical Padua side on the weekend. Each week one of our team’s strength has been
their counter-ruck at the breakdown, and on the weekend Callum Lauder initiated a turnover that was spun
wide and saw Zac Steer outpace Padua’s right winger to open the scoring. From there Padua regained field
position and hit back quickly with a try and penalty to make the scoreline 10-7. Our boys had opportunities
to add points before halftime but unfortunately did not find a way through their defence on the line. Padua
played to their strengths during the second half, putting on 3 early tries through 2 driving mauls and a good
support line on the inside from their centre with a ‘second touch’ to score under the posts. An Angus Dean
try over the ruck saw Lauries hit back but a little too late with their 9, scooting and scoring on full-time from
a fortuitous ball out the back of scrum. Full-time 36-14. When reviewing the tape, Lauries had 5
opportunities in Padua’s 22m where they didn’t come away with points. Padua on the other hand converted
each time. Shoulder-less tackles early in the second half stifled our line defensively and an inability to
contain their driving maul hurt the score. Padua defended our pods well loading up the middle of the field
with their bigger bodies and we looked promising when picking and driving down their 15m channels but
didn’t find points when we needed to swing momentum back around. Strong performance in first half but
let the second half get away. Best of luck to our Senior boys playing their last game of rugby for Lauries this
weekend. Enjoy playing with your mates.
Representative Duties
Congratulations to Angus Dean, David Van Zeeland, Billy Rutherford and Zac Steer who were selected in the
AIC representative team, Adam Walter who was selected in the Chairman’s team and Lincoln Clapham and
Callum Lauder as shadow players. These boys will play in the upcoming Queensland Schoolboys Competition
at the end of the month.
Brad Free’s Rugby Academy
Brad Free Ballymore Clinic is for aspiring 1st XV players at Lauries. It is for under 13-17 players who played
A’s rugby this season. The first clinic begins this Sunday 11 th June (see flyer below for more details). It is
position specific skills free of charge that help develop the individual player within the Lauries Rugby
program. There will be 8 professional ex-players and coaches (including Brendan Cannon) out there this
weekend.
Spirit of Rugby Night this Saturday (10th June) at Runcorn 6pm
Thank you to the parents who have already emailed an ‘expression of interest’ for the Spirit of Rugby night
being held this Saturday from 6pm. So far we have 70 people attending the evening. The dress code is smart
casual. This is sure to be a fun night to end the season after our final round game against Iona. See you
there.
Playing Rugby Post School
The opportunities to progress with rugby after school never cease to amaze me. Last Friday I received an
email from Brown University (one of 8 Ivy League schools in America) detailing their rugby program and
potential player recruits. I’ve included an excerpt from the coach below for those interested.
I am a rugby coach presently going into my 22nd year at a prestigious university here in the United
States. This time of year, I try and identify potential candidates for my next recruitment class. I
have decided to step up my recruitment efforts and connect with schools throughout the world in the hops
of identifying that one or two players that may fit what we are looking for here at Brown University.
Because to the nature of rugby in America, the percentage of players that come in to our program with prior
rugby experience is limited. To grow the program, I need to increase this percentage. I began a push to
increase the percentages last year. This year saw the results of my first foray into my recruitment. We went
from about 17% with a prior rugby background to about 28%. The team finished second in our league and
qualified for the USA National play-offs losing in the final round of 8 (D1AA division). Next year, we look to
be at about the 34% mark so hopefully we can continue in this upward direction.
Although you may think it’s strange I’ve included this except in the Sports Report, I want boys leaving school
to be aware of rugby opportunities outside of Australian Rugby. Currently I know of a number of Queensland
Premier Rugby boys paid enough money to travel around Europe and play rugby across different
competitions. Not a bad way to travel and experience life when you’re young.
Cam Foley and Breakdown Laws
Thanks to Lauire’s Old Boy Cam Foley for coming out yesterday and
assisting Year 8A and B teams with ‘breakdown’ law
interpretations. Cam currently coaches at Queensland Premier
Grade and aims is to go on with his refereeing at Super Rugby and
International Level.
Importance of Warmup in Rugby
A study has found a specific 20-minute exercise program can
reduce injuries in teenage rugby players by more than 70%. Experts
from the University of Bath say they are excited by the dramatic
findings, which are to set to be implemented across all levels of the
community game by the Rugby Football Union before next season.
According to the benchmark study, published in the British Journal
of Sports Medicine, researchers found overall injuries fell by 72%
when players completed the newly devised exercise session at
least three times a week, either just before a match or before
training. Concussion injuries were also reduced by 59% in a survey
that involved monitoring 40 schools nationwide and nearly 2,500 players aged 14 –18.
The training program was developed by the research team as part of the study. It focuses on balance,
strength and agility in order to better prepare players for the physical challenges of the game and to
mitigate injury risks. Split into four stages it takes roughly 20 minutes to complete. This comprises a running
warm-up with change of direction activities (two minutes), lower-limb balance training (four minutes),
targeted resistance exercises (eight minutes) plus jumping, side-stepping and landing exercises (six minutes).

CROSS COUNTRY REPORT
Thank you to all boys who have been coming along to Cross Country so far this season. We’re averaging 4050 boys each session which is a great effort during Rugby and Football seasons. Just a reminder, training will
be as usual next week during the final week of school. During school holidays training will then switch to
7.30am each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. First week of holidays is a busy week with our
annual holiday run against St Pats (26th June) followed by breakfast and game of touch. The Pat’s boys are
reigning 1-0 champs through a late intercept last year, so we’ll need all numbers on deck to ensure we turn
the tide on this result. The Friday of that week (30th June) will be our morning trip down the coast that will
see us run around Burleigh lookout before having a surf and barbeque breakfast. Keep an eye out for more
details in regards to holiday training in next week’s report.
PB Friday
Congratulations to the 25 boys that recorded PBs last Friday and earnt a ham and cheese toastie. It’s the
cold mornings like today that make it that little be more rewarding. It will be interesting to see whether boys
can battle the law of ‘diminshing returns’ and keep posting weekly PBs. Keep at it boys.
Good luck Luke Willian
Good luck to Lauries Old Boy and Cross Country runner Luke Willian who is currently pushing for selection in
Triathlon for the Commonwealth Games being held on the Gold Coast next year. Luke was yesterday named
as one of five Australian athletes to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games selection race upcoming in
Hamburg next month.
