Healing Insecure Attachment to Build More Fulfilling Relationships
Therapy rooms are filled with clients who are not resilient, which can be a core issue in depression, anxiety, PTSD, personality
disorders, and relationship issues. They often perceive others as not emotionally available to them; and so they relate in a guarded
or hostile manner. These issues interfere with their ability to regulate their emotions, and they negatively impact all aspects of their
lives. In their vigilance to protect themselves from potential harm, they block even positive outside influence. This causes them to
resistant even therapists’ efforts to help them.
The key to working effectively with these clients is to help them feel enough trust to be willing to lower their defenses. They can
then take the risk of opening up to their own experience and to outside influence. Attachment theory offers a way to understand
their struggles and a framework for helping them feel safer. Key interventions include increasing awareness and mentalization
(an attachment-theory-based concept). Special attention is paid to helping with emotional regulation. When combined with
perspectives and interventions offered by emerging research in compassion and compassion-based treatments, the resulting
attachment-based compassion therapy approach is highly effective.
