player achievements

JANUARY
Dear players and parents,
Happy New Year everybody, it's great to be back with you all - and to
see our players and parents again at the start of what promises to be
an exciting 2017.
The Christmas/holiday period was a very busy one at both ACE
locations - as ACE Burlington hosted the annual Super Series junior and
$9,000 Open events, while Toronto Tennis City was busy with junior
camps. Also in December - ACE celebrated its forty years of operation with a 40th
anniversary party (see below) at the /Cedar Springs Club in Burlington.
TORONTO
BURLINGTON
Although we are only a month into this session - much activity has taken place. Our
competitive players have their hands full - as National Selection tournaments are in full swing
for the various age groups (see highlights below), while many players are simultaneously
navigating through school exams.
It's wonderful to see that the participation in our new progressive programs for this session is
once again "through the roof ". Meanwhile it seems like players and parents alike love the
new ACE jackets (see below) which our competitive players have received for 2017.
Finally, we are happy to announce that ACE and Cedar
Springs, under the direction of Ivan Bradaric, have agreed to
a long term contract which ensures the continuity of one of
Canada's top development programs in one of Canada's
top clubs.

Jamaican Initiatives
Making a difference in two worlds
Doug Burke and Pierre
Lamarche
When I reached out to my old friend Douglas Burke who was
living in Kingston, Jamaica to move back to Canada and assume
leadership of the Ace Tennis operations, it was with the
understanding that his contribution to Jamaican tennis and it's
youth would be on-going.
Now six years later and having assumed the direction of Ace
Tennis, Douglas who has half his family in Toronto and half in Kingston is still heavily involved
in insuring that his commitment to his home land makes a difference for young Jamaican
tennis players.
Over the last few years Doug developed the curriculum for the training and development of
physical education teachers in the primary and
secondary institutions in the delivery of tennis
programs
throughout
Jamaica.
The
annual Douglas Burke Invitational Doubles
Tennis Series culminates during Christmas
every year and provides exposure for
competitive junior players of all ages.
Burke also uses his position at Ace to provide
educational and tennis opportunities in Canada
to
talented
Jamaican
youngsters. He
fondly remembers his own opportunity when his
Doug Burke at the prize giving, handing out ACE
family came to Canada where he won the U18
shirts
Canadian National junior title, before attending
Southern Illinois University, on his way to the ATP tour, and becoming the godfather of
Jamaican tennis.
Two former Ace players, Jamaicans Simon Levy and Maiz Sinclair, followed Doug to
Burlington and are now at Ferris State University in Michigan. This Christmas, a new
prospective college player, Daniel Newman has made the commitment to leave his family in
Montego Bay. This past week 14 year old Michaela Stephens, [see below] one of Jamaica's
future hope, arrived in Burlington [in a t-shirt] for a two month training stint.
Looking after the Jamaican kids in Canada, taking care of Ace players on an on-going basis,
insuring the well being of his mother and father in Toronto, supporting his former Davis Cup
player son, Brandon in 2nd year law school at Osgoode at York and coordinating his
Jamaican family [including three grand children] on a daily basis with his superstar wife Anne
Marie are just part of Doug's everyday responsibilities.
So when you see Doug at tournaments, at the club, take the time to talk to him and see what
a true Winner is.
"Respect, Peace, Love"
Pierre Lamarche
Jamaica's number one female junior player
Michaela Stephens will be attending renowned
Ace Tennis Academy in Canada on a threemonth scholarship as part of her
development. She is expected to leave the
island on Monday, January 23, to begin her
stint. The scholarship was made possible by
her former national coach Douglas Burke, who
is currently the president and tennis director of
Ace Tennis Academy in Burlington, Canada.
He was Jamaica's national coach for over ten
years. Stephens said she hopes to make the
best of the opportunity.

COACH'S CORNER
Brandon Alguire
Head Coach Provincial Program
ACE Burlington
At ACE Tennis we emphasize the importance of planning. Each and every
program has an annual plan which outlines the tactical, technical, and mental
skills required for that program's age and level of play. These plans are
progressive in the sense that the skills the players acquire are a prerequisite
to the next program and the following programs after that.
The following article addresses the importance of players using their time properly on the court
and understanding what they should be working on EVERY day! If any of our players don't
know for sure what they should be working on, they should consult the annual plan and the
ACE Tennis Mantra. Both documents they should have received at the start of the year from
the head coach of their program.
Productive Time on the Tennis Court
If you are trying to become the best tennis player you can, you need to go about this process
in a disciplined and organized manner. Each and every time you step on the tennis court, it is
another opportunity to become a better tennis player mentally, emotionally, tactically, and
physically. All too often the athlete goes to a practice session with no clear understanding of
what they are trying to accomplish.
This results in precious time being lost due to not having a clear cut plan of how that
individual is going to become the best tennis player possible. This is the responsibility of the
instructor and the student to map out a process of how they are going to attack their
development in an efficient and disciplined manner.
Coming to the courts and just hitting balls with four or five kids on a court, while a couple of
the kids are staring into the clouds, is NOT going to get the job done if you are trying to
become an accomplished and superior tennis player. All students need to be engaged and
learning at all times. Many parents and students are told that if their child plays more hours of
tennis, they will become better tennis players. That is just not the case. More quality high
disciplined hours will equal to significantly more improvements.
If you are signed up to train 4 to 5 hours a day and you are just hitting a bunch of balls with no
purpose and taking long water breaks, do not expect to achieve your goals and dreams. At
this point, having the athlete train properly for an hour or hour and a half is far more beneficial
than spending 4 to 5 hours on the court if the training is done properly, efficiently and
responsibly.
