Coach Tim Swartzendruber recently
completed his ninth season as the
head men’s basketball coach at
McPherson College. McPherson
College has enjoyed tremendous
success under Coach Swartzendruber, having qualified for four NAIA
Division II National Tournaments during his tenure. McPherson College
has also won two KCAC tournament
championships under Coach Swartzendruber (only two in school history)
and one regular season title.
The past nine years have produced
some tremendous individual accomplishments as well. During the 2013-14 season Samson
Shivers broke the all-time scoring record at McPherson College
amassing 2,075 points during his four years. Another impressive
record to fall during 2013-14 was the single-season rebounding
average mark which Devirous Johnson tied with 12.1 per game.
Seven Bulldogs have been named First Team All-KCAC, three
have been All-Americans, and one was the KCAC Player of the
Year. Additionally, six Bulldogs have received the prestigious
NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award for their accomplishments in the
classroom and on the basketball court.
In his nine years at McPherson College, Coach Swartzendruber
has amassed a record of 149-135. His overall college record
stands at 219-191, which includes four years at Hesston College. At Hesston, Coach Swartzendruber recorded two 20-win
seasons – only the second and third time in school history the
team had won at least 20 games – and took the Larks to two
consecutive Region VI title games. In his final year, the Larks
were ranked in the top 15 of NJCAA Division II, finishing the
year 23-9.
Prior to his college coaching experience, Coach Swartzendruber spent 22 years as a high school coach at Newton, Wellington, and Kingman High Schools. In 2004, Swartzendruber was
named the Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year and
was also recognized by the National Federation of State High
Schools as the Midwest Section Coach of the Year.
“My goal for our camp is that each camper has a positive camp
experience,” remarked Coach Swartzendruber. “I have always
loved teaching the game of basketball and we incorporate
fun throughout the week as well. I have worked many camps
throughout my career and I use those experiences to make for a
great week of basketball.”
