w i t h k e nT y o u n g s t r o m challenge no. 1 set the mood …today’s mood-setting musings come from publicity expert (and guilty pleasure indulger) melissa cassera… set the mood. it’s been scientifically proven that the space you are sitting in - right now - is directly influencing your mood. that chair that you hate is spiking your stress levels and making it harder for you to focus and finish writing your &*(%#@ blog post. shift into the next room. ahh. so much better. now that painting you love is producing happy-making neurotransmitters that unlock your creativity and allow you to express yourself with ease. for better or worse, our surroundings directly impact our bodies, our brains — and our quality of work. but we don’t need scientists in white lab coats to explain this. um... hello? WE KNOW. when it comes to getting work done? setting is everything. there’s nothing better than having a workspace that turns you on and makes you feel like a sexy, prolific powerhouse. if your current office or workspace makes you feel like a sad panda, there are plenty of ways you can make your atmosphere more arousing. why not start with... mood music listening to spine-tingling tracks will make you want to create something worthy of that tune. my faves? Arsonist’s Lullaby by Hozier, Breathe Me by Sia, and the Crazy in Love Remix from the fifty shades of grey soundtrack (obviously). w/kent youngstrom thrilling reads fill your workspace with inspiring books and magazines that delight you. paw through the pages when you need a mood-boost or a spark of creativity! some of my favs: + darling magazine + sweet paul magazine + 50 ways to say you’re awesome + kate spade: things we love + forest feast + the inspired home: nests of creatives erotic fiction of any kind! (smut will make you a wayyyy better writer) scintillating scents fill your workspace with scents that stir your senses. some of my favs: + cinnamon. spicy and delicious... and it improves your attention span, too! + lavender. so soothing. take a deep inhalation before answering a frustrating email. serenity now! + citrus. invigorating and terrific for stirring up new ideas. try putting a wedge of lemon or a few drops of orange oil into your water bottle. snazzy! + peppermint. it promotes laser sharp focus and feels like a zingy “wake up” call for your mind. candles, incense, essential oils, lotions, or herbal teas... treat yourself to the best! dress the part full disclosure: i am completely THAT girl who wears yoga pants and throws my hair into a messy ponytail while working... most of the time. #basichowever, i’ve noticed that when i put a little more intention into my wardrobe it’s like an aphrodisiac for my creativity. even just slipping into a cute skirt or tossing on a colorful scarf can make a huge difference! this doesn’t mean you have to spend hours getting primped or slap on a pair of drag queen-inspired false eyelashes just to sit behind your computer screen at home... alone. maybe a three-minute make up routine is more your speed. or perk up your filthy hair with some cheerful dry shampoo and call it good. ha.you might consider investing in a luxurious pair of satin lounge pants instead of wearing your typical sweats. or drape yourself in a pashmina scarf or a delicious heated neck pillow if your shoulders feel chilly and tight from too many hours hunched over your computer. on more daring days try a silk kimono or some lacy underthings. just don’t forget to put on a shirt before your video-conference call with a client! pants are optional, but recommended. definitely be mindful of that camera angle or they may receive more, um, “value” than they paid for! ;) get playful when do you feel most creative? when you are panicking and stressed out? c hoke-holding your laptop and trying to pound your ideas into the keys? or... when you feel happy, relaxed, un-pressured and playful? thought so. ;) incorporating “playfulness” into your workspace and workday does not make you “unprofessional.” quite the opposite: it makes you incredibly productive! here are a few ways to bring more play to your work: +pimp your laptop keys + get a pen that gives you a compliment + up your mug game + change siri’s accent on your iPhone + geek out on gadgets (usb drink warmer? jake gyllenhaal does not mind if you watch his sexy new movie trailer five or twelve or twenty-eight more times. my mood is lifting jussssst thinking about it. excuse me. youtube is calling. -melissa challenge no. 2 color hilight and trim , …today’s brightly hued words come from yours truly with a fresh cut of poetry from brave writer alexandra franzen, who believes that we get one beautiful shot at life, it’s a privilege to be here, and it’s never too late to make it count. today is not over yet. color + highlights + a trim it’s time to get yo’ hairs did. color me bad. - all for love of course the clutter is gone. the desk is clear. or rather - you have set the stage and cleared space for the pretty little note left by your boo with a time and place for tonight’s surprise dinner on the town. you’ve been sent to get your hair blown out with some crisp benjamin’s + instructions to exchange them for the perfect little black dress and some slightly inappropriately heels of your choosing… wait, wrong challenge group. actually, the concept is much the same. your work station deserves the same fantasy treatment as you would devote to a dream date with the one you love. oh work space, i think I love ya. i’m always thinkin’ of ya. i want ya to know i do all 4 love.i love it when we’re 2-gether. clear space, i need you 4-ever. i want u 2 know i do it all 4 love. it is time to put some alluring details into the space you occupy more than any other throughout the day. and while just about everyone can turn heads in the right little black dress, your creative space may need a little bit more color. color scientifically brilliant types have demonstrated that the primary colors of red, blue, yellow, and green all stimulate us in different ways. red + the body. blue + the mind. yellow + emotions, ego, self-confidence. green + balance between mind, body, and emotions. combine these colors and you can combine their stimuli. try grey tones with slight hints of the color you need to work effectively. (this is my personal favorite way to choose a color) if you’re a creative, yellow will work much better than blue, because it stimulates your ego and spirits, and makes you more optimistic. if you want to be more productive doing something physical, red rocks your world. quiet thinkers + writers give blue a go. meditation + yoga rooms - green is gold. you may be saying…“but there are so many kinds of yellow. i can’t decide!” i know. i chose color on a daily basis and sometimes even i can be overwhelmed. it can be a bit like the sunday after church grocery run. we usually need a gallon of milk and maybe a few items for lunch. j ust about every week we end up spending an extra twenty minutes roaming the pastry + deli counter, cereal aisle, and who knows what else. $120 later we are back in the car deciding which of two varieties of deli meat we are going to combine with the three bread choices will make the best pressed sandwich. that can easily happen at the paint display. focus daniel-son. + one. take a deep breath. choose a color you like. + lets stay neutral and say gray. + two. ignore the rainbow of colors and head to the gray. + choose a tint you like - lets say yellow. + three. find the card with grey’s that seem a bit yellow. + grab that card from the display and walk away. + four. choose one of those and proceed to the counter. + purchase a sample. + five. flirt with the paint attendant to reduce even further the mistake paint for your art supply stash. (sorry, keep adding details from the wrong group.) “what defines whether a color is stimulating or soothing is not the color, it’s the intensity. a strong bright color will stimulate, and a color with low saturation will soothe.” - angela wright, the beginner’s guide to colour psychology be you keep in mind that this is your room. you have to be turned on to walk into it every day. go with what feels right. then do it. it’s just paint. want to diy this project? here are some helpful hints. or pick up a copy of hgtv’s may issue which is full of tips. hi - light a room is like a stage, if you see it without lighting, it can be the coldest place in the world.” - paul lynde. back to that fantasy date night you may or may not have expanded on while reading about color. i’m going to wildly guess that at some point in your escape from reality there is some mood lighting. it’s just not the same fantasy with a fluorescent flicker is it? one overall source of light is not enough to accommodate the varied activities of a home office space - it’s best to layer light sources. use simple + pretty task lamps to illuminate focused work. place task lights to avoid glare and shadows. natural daylight rules. (just make sure to have a way to contain it’s power with blinds or drapes.) being able to adjust light levels throughout the day is ideal for the eyes + promotes productivity. trim. eventually as the fantasy moves on… less is more. visual clutter. it happens. but it doesn’t have to. you are in control young jedi. the less you see the less you will be distracted. duh! “simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.” - john maeda double duh, obviously, right? so what can you subtract? is your desk top a house fire’s wet dream? it’s time to attack that *^%@. take it down. have chairs that no one sits in? donate or re-use elsewhere. perhaps there is an old cabinet with nothing but a a few loose screws inside taking up space. or bookshelves with a complete set of encyclopedia britanica? those are what a fire is for. last weeks’ banana peel? business cards from the trade show at your last job? this is not your fathers desk. you probably don’t need an ash tray, letter opener, white out, paper clip holder, tape dispenser, pencil sharpener, pencil holder, or the unsolved rubik’s cube that has been sitting there since 87’. rather than me sending you to your room and not letting you down for dinner until it is clean, here is some practical advice. piles do not constitute as organization. put things away now. it will save time later. have a system. make it yours, but don’t be a piler’. clean your desk at least once a day. throw it away hoarder! you don’t need it any more. if you think you do try to go paperless - e-bills, scan systems, evernote - anything other than piling on. use drawers. open shelving can be great and even assist in creating a beautiful gallery wall, but it is also a danger zone for collections of unnecessary books, dusty photos, stacks of papers and such. consider a desk with drawers or a rolling cabinet to store items that would normally make their way to your desktop. use a cable management system. hanging cables are worse than having to stare at john trevolta while listening to idina menzel. i just want to concentrate on the beautiful thing but all i can stare at is the messy part. cables - do not just let them go. less rolls out like love rhymes with yes ends with a sigh like there’s nothing to do except let it all ride ride out that ssssssss till you’ve emptied your lungs emptied your mind hollow like a bottle filled with sunlight or starlight your choice just don’t settle for anything lessthan the best capture the best let go of the rest do you need that? not in the slightest not unless it rhymes with yes, bless, caress let it be simple let it be pure let it be love let it be less - alexandra franzen today’s challenge. or challenges. choose one or for extra credit - do both. de-clutter your space. literally. throw away all your mismatched and non-working pens. clean that fire starter’s kit of paperwork off your desk. use file folders or your own system and put them in drawers. dust.keep only essentials on your desk top. can you keep that to five items?attack the space. load up on carbs and hit it hard. use one of melissa’s playlist to get the juice flowingplace the largest trash can you have in the door way and practice your three point range. put on a cape.or… get your color goggles on. pick out a new color for your office. you certainly don’t need to get out the paint supplies and start rolling this moment.pinterest is a great source for color pallete’s. or visit the sherwin williams color page. or if you are out and about grab some swatches from your local paint store. for today’s challenge, share a pic of your decluttered space or share the new color you plan to paint your office (or do both!) – and post it over in our private facebook lair for the chance to win a framed kenT youngstrom / alexandra franzen art print. for extra credit, you can also post it on instagram or pinterest with the #setyospace hashtag. i won’t rest until I’ve provided feedback & encouragement to absolutely everyone. promise. challenge no. 3 dominate it …today’s dominating performance is assisted by home goods retailer, lulu and georgia founder sara sugarman… dominate cindy crawford’s mole. megan fox’s weird thumbs. harrison’s ford’s scar. all things that perhaps these celebrities are know for, but not necessarily what you would be staring at if you met them in person. aaaand megan - side note, thumbs aren’t really that important to me. and why aren’t i staring at her thumbs? because she has other, more attractive features like fantastic eye brows and high cheek bones that take my eyes away from even noticing. they are not the focal point of her overall look. they don’t dominate. when you first meet someone. or walk into a new room. or view a new work of art, where do your eyes travel to first? what is the first thing you see? what grabs and holds your attention? whatever it is that grabs and holds your attention like a southern momma, bear hugging her grade schooler after a week away at summer camp is the focal point. in any composition, a focal point is that specific part of an area of emphasis to which the artist draws the eye. and it is true that a focal point is often spoken of when referring to art work. so why would we not use it when we are attempting to create and artistic environment to spur our creativity. what would grab my attention if i walked into your work space? focal point a focal point is achieved by using dominance. i’m not talking christian grey dominance here. it’s a dominance that creates a visual lead in and guides the viewer to other parts of a space. every design should have a gripping area of dominance that serves as a ticket to explore its surroundings. so how do i achieve this dominance? (without wearing a leather cat suit) +contrast. think sesame street signs - which of these things is not like the other. (this must be read in a sing songy tone.) +size. size matte… never mind, that’s way over used. and under used actually. try something larger than you think necessary for your wall. or go the opposite. less can be more - remember! +color. love things simple and white? throw some color just one place. or obsessed with color everywhere? black and white can grab your eye like a sale tag on a pair of jimmy choo’s. +density. maybe your favorite store is costco? you like things in bulk. i can be guilty of that in my studio. clumping images together is a great way to direct the eye. it works well for gray marlin in his photography) +value. not value as in an original kenT youngstrom vs. a giclee kenT youngstrom print value. rather, a value that refers to the intensity of an object. how much “heat” is that thing putting off. a hot pink scarf may draw attention more than a subdued one. +white (empty) space. i hope you are not among clutter right now. but if you are - look around. do your eyes have a place to rest? are your eyes desperately darting back and forth looking for a place to land? white space on your wall, on your shelf and on your desk give your iris’s a place to rest. they need nap time too. if all else fails, just go with the leather cat suit. the ears have it off to a big presentation and wearing your hair up? i would guess that you have spent a good deal of time thinking about which ear rings to have dangling. large hoops or colorful shimmering bling will grab the attention. simple, understated studs may make whoever you are presenting to look elsewhere. in contrast, if the hair is down and blown out, my guess is you spent more time on a great neck piece than on the ear accessories. make sense? how the experts put it sara silverman, founder and all together rockstar of lulu + georgia says it this way. we know how it is. you’re sitting at your desk day dreaming about a trip to the tropics. meanwhile your laptop is staring back at you blankly. but what if you didn’t have to dream about an inspiring place? what if you were in it already? while we can’t magically transport you to a tropical paradise, you can make your workspace your own personal oasis by adding color, style and texture. what if your rug was soft and plush; a welcome treat for your bare feet? shoes not required for creativity. (shirt is your personal preference.) in addition to your rug, put your feet up on a pretty little pouf, which also serves as a bright pop of color. tie it all together with a subtle, beachy lamp to set the scene and eliminate the harsh glare of an obnoxious overhead light. by incorporating décor elements that reflect your own personal style, you’ll find that you’ll no longer need to daydream of far off places in search of inspiration. you’ll find it right in your own surroundings. photogapher gray marlin travels the world bringing inspired vision to life. he captures the spirit and adventure of travel and makes everyday a vacation. mimic his style by creating your own picture of a boutique get away. w hotels have made a name for themselves by creating one of a kind, high style, boutique environments for their guest. copy their style. whatever your style is. grab it. own it. splurge on yourself. you and your business deserve a magazine ready environment. spend money to make money. look good to feel good. i say… work in the best to produce the best. today’s challenge dominate your space. create a focal point. photograph your space with a new focal point. try hiding something in relatively plain site, but distract my eyes from it with an on point - focal point. share your fabulous focal point over in our private facebook lair for the chance to win a framed or canvas print from the new kenT youngstrom line exclusively from lulu and georgia. for extra credit, you can also post it on instagram or pinterest with the #setyospace hashtag. i won’t rest until I’ve provided feedback & encouragement to absolutely everyone. promise. challenge no. 4 line of sight ...today’s vision of brillance is sparked by award winning nashville interior designer julie couch line of sight today’s lesson is short and sweet. but powerful. use it not just in your work space but throughout your home. ever been in a room where something just seemed off? sort of like that weird feeling you get after that dream of being the only one in geometry class not wearing any clothes. chances are the art work in the room is not at the right height on the wall. there is an even greater chance that it is hung too high. if i were a painting or an inspiration board, how high should i be? high enough that i’m legal in denver? high enough that the middle of me meets the middle of you? (and no - i have never tried that as a pick up line.) the 57” rule. hang absolutely all of your art at 57” on center. why? think nicole kidman and keith urban hanging a their various awards and plaques in their new australian home. should their first fight really be over the fact that nicole’s eye height is higher than keith’s? the standard eye viewing height is 57” galleries and museums swear by this rule. it’s too high this most likely will be lower than you are use to hanging your pieces. yeah? change is good. it’s not too low. the art needs to bond with the other elements in your space and let them all work together in a more harmonious kumbayah kind of way. retailers do this perfectly. there is a reason you want to “live in that space”, each time you turn the page of their catalog. trust me, again, it is not too low. it will also develop a sense of downward dog style balance throughout the rest of your home if you create a constant line of sight. hanging recipe measure artwork and divide by 2 (this gives you the center) [ ex. 24”] measure top of your picture to the tightened wire or saw tooth hanger [ex. 4”] subtract “tight wire” amount from 1/2 height amount for the “to the hook” amount. (this will tell you how far above 57” your hook should go) [12” – 4” = 8”] add amount from above to 57” and mark on wall. nail goes here. [ 57” x 8” = 65” for nail/hook] but, i’m still a little confused here’s a tutorial video from apartment therapy. but, but, but, but i have several pieces i’d like to hang in a grouping like all the cool posts i see on instagram.cool. same rule applies. if you are hanging a grouping of work, establish the 57” for the middle images and work your way out from there. arranging the art on the floor first will help with this process. as a side note, keep the larger images in your grouping on the left. just because. seriously - hanging art is an art take it from nashville interior designer julie couch. find art that you love. more is more! make a statement with a floor-to-ceiling painting, or arrange a group of tiny treasures to create a gallery wall. good art will make your space personal which will, in turn, make it perfect. but i don’t have any art. i could give you a checklist of diy art projects, but this group is full of folks who can help you. or spend ten minutes on pinterest. but there was already a nail here. #nailtheredontcare meet me at the hanging tree… today’s challenge. bang + hang. re-hang your workspace art work using the rule above. not ready with the art work? - use some creativity to make a plan for new art. use painters tape to try out some wall layouts. share your “hang” over in our private facebook lair for the chance to win an original kenT youngstrom painting to hang at the appropriate height. for extra credit, you can also post it on instagram or pinterest with the #setyospace hashtag. i won’t rest until I’ve provided feedback & encouragement to absolutely everyone. promise. challenge no. 5 the complete picture the complete picture holy canoli your work space looks french fries with a milk shake good. are you stoked to get up in the morning and get some *&))$@ done? you should be. today’s lesson gets us ready to hear “that’s a wrap” + push you to perfection. resident styling expert kaitlin holland, founder of the school of styling, will be taking over and sharing a few tips and tricks for putting it all together to make your space magazine shoot ready. kaitlin is a believer, stylist, and creative business mentor who lives in north carolina with her husband and rescue pup, sophie mae. long conversations with friends new and old fill her soul and she is on a mission to extravagantly love and serve those who are put in her path. kaitlin created the school of styling to provide creative women, no matter their field or profession, with the education and inspiration they need to create beautiful work, events, and spaces. she is a cultivator of community, and the heartbeat of the workshop is found in the relationships built amongst attendees, speakers, and staff. with a background in art, she derives much of the inspiration for the workshop structure from a technical art setting. including demonstrations, hands on learning, and critique sessions with a like-minded group of women. take it away girl. hello! you’ve made it to day 5 - congratulations! it has been so fun to watch as you have taken all the tips and tricks to heart this week. i hope you’re ready to pull together your space today because it’s time to it’s crucial to think about your space in two ways… form + function. i love what william morris had to say about it: complete the picture! have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. i often style for editorial shoots + lesson number one i have learned is... that you can’t take your space (or yourself, for that matter) too seriously. as many a successful person have said in some way or another, take your work seriously, but never yourself. have fun with it! do you have a secret love affair with a bold patterns, loud colors, or extravagant fabrics but are hesitant to reveal that side of you? go for it.
