Introduction:
Project Partners:
In view of the deep concern of the National
Council for Women (NCW) for the conditions
of the neediest women, particularly those
heading households, NCW designed
and implemented the Women Heads of
Household Project. The aim is to examine
the conditions of this category of women,
identify their needs, offer them micro-credits
and raise their skills in order to help them
solve their economic problems and improve
their social conditions.
This project was implemented through
grants provided by:

he Arab Fund for Social and Economic
Development (AFESD).

arclays International Bank.

he Ministry of Awkafs (religious
endowments) in Egypt.
Information on women heads of
households:
•T
he percentage of households supported
by women in Egypt ranges between 1925% of the total number of households.
•A
ccording to the 2006 demographic
census, the number of households in
Egypt reached 17.2 million, therefore
the number of households supported
by women represents a third of the total
number of all Egyptian households.
• In 2012, the Prime Minister declared
that, according to a study prepared the
Council of Ministers in this respect, the
number of households supported by
women was 5 million.

stage in the governorates to be selected.
The woman head of household can be a
widow, a divorcee, the wife of a chronically or
incurably ill person, the wife of a partially or
totally disabled person, the wife of a prisoner,
an abandoned wife with children, and women
in similar conditions.

nhance the capabilities of the board
of directors of the NGOs selected for
implementing the project so that they can
be able to provide economic advice and
support to the recipients of the financial
support.
The criteria for selection of women
heads of households for the project:
Candidates for the project should:
•C
arry national identity number cards.
•B
e able to read and write or enrolled in
literacy classes.
•A
cquire vocational experience or willing
and able to be trained thereon.
•H
ave enough knowledge and capability
to work in the project.
•E
nsure that the part allocated for setting
up an income generating project can
serve as a basis for expanding the project
through the refund of the installments to
be collected from the beneficiaries.
•E
nsure that the woman head of household
can change her perception of herself so
that she can feel capable of supporting
her family, become self-dependent and
able to change the way she is perceived
by society.
•A
chieve additional goals such as assisting
in combating illiteracy and issue women
with national IDs.
