For every number, there’s a name. For every name, a story. Catholic Charities | 2007 Annual Report Dear Friends, Mission Mindful of the presence of God in our midst, we serve, empower and advocate for people in need. Vision We will be respected for compassion and excellence in service, strength in advocacy and leadership in addressing human needs. Values We value the dignity of each person and a just, responsive community for all. Ministry in Action To the battered woman and her children, we are shelter and safety. To the poor, the hungry, the homeless we are help and hope. To those faced with unplanned pregnancy, we are support and guidance. To the immigrant, we are a path to acceptance and participation. To the person immobilized by mental illness and addictions, we are a road to recovery. To the troubled family, we are a way to come together. Because we see injustice, we are a voice for social change. In 2007: 567 women and children found safety using our domestic violence services. 2,860 were cared for in our detoxification program. 63,005 received food from our pantries. As striking as these numbers are, it’s essential to remember that for every number, there’s a name — a person in need of help. The stories of the individuals and families who come to Catholic Charities often begin out of desperation or anger. Thankfully, many end in hope and achievement. In our 2007 Annual Report, you’ll meet Joy, who overcame a life on the run from domestic violence and now exudes a newfound confidence that allows her to raise her young son and go back to school. Tony rose above injuries and drug addiction to pursue his lifelong passion — and ended up winning big. Rich, Julie and birth mother LeAnn made room in their lives for love through the process of open adoption. And Tracy, a single parent, was in need of our food pantry’s services — and has since made the Dean’s list while working towards her degree as a medical assistant. Through our many programs, Catholic Charities reaches out to those in need — whether they are faced with domestic violence, mental illness, substance abuse, unplanned pregnancy or other emergency situations. Our programs provide sanctuary in times of overwhelming hardship, while opening doors for promising futures. Catholic Charities offers hope when it’s needed most. Not every story has a fairy tale ending, but I am in awe when I visit with our clients and hear their stories. They truly are the reason we do what we do every day at Catholic Charities. And it’s your spirit of generosity that gives us the chance to provide inspiration to our clients, so they can seek their own independence and success. As always, I thank you for encouraging our mission through your prayers, volunteerism and financial contributions. More than 86,000 people in our Archdiocese live in poverty, and the number of people in need of Catholic Charities’ unique services is increasing every day. Please consider a gift to Catholic Charities today, using the enclosed envelope. With your continued financial support, you can help us strive to make “happily ever after” the ending to all of our clients’ stories. God bless, Jerry C. Pape Executive Director “i i i i i love love love love love god, sobriety, my family, my job, my life.” tony Addiction and Recovery services A T5 paraplegic (paralyzed from the waist down), Tony suffered this fate at the age of 22 in a motorcycle accident while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Following his diagnosis, Tony continued his life of excess in order to blanket the ever-present guilt, shame and hopelessness that he felt inside. At the age of 37, Tony had a moment of clarity: he reached out to Catholic Charities. his is a story that defines our mission. Today, he is eight years sober and a treatment specialist at the Omaha Campus for hope, dedicating his life to helping others find the path to recovery. And he’s embraced his fate. Along the way, Tony became the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis champion in 2006, and continues to be a reckoning force on the court. “ i’m so grateful. i now have the confidence and peace of mind to move on to the next chapter of my life.” AddiCtion And ReCoVeRy seRViCes — 5,066 seRVed in 2007 oMAhA Adult seRViCes: Campus for hope Adult residential: 599 individuals Detox and Protective Custody: 2,860 individuals 3,459 individuals total outpatient Mental health and substance Abuse Outpatient: 474 individuals Assessments: 410 individuals 884 individuals total total clients served in omaha in 2007: 4,343 ColuMbus Adult seRViCes: Residential/outpatient Mental health and substance Abuse Residential: 32 individuals Outpatient: 376 individuals Assessments: 134 individuals total clients served in Columbus in 2007: 542 oMAhA AdolesCent seRViCes: Journeys Residential: 47 kids Outpatient: 63 kids Assessments: 71 kids total adolescents served in omaha in 2007: 181 Campus for hope 402.827.0570 1490 North 16th Street Joy domestic Violence services Growing up in Europe, Joy never envisioned that her life in the United States would find her pregnant, alone and on the run, escaping a physically abusive husband. She took a huge leap of faith in deciding to leave — not only for herself and her unborn child, but for the thousands of women who fear for their lives every day in this country. To see Joy today is to bear witness to her faith, in a life free of domestic violence and denial — one filled with love, laughter and happiness. Through our Emergency Shelter, she was able to find the safety, housing, tools and encouragement necessary to begin rebuilding her life. She is now living at Family Passages, our transitional housing, and is well on her way to receiving her nursing degree. She is able to enjoy every minute spent with her healthy baby boy. sheehan Center 402.554.0520 3300 North 60th Street Kelligar house 402.827.3495 4430 South 33rd Street doMestiC ViolenCe seRViCes — 5,755 seRVed in 2007 Columbus Center 402.563.3833 3020 18th Street Columbus Crisis calls received: 4,876 Individuals admitted to emergency and transitional housing: 259 women/308 children Individuals receiving counseling: 312 Journeys 402.898.4135 8255 South 42nd Street domestic Violence Crisis hotline 402.558.5700 Family passages 402.827.3688 (location undisclosed) the emergency shelter 402.554.0520 (location undisclosed) latina Resource Center 402.898.6760 5211 South 31st Street Follow our dreams. Most everyone is encouraged to do this in life. Tracy often thought that her day-to-day struggles as a single parent raising four children and a grandchild in North Omaha meant that her lifelong ambitions had to be put on hold, at best. When her sister told her about the services of St. Martin de Porres Center, Tracy saw hope. Our emergency food pantry allowed her to put food on the table. And through our Family Enrichment program, she found a solid support system that challenged her to set goals and reprioritize her life. Tracy is now well on her way to envisioning even bigger things for herself and her family. With a GPA to be proud of and graduation right around the corner, Tracy will soon begin her new career as a medical assistant. And most important to her — she is setting a wonderful example for her children. “ our kids know leAnn is not just Abby’s birth mom, she’s our birth leAnn + Abby Children’s services mom. leAnn’s just a really special part of our family.” — Julie “ the people at st. Martin were my support system, my sounding board, tracy my mentors, my friends Community outreach services and my worst enemy. they never let me get off track.” CoMMunity outReACh seRViCes — 65,670 seRVed in 2007 Food pantry 16,552 families/63,005 individuals Family enrichment/Christmas program 396 families/1,818 individuals Microbusiness training and development Total participation: 538 individuals Graduation rate: 82% Businesses opened: 34 Jobs created: 55 immigration legal Assistance 309 clients When Rich and Julie decided to adopt for the second time, they knew they wanted their second child to understand his or her roots. Their first daughter, Grace, had come from a semi-closed adoption — leaving them with more questions than answers. Meanwhile, LeAnn, a 17-year-old high school senior, faced an unplanned pregnancy. Catholic Charities provided her with counsel and guidance, so she could choose the path that was right for her. She decided an open adoption would give her the chance to pursue her goals while enjoying a lifelong, loving relationship with her child. LeAnn scoured hundreds of parent profiles before finding Rich and Julie. They clicked. She knew they would give her child a safe and special home. Today, Rich, Julie, Grace — and their newest addition, Abby — frequently get together with LeAnn for holidays, outings and quiet times. They enjoy each other’s company. And Rich and Julie have since reconnected with Grace’s birth family — giving both daughters the chance to bond with their birth moms. st.
