First Grade’s Newsletter September, 2016 First Grade – Gaston Point Elementary What We Are Learning in 1st Grade Reading – This month we are learning how to find key details in a text. We also learned how to ask and answer questions about key details in the text using the 5 W’s….ask your child about this. Writing – In writing, the students are demonstrating understanding of their illustrations by composing complete sentences about their illustrations. Math – This month we began Counting and Number Patterns to 120. You can help your first grader at home by practicing skip counting by 5s and 10s to 120. Word Study – We are focusing on words with short vowels. This is an adaptive learning method that is tailored specifically to your child’s learning needs. Your child can also work on ST Math at home. This is a computer learning pathway that develops critical thinking and problem solving skills without using words: Math without Words. Teachers will be sending information for you to login in to these programs at home along with your child’s user name and passwords. Homework Checklist Study Spelling Words Read the Story and Complete Questions. Complete Math problems. And most importantly…read EVERY DAY! 20 minutes before bed gets your child ahead!
