About IDF Walk for PI
IDF Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency unites the primary
immunodeficiency community to help create better lives
for individuals living with these rare and chronic diseases.
People with PI face an increased vulnerability to infections,
endure recurrent health problems and often develop serious
illnesses throughout their entire lives. They deserve better.
Founded in 1980, the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF)
is the national non-profit patient organization dedicated
to improving the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of
persons with PI through advocacy, education and research.
IDF Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency helps create better
lives for those living with these rare, chronic disorders, and fund vital programs and resources for
thousands of individuals and families. The walks bring together an entire community and have raised
over $2 million since the first walk in 2013.

IDF WALK TEAM CAPTAIN’S GUIDE

Being a Team Captain:
What does it mean?
Team captains are critical to the success of
IDF Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency.
As a team captain, you recruit, coach and motivate team members, all
while driving your own personal fundraising efforts. When teams hit their
fundraising goal, IDF is able to provide more support and resources to
the entire PI community. Because there is no cost to participate, your
leadership is critical in the success of IDF Walk for PI.
We encourage you, the team pro, to familiarize yourself with your IDF
Walk for PI Headquarters (HQ) – and all of the fantastic tools located
online. Your goal is to get your team – friends, family, co-workers – excited
about fundraising, and be sure you recognize their successes.
We’ve outlined some important tips and tricks for you, but keep in mind that the
earlier you start, the more likely your team will be to hit your fundraising goals.

How
to
Raise
Getting Started
$125
in 4 Weeks!
A personal ask is usually
the best way to secure
donations. Use this plan to
raise $125 in just 4 weeks.

Recruit, Recruit, Recruit
How much do you hope to raise as a team? The average walker raises around
$125 and most teams supplement their grand total with additional fundraisers.
If you recruit 10 walkers ($125 each) and have a fundraiser ($500 total),
consider a goal of $1,750 or more!
Make a starter gift to yourself
on your fundraising page
Week 2
Ask or e-mail 5 family members
or friends for $10 each
Make an impact through your fundraising web page by updating the default
content to your own story and include a personal photo or video. Take initiative
by making the first donation to encourage others to get the ball rolling!
Do you know 10 people who would consider giving $10 to a cause that means
a lot to you and your family? Write down a list of family, friends, coworkers, and
neighbors that may be interested in making a difference for the PI community.
Did you know that the average person is asked three times to do something
before they take action? Instead of being discouraged if you don’t get a
response right away, think of creative ways to follow up!
• Use multiple platforms of communication to share why IDF Walk for PI is
important to you.
• Utilize the email templates, share the URL to your team page, hang
posters around your city, and reach out on social media.
• Be sure to include photos to capture the emotional impact of the walk.

It’s All About the Fundraising!
Make the Ask!
The #1 reason people give is because they are asked!
E-mail: Upload your contact list from your email provider (Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook, etc.) directly to your IDF Walk for PI
HQ. This is an easy way to track who has joined your team, received your emails or donated. Send an email using our
template asking your friends and family to join your team or make a donation.
Social Media: Are you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or some other type of social media? These can be valuable tools
for recruiting team members and raising funds. Use the hashtags #WalkforPI #THINKZEBRA #zebrastrong in all of your posts.
Phone: Call the people you are closest with and ask them to support your efforts for a more intimate conversation about
the importance of their participation.
Mail: Write or type a letter and add a few photos of you and your family at the walk. Mail to your friends and colleagues to
catch up and ask for their support.
In-Person: Why not ask for a donation in person?! People are more likely to donate when they are asked in person than
any other form of communication because the conversation is more in-depth and personal.
Be sure to thank your potential donors for their time, whether they give to you or not!
Tip: the best days to ask for donations are Friday, the 15th and last day of the month, which are paydays for many!

forget to support your team members! Provide the following suggestions to them:

Personal
Web Pages
Beat the
Average
Encourage your team members to
personalize their personal page.
Make it a goal to have every member
beat our $125 fundraising average.
Email
Campaign
Prizes
Team
Incentives
Host an email sending party at your house, a
Panera, Starbucks or another local place with
WiFi. Have every team member bring their
tablet or laptop and send emails out together!
IDF has some fantastic prizes again
this year! Don’t forget - all walkers
who raise $100 or more score their
own free Walk for PI t-shirt.
Remind your team members that
people will give if they are asked!
Don’t let them get discouraged.
You can come up with some
great items to encourage your
team to keep fundraising!
Tip: Avoid setting a minimum for team members to earn a team t-shirt if you decide to design one.
Most participants will make a donation for that amount and not do any additional fundraising.

Racing to the
Finish Line!
Do You Match?
You and your team members can double or triple
the impact of your generosity by getting your
employers to match your gifts to IDF.
Organize an Event!
Think outside of the box to get those extra dollars in.
Below are a number of other ideas you can use to raise extra money and
awareness. Check out our additional fundraising tips online!
Workout benefiting IDF Walk for PI held by top
fundraising team at local gym.
Everyone has to eat! Try holding a bake sale (donuts, cookies, cakes, and pies), hoagie/grinder sales, pizza
sales, ice cream socials, or candy sales at your work or next meeting.
Ask your employer to conduct a Dress Down Day for their employees and ask for donations to participate.
Host a restaurant night! Most restaurants will donate a percentage of sales from guests who have a special pass.
The IDF office has paper icons that our walkers can use to fundraise! You can sell them from your desk at
work, at your favorite pizza place, or any other place that will let you!.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the IDF Order of the Zebra?
The IDF Order of the Zebra is an elite group of fundraisers whose efforts make an
extraordinary impact on the success of IDF Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency.
If you set a fundraising goal of $1,000 or more on your personal fundraising page,
and reach that goal, you will be inducted into the IDF Order of the Zebra.
What happens if it rains?
Like the effects of PI go on, so do we – rain, snow or shine. Please
dress accordingly.
What kind of food and activities happen at the walk?
There will be a variety of fun things going on at the walk, including meeting and mingling with
other members of the community and our sponsors. There will be several food options. If you
have special dietary restrictions, we suggest that you bring along your own snacks.
Do I need to raise a certain amount to participate?
There is no required minimum to participate, but all walkers who raise $100 or more by the day of their walk will
receive an official IDF Walk for PI t-shirt at the event.
How do I earn and redeem prizes?
We have a variety of other great prizes available for those who raise $250 or more. You will be sent an email
when the online prize claim form is ready, which is typically six weeks post walk. Once you complete the claim
form, you will receive your incentive in about six weeks.
What do I need to bring with me to the walk?
Any gifts that you may have collected beforehand that you didn’t already sent to the office (no cash please!),
comfortable walking shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather.
What is the difference between team and individual fundraising?
Donations can be credited individually to a walker or to the team. Team donations do not count toward an
individual’s efforts or to their prize redemption. By donating to a walker (or a team), you are supporting the team
the walker is on and, of course, to IDF Walk for PI as a whole. All donations to an individual are included into the
team total. Fundraising prizes and incentives are based on an individual’s fundraising success.
Who do I make checks payable to?
Please make all checks payable to Immune Deficiency Foundation. Thank you!
