Discuss critically the scenarios on current student facilities in UKM and strategies for improvement to enable UKM to reach the status of a world class University. CAFETERIA EYE-SORING INFRASTRUCTURES STUDENT LIFE CENTRE PROBLEMS WE FACE AT UKM KL CAMPUS POOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT POOR SPORTS FACILITIES PROBLEM 1: EYE SORING INFRASTRUCTURES The paint on the college building is chipping off and creates an unpleasant sight. Decorate the empty walls with unique arts and murals How To Solve ? Repaint the buildings & according to the identities of each faculty Paint the buildings according to the faculties’ identities Create positive and friendly environment for students Give good impression to visitors, academic guests and foreign students Decorate empty walls with unique arts and murals Give freshness to the campus landscape Creates cheerful and happy mood in students PROBLEM 2: CAFETERIA Food is an important source for students especially to fuel our brain Problems we face in the cafeteria . Poor cleanliness of the food, workers and the cafeteria - Cats roaming around. - Insects and worms found in the food. - Workers don’t wear complete attire; gloves. Very limited choices of food - No Indian and Chinese food stalls Poor quality of food - Not well cooked at times. - No taste. IMPROVEMENTS Implement strict cleanliness rules • Fine the owner when workers do not wear gloves or caps while cooking. • Fine the owner when cleanliness level is below than required. • Regular inspection. Set up stalls providing Indian, Chinese, Western and etc ‘halal’ food • To cater students of variety races and religions. • Foreign students can experience our diverse Malaysian cuisines. Well planned menus Hire well experienced cook • Have vegetarian, vegan and healthy options. • To improve the quality and taste of the food that complements the price. PROBLEM 3: POOR SPORTS FACILITIES Poor sports facilities - No swimming pool - No bicycle services Problems Hard to get sport equipments - Have to travel to Bangi Upgrade the sports facilities 1. Provide self-rent bicycle services Matrics card should be used to rent bicycle. This effort is toward “green campus”. Can rent and park at different colleges or faculties. 2. Availability of free sport equipmentS • Students can easily borrow sports equipment. • Broken sports equipment need to be replace by the student himself. • In order to promote healthy lifestyle to students. PROBLEM 4: STUDENT LIFE CENTRE PROBLEMS WE FACE: Lack of leisure, recreational and entertainment facilities Lack of discussion and meeting rooms Lack of interaction between students from different courses or faculties Increasing level of stress among the students. No space or lounge for students to relax and for entertainment. A channel to release pent up anger, frustration and tension. No televisions in each block. IMPROVEMENTS Set up Student Life Centre Set up a reading corner - Provide daily newspapers and educational magazines - Students can bring old storybooks and novels Provide games and activities for the students - Board games, card games, table games such as foosball A conducive place for students to relax and organize non-academic activities Good wireless internet connection A huge television set for large number of viewers during important sports games or TV news Provide more discussion rooms An interactive center where students can interact and mingle around PROBLEM 5: POOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT Why need to save energy? Save Money Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduce Air Pollution Invest in power-saving technologies. Installation of Timers and Other Energy Saving Devices •This is an energy-saving software product that turns off company lights, airconds, desktops and laptop PCs that are connected to the internal network each night. HOW? Explore alternative energy. •Alternative energy can be an intimidating investment. It's expensive and still relatively new. Example: Solar or wind power. Eliminate unneeded cooling, remove or unplug unused equipments CONCLUSION Thus, this UKM KL campus needs a major makeover as a jumpstart towards improving the facilities in the university to achieve the world class university title in the near future. To make this happen, students must work together with the student council and the administration board to improve the current facilities and develop new ones to occupy the students’ needs.
