Sports Handbook 2016/2017 - St Aidan`s Anglican Girls School

St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School
sports ha ndbook
From the Heads of Sport
All St Aidan’s students can take part in sport as part of their extra-curricular activities. There
are a range of sports offered to St Aidan’s girls to cater for their different interests. St Aidan’s
encourages all girls to participate in a sport, whether it is for fun and recreation or to compete at
the top level.
St Aidan’s has a strong history in sport with girls competing at State, National and International
Levels.
The School offers a wide range of sports over the course of the year with three core sports
(Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming) along with 12 sports in the Senior School and 6 sports
in the Junior School. This wide variety maximises the opportunity for students to participate in a
range of sports throughout the year.
Sport is important for the overall well-being of a girl, because it improves both mental and physical
health. Sport improves fitness which is important because it encourages strong muscle and bone
development. Sport can also help develop increased confidence and self-awareness, improved
self-esteem and self-image. Participation in a sport also improves the ability to deal with stress
which can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. For these reasons it is especially
important that girls completing their high school studies take some time out to participate in a
sporting activity.
Sport can also add ‘value’ to other subjects that students are completing. It contributes to a more
disciplined attitude, which can be applied throughout their life. Sport develops essential social
and motor skills and further develops problem solving and creativity. Lastly, sport encourages
perseverance, which can be transferred to all aspects of a student’s life.
Sport at St Aidan’s thus encourages students to become the best they can be, both on and off the
sporting field.

St Aidan’s sport philosophy
4
The St Aidan’s sports philosophy draws upon
the School’s tagline, “Confidence and Success”,
whereby the role of school sport is defined as:
1. A combination of skills development as
well as providing an environment in which
students can develop a sense of self-worth
and belief.
2. A means by which students can, within
a secure environment, learn to accept
personal responsibility and undertake
social and emotional growth.
Thus, school-based sport can be seen to be
inextricably linked to the broader concept of
pastoral care, which makes “sport” much more
important than simply ”physical activity” for its
own sake.
The St Aidan’s sports’ philosophy also
emphasises that “with opportunity comes
responsibility”, and encourages students to take
ownership of the challenges they face on the
sporting field. Moreover, it is how St Aidan’s girls
respond to these challenges that will eventually
define them, not the challenges themselves.
In the Senior School, St Aidan’s sports’ philosophy can be summed up thus:
WANT The School can provide students with sporting opportunities to achieve their goals, but ultimately students need to “buy in” to the philosophy themselves. As a result of this, they need to learn to truly believe in their potential for success, which is defined as “how far you’ve come from where you started”.
PERSEVERE CONTROL Perhaps most importantly, students need to demonstrate resilience when they encounter the inevitable speed bumps that are a natural part of sport, and indeed, life.
Students need to learn not to worry about the things they can’t control such as the quality of the opposition, officiating decisions or the ‘bounce of the ball’; They do however have 100% control over the two most important things: the attitude they take onto the field; and how they choose to respond to whatever challenges they may face.
In the Junior School, our philosophy is focused on providing the opportunity for students to
participate and develop their skills for the enjoyment of sport.
OPPORTUNITY PARTICIPATION
The program aims to provide every child the opportunity to be involved in a diverse range of core and team sports.
The program fosters a supportive and inclusive sporting program where all students participate in a variety of activities.
DEVELOPMENT The delivery of a sporting program where students develop their
knowledge and understanding through a holistic approach of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
SKILLS
ENJOYMENT The program promotes the enjoyment of sport through the building blocks of motivation, confidence, physical competence and an understanding and knowledge of the value of physical activity to enhance the quality of life.
s por ts ha ndbook
The program educates students on a wide range of skills ranging from fundamental movement competence, game sense, sport specific and match play.

In Semester One, girls can participate in Netball and

Years 4, 5 & 6 can participate in Netball, Tennis

•
Year 5 & 6 can particpate in Softball.
Friday Afternoon Sport (Prep - Year 4)
All girls are eligible to try out for these sports
(voluntary), but must commit to attending training
sessions, once selected in a team or squad.
Club Activities have been organised for Friday
afternoons with the emphasis on skill development,
team participation, fitness and fun.
Trials for Andrews Cup are posted on the e-news, St
Aidan’s App and on the Junior School noticeboard. Team
selection involves a stringent process with students
being selected on ability and proven performance
(carnivals, trials) in a given sport. Due to a limit placed
on schools regarding the number of teams they are able
to nominate, not all girls can be selected.
During the Interschool Sporting seasons, a variety of
sports and activities are offered to Prep-Year 4 students
not involved in the Interschool Sporting competition.
These sports and activities vary throughout the
year depending on the availability of coaching staff
and equipment. Throughout the year, girls have the
opportunity to choose a number of sports to gain a
variety of experience.
