Math Unit 5: Combinations within 5 Focus for this Unit: Five will be the first structural group in the base-10 number system to be incorporated in the problem solving structures. Students will solve addition and subtraction using manipulatives, pictures and numerical symbols to represent real-world situations. They use these experiences with composition and decomposition to begin building fluency of number combinations within 5. How will my child apply what they have learned in this unit in the future? In future units, students will apply their number sense knowledge to solve greater problems. This includes: ● Extending their knowledge of combinations within 5 to combinations within 10 ● Building fluency with these facts ● Solving story problems How can I help my child at home? ● ● ● ● ● ● Practice counting to 100 and time how long it takes your child to do so. Use any objects that you have at home to work on addition and subtraction within F IVE . For example, “There were 5 pennies. I wanted to buy 2 gumballs so I took 2 pennies away, now how many pennies do I have?” “There were 4 Barbie dolls playing, how many more Barbie dolls do I need to make five?” Use any objects that you have at home to work on addition and subtraction within T EN . For example, “Put 10 Cheerios on the plate. Take 4 away. How many are left?” “We need 3 napkins and 5 forks. How many things do we need on the table for dinner tonight? Ask your child problems for them to figure out in their head and to answer ORALLY. Encourage them to u se their fingers if needed. “What is 2 plus 0?, What is 5 take away 1?, What is 4 plus 1?, “What is 3 take away 2?” Play “Go Fish” with playing cards, however, instead of making a pair with the same number (a 2 with a 2) make pairs that equal a given number within 5 or 10. Put a number of pennies or whatever you have in your hand and show your child how many there are. Then put some in one hand and put that hand behind your back. Ask your child, “How many are in my hidden hand?” Start with the number 2 or 3. When your child masters all combinations of that number, move onto the next number.
