It appears that most of the world's major cities have serious traffic
congestion, making life difficult for local citizens. There are several causes for
this problem, but also solutions.
To begin with, major cities are crowded places. People choose to live in
cosmopolitan and industrial cities for increased work and educational
opportunities. Secondly, millions of people living in a major city results in
congestion and traffic problems. Therefore, the issue of effective public
transportation must be discussed.
Transportation is a major problem in some cities. Without an effective bus
or subway system, people will travel by private car which causes traffic
congestion.
It appears the way to reduce congestion is to simply reduce the number of
private cars on the road. Hence, public transportation must be improved.
People will use public transportation if it is convenient. It would seem
that building an underground subway system as well as creating “bike lanes” are
some possible solutions. In fact, some cities such as New York and Chicago
have already succeeded in building bike lanes, making it easier to use bicycles
as a form of “public transportation”. Other cities will also implement similar plans
in the foreseeable future.
In conclusion, better public transportation will do much to alleviate the
issue of traffic in major cities. Traffic congestion is a serious problem, but it can
definitely be solved.

Some students prefer to live in University dormitories. However, other students choose to live in
apartments within the community. I think both of these options have advantages and disadvantages
which I will discuss below.
On the one hand, living in a dormitory has many benefits. First of all, living on-campus is a good
opportunity for a foreign student to improve his/her communication skills and to make new friends.
Second of all, a dormitory has many useful facilities and amenities such as a library, a cafeteria,
high speed wifi on campus etc. In addition to these practical benefits, living in a dormitory is often
much cheaper which is definitely considered a plus. Finally, living on campus provides students the
opportunity to ask classmates for additional help about issues that were unclear in class and
lectures. This in turn, leads to higher grades. Basically, living in a dormitory helps students
become more social, good team players as well as allowing them 24/7 access to libraries and other
University resources.
On the other hand, living in off-campus apartments also presents some benefits. Students have
more privacy and more freedom to choose where to live according to their preferences. Working
students will find this option attractive as convenience and location are important factors.
Unfortunately however, they will not be able to take full advantage of their time as a student and
this is certainly the primary disadvantage when living off campus.
In conclusion, even though I feel both options do provide advantages and disadvantages, living on
campus is the best option for students who really want to make the most out of their time while in the
University.

Dear Mr. _________,
Good afternoon, Thank you for addressing the issue of traffic congestion here in
______. I completely agree with your point of view and solutions. In addition to your
suggestions, I am convinced that “bike lanes” would be an excellent addition here in
_______. Other major cities such as New York and Chicago have already started this
new form of “public transportation”, and I certainly feel we can manage as well.
It seems to me that we should build an extensive network of new bicycle lanes here in
________ . Years ago I spent a year living in The Hague, in the Netherlands. I rode a
bicycle every day — to school, to see friends, to the park and to shop. It was a glorious
year.
The Dutch have built a complete infrastructure for their bicycles. All cities, towns and
highways have separate bicycle lanes, with curbs separating the bike from the auto
traffic. And the downtowns have bicycle parking garages scattered here and there, where
the bikes are stacked and hung in very small spaces, allowing for storage off the street or
sidewalk.
From my point of view, using both public transportation and cycling to school or work
will greatly reduce the number of private cars on the road. Hence, less traffic congestion
overall. Just my personal thoughts.
Thank you.
Best,
JAMES HADLEY

Advantages vs Disadvantages: apartments vs houses
In big cities there are two options available in terms of accommodation:
houses and apartments. Some people prefer to live in apartments while
others choose to live in houses.
Most people who live in major cities are either working or studying;
hence, apartments provide a comfortable, convenient and safe lifestyle.
The advantages include the fact there is usually a security staff on duty
or at least the use of a video/intercom security system. In addition,
residents can choose the size of the apartment, which could help reduce
rent prices. However, apartment lifestyles usually mean less privacy and
dealing with the possibility of difficult neighbors.
On the other hand, private houses are also a possibility and offer even
greater options. For example, those who enjoy greater privacy or
outdoor space will find private houses an attractive option.
Furthermore, most houses have a garage which eliminates the need to
pay for private parking. Nevertheless, most houses are much more
expensive to rent than apartments which is why they are not usually the
first choice for most people.
In conclusion, both apartments and housing have their pros and cons.
For most people though, the fact an apartment is “cost-efficient” is the
primary reason to choose an apartment over a private house.

People succeed because of their hard work; luck has nothing to do with success.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
It is believed that people will achieve their goals and have successful careers if they work hard, and
luck has no effect on it. To a certain point, I would agree that some people are successful due to
their diligence and hard work, but I do believe that luck also plays an important part in peoples lives
as well.
On the one hand, it is true people achieve the most if they work hard and diligently. People who
have great determination, integrity and a positive attitude are unlike the average, ordinary workers.
These extraordinary people have made success a priority in their lives and believe that the only
requirements to achieve success are hard work, determination and a focused plan in life.
On the other hand, although some people might not believe in luck, others feel that luck has
definitely affected their performance and achievements. For example, there are people who display
average work performance and are still promoted by their superiors. Similarly, there are several
salesmen who do not approach their potential customers aggressively, but somehow manage to
achieve their sales target. For this group of people, they are convinced that luck has truly affected
their careers.
In conclusion, even though some people believe the only way to succeed is through hard work,
there are always exceptional cases. Therefore, the answer to the question is a personal choice and
it is impossible to have only one “right” or “wrong” answer when it comes to such an issue.
Dear Ms. _________,
Good afternoon,
Thank you for advising your readers about “healthy eating” here in ______. As a medical
doctor, I completely agree with you that your best health “begins in the kitchen”.
However, you neglect to mention one critical issue: sugar addiction. Quite frankly, giving up
sugar is the first step towards looking and feeling your best at any age.
First of all, scientific evidence has clearly proven sugar causes both negative physical and
mental changes in people. Besides causing diabetes, sugar also causes negative hormonal
changes and feeds cancer cells in both men and women. Second of all, because food
manufacturers secretly put sugar into almost all foods, people have become addicted to sugar
and cannot give it up.
Therefore, in addition to eating fresh foods and learning “portion control” (for example, eating
5 or 6 small meals throughout the day), we must encourage people to stop eating sugar. A
small amount of organic, raw honey is fine once or twice a day, but not more than that.
I strongly believe we should communicate this message to the public as much as possible. If
you would like me to write a detailed article regarding “Sugar Dangers” in the future, I would be
happy to do so. Please advise.
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
