Health & Safety Management Emergency Spills Procedure (Chemicals) May 2017. This sites spills kit is stored in ……………………………………………………...................... DOC135 (V2) 1 What to do in the event of a spillage? Assess the spill. Do you know what the spillage is or where it is coming from? - If you know what is causing the spillage and are trained to deal with this substance proceed to the next step. If you do NOT know what the spillage is or it is coming from a waste pipe please contact the site management team and/or Inner London Cleaning Ltd Management ASAP. In the event that you believe the spillage maybe toxic or a significant risk to yourself or others health please contact the Fire Brigade immediately on 999. If the spillage Small - If the spillage is small (drips, spots etc) then the spillage can be mopped/wiped up as per normal cleaning procedures. If you are unsure on the amount that is safe to do this for please refer to the chemicals COSSH Risk Assessment and Safety Data Sheet. If the spillage is Large – If the spillage is large then proceed with the Emergency Spills Procedure. Where is the spillage – Check that the spillage has not spread to any water storage or electrical equipment. If this has happened please report immediately to the site management team and Inner London Cleaning Ltd management. In the case of electrical equipment insure that the electric supply has been isolated or switched off before proceeding with cleanup. Make area safe – Ensure safety signage is placed around the area so that nobody slips on the spillage and ventilate the area as best as possible by opening windows or doors. Emergency Spills Procedure. Obtain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – When uncertain of the level of PPE needed for the spillage, always choose the highest possible available (provided in the site spill kit). Contain the spill – Once wearing the correct PPE begin to contain the spill at the source. This may be from broken containers or leaking buckets. Next prevent the spread of the spill by using absorbent socks, pillows or pads. If the spillage is outside prevent the chemical from getting into drains or water supplies. If a large amount does escape please report to the necessary agencies immediately. Absorb the spill – Once contained start to absorb the spill using the pads provided in the spill kit. Work towards the middle of the spillage (outside to DOC135 (V2) 2 inside). Push absorbent sock/pads along the ground towards the center of the spill. If the spillage is larger than the absorbent sock/pillow the use another absorbent pad. Ensure cleanup is complete – Once the spillage has been absorbed place all materials used in the yellow waste bags provided in the spill kit. Remember to keep PPE on at this time, as the absorbent pads do not neutralize the chemical. The bag is then to be sealed and placed in a container to await collection and proper disposal within 24 hours. Once the bag is sealed PPE can be rinsed and reused. Clean the area of the spill – Once the spillage has been absorbed mop or wipe the area using warm water. Once this is done proceed with cleaning the area as per the normal cleaning procedure. After the spillage is cleaned up. Replace used equipment and report spillage. Report the spillage to the Inner London Cleaning Ltd Management once the area is safe. Ensure that the spillage has been logged and reported correctly and that all equipment used has been replaced.
