Quezada Superintendent of Schools Dear Senior: The Yonkers Public Schools believes that college is available to every student who wants to pursue a postsecondary education. To assist students offset college cost, the District compiled a booklet containing information about various local scholarships available to the Class of 2017. The scholarships in this booklet are sponsored by a number of Yonkers community organizations that will make the final determination as to award recipients, but there are countless other opportunities available to graduating seniors. Therefore, it is not only important for you to carefully review this booklet with your parents/guardians, but you should also directly confer with school counselors regarding the additional national and state scholarships. Counselors will also guide you to available financial aid assistance and help you complete the forms. The Naviance program (www.naviance.com/) is a useful tool for college and scholarship searches, and, more importantly, the completion of online scholarship applications. It is imperative that you create and use your Naviance accounts to support you throughout the college process. If you need login information contact you school counselor. The Yonkers Public Schools, is educating students to meet the challenges of an economically competitive, technologically advanced, culturally diverse, and knowledge-based twenty-first century society. This scholarship booklet is one of many steps toward achieving the goal of a meaningful post-secondary education. Best wishes for your continued success. Sincerely, Dr. Edwin M. PAUL M. MITCHELL, SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS TO THE YONKERS PTA COUNCIL OCTOBER 23, 1968 AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL In addition to courage and wisdom in innovation, a school district must also have a source of stability and vitality; a source which can be used as a yardstick to measure its educational progress. I believe these ideals, beliefs, and traditions, which are interwoven in the American Creed, constitute that source. The Creed is still a core of commonly accepted working principles, not absolute and subject to different interpretations, but is has enough uniformity of meaning to be used as the moral basis of social justice and as a guide to social direction. I believe this uniformity of meaning would be found in the following beliefs: A belief that all human beings are of supreme and equal moral worth; A belief that human beings should be the architects of their own destiny; A belief that the state is a creation of the people and subservient to them; A belief that human intelligence can build a better world; A belief in the rule of self-imposed written law; A belief in the rule of the majority with the protection of the minority; A belief in the rights of peaceful social change; A belief in the right of the individual to be free in all respects not harmful to the common good; A belief in the rights of the individual to expect reasonable economic security. In a time of which it is said that no man who is born today will die in the same world into which he was born, these beliefs can make it possible for a man to stand with his feet anchored in unshakable convictions; to breathe in atomic atmosphere laden with change and with portends of greater change yet to come; and to reach into the unknown. He will be able to reach with the confidence that he can mold from the chaos of value conflicts, a foundation; even different from his own if need be but one upon which his sons may stand with the confidence and understanding necessary to go forward. 57 YONKERS COUNCIL OF PARENT/TEACHER ASSOCIATIONS Mabel Bell Humanitarian Award SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS: An outstanding Yonkers public high school senior who has dedicated time and effort in a multitude of activities; who unselfishly volunteers of him/herself and who is respected by his/her peers.
