Come and Play 2017
There is something unique, something astonishing and something magical happening in
Gippsland, shared by those lucky enough to experience it…. be one of them!
Come and Play - All of May, celebrating the arts of Gippsland is an initiative of the
Creative Gippsland network. It is a month long celebration of arts and cultural activities
from Mallacoota to Phillip Island.
In 2017, its eighth year, this arts celebration has been designed with you in mind, encouraging
you to make, and perhaps take, the arts home with you. Bass Coast will play host to an
exciting array of events, centred around the theme of awareness.
We hope you join us and Come and Play in Bass Coast this May.

BLUSH OF FRUIT
In a modest three storey home located in the
beachside town in Nha Trang (central Vietnam),
reside four young expectant mothers. With
their pregnancies hidden from their families,
they are given shelter. But in return they must
care for the centre’s 18 orphaned children.
The home’s owner, Tong Phuoc Phuc, has been
praised by the country’s Prime Minister for his
work as an anti-abortionist and a saviour to
‘fallen’ women and their unwanted children.
But there is a darker side to the home’s mediasavvy front. Referred to as a ‘business’ by the
mothers and their local community, donations
continue to pour in, despite evidence of child
abuse and profiteering.

Capturing the Light:

In this workshop participants will create a
water colour painting featuring the unique
light and mood of our beautiful Bass Coast
beaches at sunrise or sunset.
This is a two hour workshop for people
who think they aren’t creative, or they can’t
draw.
We provide a comfortable and encouraging
environment, and safe method of
experimentation to discover that “You are
and you can!”
Julie Rogers is a Contemporary Realist
Artist, specialising in water colour works
on paper. Julie has taught art in schools, and
now teaches adults in her home studio. She
has been painting for 30 years. Her work
depicts landscapes, seascapes, flora and
fauna, and express her love for the colour
and beauty of creation.
Using a unique mandala stencil, and beautiful
pastels and pencils, we want you to colour
outside the lines! With no parameters
you will become aware of your creative
connection. Once your creative juices are
flowing, we stay in the mindful moment
with a free-drawing session, using still life to
really “see”, then sit back with a lovely glass
of wine, or juice, and nibbles to admire and
discuss your work.

In this workshop we’ll explore how mood
changes when using brush, paper and
pigments. The ‘Colour Calm’ workshop
is time, space, and a place where there is
absolutely no expectation of producing a
‘piece of hangable ART’ (but you might
surprise yourself) but where you find a
place to breathe deep and to restore your
inner calm. Express and enjoy yourself.
You will learn how to turn your old books
into beautiful Christmas decorations that
will look amazing on your tree or make a
beautiful gift for someone this Christmas.

at many forms of Art and Craft; painting,
sculpting, jewellery design, card making

Studio 40 was established at Inverloch in
November 2009, to become the working
studio of artist Ray Dahlstrom. The local
environments had always been a feature
of Ray’s work, so the rugged coast, sandy
beaches and changing seasons have been
major influences on his work. In recent
times, Ray’s work has been affected by the
dramatic influences of climate change on
the environment.
Located in a delightful pocket of southern
Victoria, Goat Island Gallery is an
established part of the Bass Coast art scene.
The acres of gardens, pastures and wetlands
surrounding the gallery make it a unique
setting for owner/artist, Frank Schooneveldt.
For Frank - it is an inspirational place to
create and display work. For visitors - it is
a tranquil and surprising place to share that
experience.
View Ray’s recent work and learn about
the current and past issues that influence
his painting.
We are part of the Cosmos even if it’s just a
minuscule part. The Big Bang occurred 13.8
billion years ago. There are 3.5 billion stars in
our Galaxy. There are half a trillion galaxies in
the universe. ‘A speck in the cosmos’ is Frank
Schooneveldt’s response.
