Attadale Netball Club
Guidelines for Team Managers
This booklet is intended as a resource for team managers in the Attadale Netball Club.
We hope team managers will find this useful in organising their team for the season. We have
referred to material in the Attadale Netball Club By-Laws (Club Policies & Procedures)
booklet. Extracts from the By-Laws are typed in italics in the document.
Club Objectives
• To promote and encourage the playing of netball in the District.
• To provide opportunities for girls and boys of all abilities to participate in Netball
competition.
• To assist and act for the members in all activities pertaining to the game of netball.
Team Management
Each team shall appoint a Team Manager/Captain who shall be responsible for:
• Organizing and supervising team rosters for scoring and timing, and umpiring duties as
allocated by FNA for their team.
• Assisting coaches in all team affairs and acting as liaison between Players/ Parents and the
coach.
• To organize and administer a point system, in liaison with the coach, to determine the
Fairest and best Player in each team.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO ACHIEVE THESE
Assistant Team Manager
Organise an assistant who can share the tasks with you. This works well, particularly if you are
away or unavailable at any time during the season.
Team Contact List
Confirm with the coach who is the team contact for player unavailability. Generally the coach is
the best contact for this. Team manager is the best contact for all other information. This
information could be included on the team contact list.
Website
All club news and information will be on the Attadale Netball Club website at
www.attadalenetballclub.com
Check the website for resources on umpiring, coaching, uniforms, and more.
Umpiring
2016 Umpiring Coordinator: Kate Bond
[email protected]
Each team has an umpiring duty for each game they play as determined by FNA.
Senior grades provide their own umpire for a game in the grade below their own, and this must be
organised by each individual team.
All other grades provide an umpire for their own game and this is organised by the Umpiring
Coordinator, so as Team Manager of a Juniors, 17U, or 19U team, you don’t need to worry about
doing this.
The Team Manager is responsible for:
• Collecting money from the team to reimburse the umpire during the season
• Payment to the umpire, required by half time each week (this enables the umpire to leave
promptly for other commitments)
• If a scheduled umpire is relieved by an FNA umpire, the team shall still pay the
umpiring fee to the scheduled Attadale umpire
Please contact the Umpiring Coordinator to find out your team’s weekly umpiring fee
requirement, as it may vary from year to year
Additional Seniors responsibilities:
• Checking (and double checking!) umpire availability each week
• Making sure the umpire has arrived for the game
• Failure to provide an umpire for your game means your team receives a fine and a loss of
points
• If you have any problems on the day, please contact the Umpiring Coordinator, another
committee member, or your team coordinator, as soon as possible to try and arrange an
alternative
Umpire support:
• Please support and encourage our umpires. Many of them are young, and all of them are
constantly learning and developing
• If there are any serious problems please speak to the Umpiring Coordinator or an Attadale
Netball Club committee member, so that they can discuss it with you and seek a positive
outcome
• Please do not speak to the umpire during the game or at intervals, and be courteous
before and after the game. If the team needs to clarify rules, the Team Captain (a player)
may approach the umpire at an interval to ask questions
• Remember that without them we cannot play the game!
Rosters
Each team is required to supply either a scorer or timekeeper for each match, and to supply an in
umpire each week (see notes on umpiring). You will need a roster for this a copy for a suggested
roster is attached.
Usually the daughter or son of the family that is timing or scoring is also on fruit or jelly lollies
roster and is captain for the day.
Make sure each family gets a copy of the roster prior to the first match. Inform parents
that if any date does not suit that they are to arrange a swap and to inform you of this.
Half Time Fruit/Jelly Lollies
This is an option for your team. Please check with the team coach prior to the season start to decide
what will best suit the team, and for creating a roster for bringing the half time fruit/lollies.
Drinks
Each player will need to bring their own drink bottle containing water.
The club has some water bottle holders but not sufficient to provide one for each team. Your team
may be allocated a carrier that is shared between 2 or 3 teams that have different playing times
scheduled.
Some teams in previous years have bought their own carrier for the team. The basket helps to
keep drinks in one place, making it easier to organise drinks during the game breaks.
Suggestion: It is a good idea to delegate the carrier to one parent. They are responsible for bringing
the carrier to each game and taking it home each week. Drink bottles should be collected before the
game and taken out to the player during game breaks.
First Aid Kit
The club supplies a first aid kit which will initially be stocked, with each team kit. You may
need to replenish the kit at times during the season. Contact the Property Manager for any
replacements.
Senior First Aid is available at the FNA club house on match days. It is important that, for any
injuries that occur during the match that may require further medical treatment that the player
reports to the FNA First Aid, If required wheelchairs are available at the first aid room.
Suggestion: it is a good idea to find out If there are any health professionals or senior first aiders
among your teams parents.
Icepacks
The club does not supply icepacks in the team kits. Team Managers may wish to bring one or two
themselves to the game or organise with the parents for this to happen. Ice is available at FNA but the
player must attend the first aid room for treatment.
During training at Troy Park there is a fully stocked First Aid Kit at the side of the courts. Ice
packs are available in the clubrooms at Troy Park.
Money Collection
The Team Manager is responsible for collection of money for:
• Weekly umpiring fees
• Other events such as movies, raffles, special events.
• Gifts for coaches (if your team chooses to do this)
Suggestion: it is a great idea to arrange one or two team get-togethers during the season, especially
if you have new families in your team.
NOTE: Fees for the end of year windup have been included in the player registration fees.
Balls and Bibs
A match ball and team bibs re supplied in the manager’s team kit. These are for Saturday games
only and it is recommended that they are kept with the match gear. We recommend that the
manager's bag is not brought to training.
Training balls are supplied to coach directly but they may ask a parent to look after them.
Training balls and match balls must be kept pumped up. A pump is available in the
uniform /meeting room at Troy Park or outside the administration office at Gibson Park on
match days.
Match Times and Courts
Information regarding fixtures are available from the Fremantle Netball Association website at
www.fremantlenetball.com.au
Suggestion: combining playing times and team details on your roster makes organization a little
easier.
Score Card
Each team will receive a set of 7 scorecards from FNA at the beginning of the season. The team
who is scoring must provide the scorecard for that week, and most teams will score 7 times. If
you need additional scorecards, you can ask at the FNA office. Additional scorecards may incur
a small fee.
Is the team manager's responsibility to:
• Fill in the scorecard before the game
• Make sure that the scorecard is signed by both the team captains and umpires at the end
of the match
• Make sure the scorecard is sent to the FNA office by the winning team
Suggestion: it is helpful to print team names on computer labels so that they can be stuck on each
week. These names are to be in alphabetical surname order.
•
•
Any player joining the team during the year needs to be added to the back of the scorecard.
Any player from a lower team playing for your team must be marked on the scorecard in
the appropriate place (including their grade)
The coach has been given a form to pass these details on to the club registrar at the end of each
round.
PROCEDURES GOVERNING THE AWARD OF TROPHIES
(ANC Bylaws Section 8.1)
•
•
•

• It is important the process is transparent and well understood
• It is recommended that the votes are sealed and not opened until the end of the season
• This allows the votes to be awarded independently to the previous week's voting

the season

envelope for Fairest and Best voting. This way all families have an opportunity to be involved in
the process.

given to the coach. Suggested fairest and best voting forms are enclosed at the end of this guide.

Team management is an enjoyable role and doesn't have to be too demanding. The best advice is to
be organised and delegate!
Remember that you are not on your own. If you have any questions or would like advice at any
time, please don't hesitate to ask any members of the committee and we will try to assist you.
Questions can also be directed to your Team Coordinator who will also help wherever possible.
And now the most important advice of all - Have Fun!
Enjoy the Netball season and remember:
The difficult is easy but miracles take a little longer!!
Even for a team manager!
