Your MAGS Board - A Winning Team
MAGS welcomes our new President, Al Werking, and welcomes back our Board Members! Al inherits a
winning team with this Board, a team which made my four years as MAGS President especially rewarding.
Dot Reed, FirstVice President and Membership Chair, worked tirelessly to maintain a steady membership.
She has been assisted by Susannah Brooks, Stumped Roots Chair, who also indexed and put in book form
several years' issues of Der Kurier..
Betty deKeyser, former Second Vice President and Programs Chair (now Member-at-Large), effectively
planned and organized the programs for our fall and spring meetings in a timely fashion, which facilitated the
effective publicity work of our Corresponding Secretary, Marilynne Ocando assisted by Member-at-Large Jo
Boroff. Inadditionto her duties as Corresponding Secretary, Marilynneorganized our mailing lists. Gail Komar,
MAGS Treasurer, flawlessly kept our finances in order. Always willing to pitch in, Gail helped Joan Sheviak,
MAGS's Registrar, execute program logistics. All ofthe above named persons coordinated the MAGS luncheon
and booth at the NGS Conference in Richmond. These ladies make MAGS look good!
Deyerle Atkins, our Recording Secretary, didn't miss a beat while recording minutes at Board Meetings and
the General Meetings. .Merl Arp, DerKurier Editor, put the newsletter together and coordinated with Dot Reed
to ensure its timely delivery. Carl Shrader, Administrator of the Lending Library, and John Humphrey, past
Member-at-Large and now Second Vice President, have been "can do" achievers on tasks beyond their normal
duties. Ed Winner continued to recruit MAGS members to use his Surname Index Program, the computerized
program that puts researchers investigating the same surnames in touch with one another. And MAGS owes
special thanks to Bev Hoch, Edythe Millar, and Shirley Forrester, MAGS Historian, Queries Chair, and Ahnentafel
Chair, respectively. These ladies have long demonstrated their dedicated service to MAGS members.
Running a national organization as large as MAGS is a complex task because of the multiplicity of services
and activities, coupled with the fact that our Board members are scattered over a wide area. But thanks to the
professionalism of these talented and dedicated people, MAGS remains an organization that has served and
continues to serves its membership well. It is now poised to enter the new millennium stronger than ever.

PENN'S WOODS REVISITED -
Our thanks go to many for the MAGS Fall
Meeting: to Betty deKeyser and John Humphrey,
The MAGS Fall Meeting at Trappe
A full day in an historical setting made a
lovely backdrop for the MAGS 1999 Fall Meeting at
Trappe, Pennsylvania, on October 23. Three knowledgeable speakers gave informative talks on the
Pennsylvania State Archives, Germans in Bucks
County, and Mennonite relations with other
churches.
In a slide presentation, Jonathan Stayer, a
Penn State Archives employee, reviewed the many
resources the Archives has to offer. These records
are available for research in the Archives Search
Room, 3rd and Forster, in Harrisburg, PA. Stayer
suggested Robert M. Dructor's Guide to Genea
logical Sources at the Pennsylvania State Archives
(1968) as a detailed outline of Archives' holdings. In
a second lecture, Stayer reviewed the published
Pennsylvania Archives, warning researchers to dig
further than this valuable source because
omissions and errors; in that multi-volume work.
of
Frances Waite, library assistant for the
Spruance Library of Bucks County, gave an over
view of German immigration into Pennsylvania and
especially to Bucks County. Waite said that by
1775 to 1778 about two-thirds of Upper Bucks
County inhabitants had German or Swiss heritage.
Next, Dr. John Ruth gave entertaining and
informative perspectives on Mennonite settlement in
the region. Waite's and Ruth's presentations greatly
helped attendees understand the historical area they
were visiting.
Nearby sites were specially opened for
MAGS attendees, including the historic Old Trappe
Church built in 1743. Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg,
patriarch of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America, founded this church after immigrating in
1742 from Germany. Those attending were also
able to tour Muhlenberg's house and the historic
Dewees Tavern. Some attendees whose roots go
program arrangers, and Susannah Brooks, for
arranging entry into these historic sites; to Pastor
Herbert Michel of the Augustus Lutheran Church, to
Dr. John Shetler, and Dr. Ivan Hess, for their tours of
the Trappe Church, Dewees Tavern, and Muhlenberg
house respectively.
We owe special thanks to Joan Sheviak,
MAGS Registrar, and Marilynne Ocando, Corres
ponding Secretary for making available the many
handouts which provided information on the historical
sites of the area. Vendor Jane Adams Clarke of the
Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania added free
handouts on research in the area. The brief business
meeting included installation of officers of the new
MAGS board. The day was topped off with s
sumptuous lunch and a dozen door prizes.
Thanks to These Vendors and Donors!

door prizes and literature. Your participation is very

BENNERs On Fraktur
RayBennerasked about BENNERs on fraktur. Iforwarded Rayinformation from several fraktur having
the name BENNER. Data from a few examples are included here. A taufschein (baptism certificate) in the
collection of Martin Amtof Mt. Rainier, Maryland, mentions BENNERs. Itwas made for Georg BENNER, son
ofSamuel and Hannah (WEICKEL) BENNER. Georgwas born April 5,1855 in Upper Milford Township, Lehigh
County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized May 6,1855 by Pastor KESSLER. Sponsors were Peter and Susanna
SCHULER.
Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has a taufschein made for John HAMOR,son
of Allen and Catharina HAMOR. Catharina was the daughter of Paul BENNER. John HAMOR was born
November 20,1796 in Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. No baptismal information is given.
A taufschein made for Anna Elisabeth MUELLER says Carl and Elisabeth BENNER were sponsors at
Anna Elisabeth's baptism. Anna Elisabeth was bom November 20,1784 in Lebanon Township, DauphinCounty,
Pennsylvania. She was baptized by Pastor MELSHEIMER on December 31. Her parents were Johann Georg
and Maria Susanna MUELLER. This example is pictured in The Folk Tradition: Early Arts and Crafts of the
Susquehanna Valley (p. 62), published in 1982 bythe Roberson Center for the Artsand Sciences, Binghamton,
New York.
The whereabouts of a taufschein made for Elisabetha BENNER is unknown. Elisabetha's parents were
Henriy [sic] and Barbara (WAMBOLD) BENNER. Elisabetha was bom in Franconia Township, Montgomery
County, Pennsylvania, on April 12,1807. She was baptized June 7, 1807 in Rockhill Township, Berks County,
by Georg ROELLER. Sponsors were Ludwig and Elisabeth BENNER.
The Free Library of Philadelphia has a taufschein made for Jacob BENNER, son of Johannes and
Elisabeth (ZIEGENFUSS) BENNER. Jacob was bom February 28, 1805 in Rockhill Township, Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. He was baptized by Pastor ROELLER (no date given). Sponsors were Johan Jacob and Maria
LUTZ. This example is pictured (#71) in ThePennsylvania German Fraktur of The Free Library of Philadelphia,
published in 1976 by The Pennsylvania German Society and The Free Library of Philadelphia. A second example
is also pictured there (#510). It was made for William Benjamin, son of Johannes and Elisabeth HINKEL.
Elisabeth HINKEL'sfather was Ludwig FLUCK. William Benjamin was bom May 12,1844 in Richland Township,
Bucks County. He was baptized June 26, 1844 by Pastor KEMMERER. Sponsors were Ludwig BENNER and
Maria Anna HINKEL, both single.
A Bible record in a private collection was made for Jacob and Ester (BENNER) LANDES, who married
on September 8,1839. Jacob was bom August 11,1816. Ester BENNER was bom March 29,1816. They had
two children. Maria was bom March 23,1841 and William was bom October 8,1843. Ester died August 22,1846
at age 30 years, 4 months, and 24 days. A month later, on September 25, five-year-old Maria died. Jacob
LANDES married a second time to Rebecka KINDIG on June 25,1859. They had a stillborn daughter in 1860
and a second daughter named Eliesabetha LANDES, who was born May 9, 1862 in Upper Milford Township,
Montgomery County. Death dates are given for what may have been Jacob LANDES's parents, although the
record does not make that relationship clear. It says Abraham LANDES died February 14,1855 at age 72 years,
3 months, and 23 days. And Maria LANDES died February 9,1859 at age 73 years, 5 months, and 4 days.

An Overlooked Source: German-born Account Holders in the Freedman's Saving and
Trust Company
Compiled by Susannah E. Brooks
Asgenealogists wehave a tendency to categorize recordsbytimeperiod, recordsource, or ethnic
group. In many casesthisnarrows our searchandhelps to pinpoint the recordswe needto find specific
information about our ancestors. In other cases it causes us to overlook valuable sources ofinformation,
because the records do not fit into our parameters. A case in point is the records of the Freedman's
Saving andTrust Company, especially the signature cards."Amongthe most underused bodiesoffederal
records useful for AfricanAmericangenealogicalresearch are the records ofthe Freedman's Savingand
Trust Company."1 Theserecords are almost entirely overlooked by those doing European immigrant
research. Immigrants, who were born in Germany or other German-speaking parts ofEurope, opened
more that four hundred accounts.
The Freedman's Bank was established in 1865 by a group of philanthropists and investors and
chartered by Congress as a place for Black soldiers to save their bounty payments, pay, and bonuses.
Because many slaves had been denied the right to learn to read and write, a signature was often useless
as a means of identification. Therefore, the bank required a great deal of information about the person
(age, complexion, birthplace, where raised, residence, parents' names, names of spouse and children,
siblings names, etc.). When the branches required that the "cards" be completely filled out (not all
branches did), the result is a mini-genealogy ofthe family. The Bank became the bank for the military in
a few cities and the soldiers were the first European immigrants to open accounts. Ofthe signature cards
that survive, various branches had varying numbers ofGermans opening accounts (from 4 in Shreveport,
Louisiana to approximately 240 in New York). The New York Branch passbooks included information
about bank rules, etc. in English, German, and French, so it is obvious that this branch intended to attract
immigrant depositors. The New York Branch signature cards are the most complete, asking, in addition
to the required questions, "how long have you been in the US; age and location ofparents, siblings, and
grown children; name of husbands ofmarried sisters or daughters, and amount of initial deposit." For
the researcher lucky enough to have an ancestor (or one of his/her immediate family members) who
opened an account in the nine years the bank existed (1865 -1874), this may be the place to find the hints
needed to determine birthplace, date ofimmigration, or location ofa sibling who vanished. The weakness
ofthese records is the information was dictated to a bank employee, who had little knowledge ofGerman
names or geography. Like other records ofthis era the spellingis creative at best. Often the records are
incomplete (Baltimore branch records are consistentlyincomplete
As space permitscopiesofinformationfrom individual signaturecards ofpersons born in Germanywill be printed
in Der Kurier. "Germany" will include the various German states, Alsace in France, Switzerland, Poland,
Bohemia, and Austria. The compiler has attempted to copy the records exactly at they were written on the signature
cards. At a later date other records, such as letters and questionnaires completed by a few German-born account
holders, will be included in articles in Der Kurier. (continued next page)

Nemesis At Potsdam: The Expulsion of
the Germans from the East
by
Alfred M DeZayas.
Revised edition available from Picton Press, P.O. Box 250,
Rockport, ME 04856. Soft-cover, 6"x 9", 270 pages,
photographs, maps, illustrations, complete index $23.95
postpaid.
Ethnic cleansing is not a term or process new to the
late twentieth-century - in central and eastern Europe
it has been going on for centuries. America and the
world have taken note of the purging in Serbia in this
decade, but the West knows little of the cleansing that
took place in eastern Germany, Poland and
Czechoslovakia at the end of World War II. Russian
and eastern European troops, with full knowledge of
the American and British governments, expelled
fifteen million German-speaking men, women and
children from east and central Europe. Two million of
the fifteen million German civilians died during the
expulsion.
Alfred M. DeZayas in his book Nemesis at Potsdam
chronicles the details of the horror and the American
complicity. He discusses the genesis of the OderNeisse Line which fixed Germany's eastern border.
Zayas goes on to note the transfer was not as "orderly
and humane" as had been decreed in the Potsdam
Accord. In 1945 the Times reported that Berlin
hospitals "made the sights of the concentration camps
appear normal.''
For Americans whose German roots are in the east,
this book is a must if somewhat disturbing read.
This three-volume publication is the first state-wide
community service project compiled by the AMHNYS,
an attempt to inventory all the cemetery sites in the
entire state. This work includes name of cemetery,
location, dates of first and last burial, type of cemetery
(private, religious, military, etc.), whether active or
inactive or deserted, and name of contact person.
Some entries note number of grave-sites, Rev. War
burials, etc.
The data is organized alphabetically by county, by
towns and cities within each county, and by cemetery
site within the smaller jurisdiction. The Table of Con
tents shows in which counties the cemeteries of the
five boroughs of NYC are listed. Volume I includes
the counties of Albany through Livingston; Vol. II
Madison through Schuyler; and Vol. Ill Seneca through
Yates.
A researcher will likely need all three volumes in order
to access the data, since the Table of Contents is in
Vol. I and the Index is in Vol. III. The coverage is
excellent for some localities, but absent or uneven for
others. Some locations were listed but noted as not
participating. Other localities were neither listed nor
noted why they were missing. For example, the City of
Binghamton has several cemeteries but city or its
burial sites are not mentioned. Appendix B of Volume
III includes An Inventory Addendum Request Form )
so that additions and corrections may be made to the
original inventory.
A word of caution about using the Index. It is compre
hensive but it has a glitch. Be sure to look up your
entry twice in the Index, once in the uppercase list and
next in the lowercase list which follows. This was

Gen. John Stark begins with the memoirs of John
Stark, who was bom in New Hampshire on August 28,
1728. He was the son of Archibald and Eleanor
(Nichols) Stark of Scotland. An addition to his memoirs
notes that Stark married Elizabeth Page, who was ten
years his junior. Stark lists children bom to him and
Augusta County in Virginia was established in 1738.
Originally, it covered a vast area referred to as the
"utmost limits of Virginia," which meant its western
boundary was the Mississippi River. The heart of the
County was the Shenandoah Valley, which was first
explored by Alexander Spotswood, who served as
Governor of Virginia from 1710 to 1723. In 1716,
Spotswood lead a party called the "Knights of the
Golden Horseshoe" over the Blue Ridge into the
Elizabeth, and the author of the book, Caleb Stark,
follows this list with this comment: "The Stark family is
supposed to have originated in Germany."
Stark relates his capture by Indians in 1752, his
running the gauntlet, and his life among Indians. He
further details his activities in the French and Indian
Wars where he fought with Captain Rogers, and his
Shenandoah. From their accounts, settlers east of the
activities in the American Revolution. His memoir is
Blue Ridge began to take note about "this lovely and
fruitful Valley," and were soon attracted to settle in it.
In 1732, sixteen families from Pennsylvania settled
near today's Winchester. That year, Jost Hite and
others settled on a 40,000-acre piece of land in the
Valley. Unfortunately for German researchers, Jost
Hite is given less attention in the eariy narrative
concerning Augusta County than are other eariy
inhabitants - especially those of British ancestry. The
author especially covers the history of John Lewis,
whose French Huguenot family settled in Ireland prior
to immigrating to America. He details information
about the Koiner family, originally from Wurtenburg,
and the Hanger family from Germany, but most
families he discusses are of British and Irish origin,
including Tates, Baldwins, Bells, Cochrans, Crawfords,
followed by correspondence between him and such
notables as George Washington, Ethan Allen, Horatio
Gates, John Hancock, and Thomas Mifflin. The corres
pondence, in turn, is followed with a biography of John
Stark's son, Major Caleb Stark (1759-1838), Captain
Robert Rogers of New Hampshire, and Captain
Phinehas Stevens.
This book focuses on early New Hampshire history, so
the German researcher looking for ancestors in the
Mid-Atlantic states will find little help here. However,
those wanting to learn more about the history of the
French and Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War
will find this book most interesting.

The value of this book to German researchers is not in
family history. Instead, it provides a frame-work for
understanding the early history of the Shenandoah
Valley where Germans settled in significant numbers.
