The first of the Ten Commandments: I am the Lord who brought you out
from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage implies two main messages:
1)
G-d’s
name
is
associated with the concept of freedom and the rejection of slavery. It teaches
us that the worst violation to human dignity is enslaving our fellow human
beings.

This

us that what we

house of bondage. They could not perceive the idea of being free. They were
physically liberated but emotionally they were still slaves.
This reminds me of a story David Ha-Reuveni mentions in his diary (from
the 1520s). A major theme of this diary is slaves’ behavior. They often disparaged and slandered each other to their patron, they
were aggressive to each other, and competed to please their owner. These adult men and women who lived in distress were not
able to cooperate.
In this regard, I found the following account remarkable. A gigantic strong slave escaped; Ha-Reuveni could not afford to
lose his property and he offered a high reward to whomever could find his slave. Ha-Reuveni’s anger was such that he lashed his
slave with large rods and broke three such rods on his slave. Ha-Reuveni tells us that the slave’s body swelled so severely that he
was immobilized for three days.
While reading this account, I wondered why this strong slave did not react against his weaker patron. Why did this slave
allow his patron to hit him with such violence? It is clear that this strong gigantic slave’s weakness was his mind set. Slavery was
embedded in his mind and inhibited any reaction against his aggressor. He could react, but his state of mind prevented him from
doing so.
How can we get rid of our slave mentality? The Torah offers us an unambiguous answer: Education (Ex. 13:8): And you
shall explain to your child on that day (Pesach), ‘It is because of this (learning to be free), the Lord did for me when I went free
from Egypt.’ Indeed, zekher le-yetziat mitzrayim, remembrance of the coming out of Egypt, is the central leitmotiv in the Torah.
It is reiterated twice in our daily prayers, including on Yom Kippur.
The Haggadah of Pesach tells us: Go and learn. Definitively, the account of the coming out of Egypt has a main aim — to
teach us that it is a mitzvah to learn to be free and to teach this fundamental life objective to our children.

March came in like Purim and out like Passover (sorta).
This year the Purim dinner was well attended and the

Rapkin, for organizing the Family Megillah reading. The
end of March was dedicated to preparing for Passover. The
children have been learning the Four Questions, blessing,
and songs to bring to your family Seder table.
We will be on Spring Break beginning Wednesday,
April 5th, and returning to class on Wednesday, April 19 th.

We need congregational participation for Oneg and Kiddush sponsorship!
Do you have a Yahrzeit coming up or a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, birthday, or any occasion to sponsor an ONEG/KIDDUSH?
It doesn’t have to be a fancy feast or expensive. Be creative, prepare the food in the FJCC kitchen, pick up kosher food at
ShopRite, or simply send in a check and the shopping will be done for you. Please call Deborah in our office 782-6410 or email
[email protected] and let her know what date you will sponsor.
