It teaches us that the worst violation to human dignity is enslaving our fellow human beings. Elected Trustees: Lifetime Trustees: 2) Egypt, then the most Jerry Atlas Jack Forman civilized superpower, is called house of bondage. This teaches us that what we Scott Byne Dan Gross call civilization is not necessarily synonymous with freedom. Jim Fox Zel Gerstein Richard Frank Ed Mehrlust Also, regarding the partaking of the Pascal Lamb, in Exodus (Ch. 12), we Judy Gold Howard Nifoussi read: If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with Marsha Goldstein Phil Stern their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. Alan Hylton Larry Wissner This verse teaches us that freedom, symbolized by the Pascal Lamb, can be Marvin Jacobson Michael Wolf Nathan Lefkow Ruth Wolf achieved only in the spirit of solidarity, and that individuals are imbued with Jonathan Nemeth meanings only in a context of a community, as words attain a syntactic meaning Ronald Ort Sisterhood President: only when associated with other words. Alan Radzin Reena Gold Kamins Freedom is primarily a state of mind. In many instances, the Torah Sharon Rednor mentions that soon after their liberation, the Israelites attempted to return to their Neil Wolff Bulletin Editor: Flo Newrock house of bondage. They could not perceive the idea of being free. They were physically liberated but emotionally they were still slaves. This reminds me of a story David Ha-Reuveni mentions in his diary (from the 1520s). A major theme of this diary is slaves’ behavior. They often disparaged and slandered each other to their patron, they were aggressive to each other, and competed to please their owner. These adult men and women who lived in distress were not able to cooperate. In this regard, I found the following account remarkable. A gigantic strong slave escaped; Ha-Reuveni could not afford to lose his property and he offered a high reward to whomever could find his slave. Ha-Reuveni’s anger was such that he lashed his slave with large rods and broke three such rods on his slave. Ha-Reuveni tells us that the slave’s body swelled so severely that he was immobilized for three days. While reading this account, I wondered why this strong slave did not react against his weaker patron. Why did this slave allow his patron to hit him with such violence? It is clear that this strong gigantic slave’s weakness was his mind set. Slavery was embedded in his mind and inhibited any reaction against his aggressor. He could react, but his state of mind prevented him from doing so. How can we get rid of our slave mentality? The Torah offers us an unambiguous answer: Education (Ex. 13:8): And you shall explain to your child on that day (Pesach), ‘It is because of this (learning to be free), the Lord did for me when I went free from Egypt.’ Indeed, zekher le-yetziat mitzrayim, remembrance of the coming out of Egypt, is the central leitmotiv in the Torah. It is reiterated twice in our daily prayers, including on Yom Kippur. The Haggadah of Pesach tells us: Go and learn. Definitively, the account of the coming out of Egypt has a main aim — to teach us that it is a mitzvah to learn to be free and to teach this fundamental life objective to our children. 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Congregation, created a circle in front of the aron, and Rabbi Malki led This month it was a treat to share the Seudah Shlishit, them in singing Eliyahu Hanavi and Shavuah Tov. the third Shabbat meal together.
