Greetings,

QRC consists of 17 acres right on a State Route and we receive
lots of visitors who are beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike.
From places like Alaska, South America, Scotland, Africa, and
from many US states. Many times visitors say things like “I saw
your catalog” or “I looked at your web site and had to see this
place”. Also common questions from first timers include “What
is this place?”, “What do you do here?”, and my all-time favorite,
“Is this a bee farm?” Yes, I answer, we plant, sow and harvest
honey bees here! Some of the more humbling comments are,
“You are living my dream,” or “What a beautiful place”.
This is in no way a normal business, what sets us apart from
99% of all other businesses is that we are a bee and beekeeping
supply company. But with the popularity of beekeeping in the
last 10 years, it’s not unusual to see a small bee supply business
pop up occasionally. But QRC is unique even among bee
oriented companies and that is the reason for the comments
listed above. For those who order online and have never been
here, the parking lot is in front of the business, which in itself
attracts attention in this rural Amish country setting. You can
also see fallow deer, zebu cattle, and mouflon sheep from the
road and one of the most eye-catching is the flock of 200 plus all
white racing homers flying overhead most of the day. A closer
inspection of QRC will reveal Artic fox, miniature horses,
Katahdin sheep, several color variations of peacocks, muntjac
deer, several different breeds of chickens, Palawan peacockpheasants, doves, pot-bellied pigs, pigmy goats, turkeys, rhea,
flying squirrels, Barbary partridge, alpacas, and we must not
forget the bees. We do several tours a year here, mostly church
and school groups, some boy/girl scout troops too. We also host
an annual Beekeeping Field Day that usually attracts about 200
attendees every year. This year Field Day will be June 3rd; it’s
easy to remember because it is always the first Saturday in June.
And as always it is free to all who attend, and everyone is

We have a lot of help with maintaining the property, it is not
something we can do ourselves. My brothers Barry and Gary help
with mowing and fixing whatever needs attention. Our daughter
Lacey, husband Daryll, and grandchildren are always in attendance.
Just yesterday Lacey and I were both kicked and spit on while trying
to remove a halter from an alpaca, they aim for the face and yes they
are accurate. Fallow deer bucks are in rut during the late to early
winter and feeding them can be very exciting on occasion, one eye is
always on him while in the pens. We also have at least one bull
around for the zebu and these can never be trusted, you always want
to know where he is at all times. Rams can and will mow you down
like a bowling ball, I like surprises but none of the above would be
considered a pleasant surprise under any circumstances.
Education is a major thrust of our business, and yes we do sell
beekeeping supplies. Twenty-two years of retail sales and service, we
are the largest supplier of California packages bees in the east, semi
loads at a time. These are the best bees in the business, guaranteed
Small Hive Beetle free (NO ONE ELSE WILL MAKE THIS
STATEMENT).
The front cover of our 2017 catalogue features our 8-year-old
granddaughter Ella and our new line of Bee Kids ™, Beekeeping
Supplies for children. It is intended to make the whole beekeeping
experience a little more child friendly, under adult supervision of
course. Taking the time to educate our future generations is vital to
the honeybee industries.
You should be passionate about what you are doing in order to be
successful and we try to be. Our customers, some of which we have
known for many years now are more than customers, “they are
friends”. These are the people that help make this business the
success it is. Of course there is no substitute for family; there is only
one of those. Our greatest appreciation is reserved for the one who
made this all possible, Jesus our friend and Savior.
Guest Speakers:
Earl and Carol Hoffman
Everything we do in beekeeping today needs to have an emphasis on honey
bee health or an underlying element to that effect. With this concept in mind
this year we are privileged to announce that we will have Earl and Carol
Hoffman speak at our 23rd Annual Field Day event. The Hoffman’s live in
Michigan and have been beekeepers for 24 years. They own and operate
Essential Honeybees LLC, and are Master Beekeepers. Carol has a Bachelor
of Science in Psychology and Earl has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical
Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Manufacturing. Earl taught the
Southeastern Michigan Beekeepers Association Bee Classes for several years
and he also served on the EAS board as state delegate for 5 years.
After a number of colony losses during the winter and having the bees tested
it was determined those losses were caused by Nosema. Determined to do
something about it Earl started Strong Microbials Inc. and performed field
trials and research at their home bee yard to help develop a microbial that
would be specific to honey bees. Blind study tests completed and Nosema
counts low and winter losses equally low and manageable, Earl is now
making Super DFM Honeybee (Direct Fed Microbial) available to the public.
Earl and Carol will be teaching at our Field Day and doing demonstrations in
the field on how to use this product.
Field Day is a unique event with various sessions going on at the same time
it offers something for everyone. We are still working on the event schedule
at the time of this writing. Please refer to our website and Facebook pages
for details as they become available. We always include specific classes for
this event such as, making splits and how to work and examine a colony for
the new beekeeper and others who may be interested. As well as classes for
the more advanced which change from year to year, plan to be with us on
June 3rd. The Lorain County Beekeepers Association and QRC have worked
together for years to make this a family friendly memorable experience.

Vaporization of oxalic acid in beehives is a
proven method of killing both Varroa and
Tracheal mites.
Oxalic acid vapors only kill the mites that are
on the bees (phoretic,) not in the brood. With
the hive almost broodless in late fall or early
winter, that is an excellent time to treat. If the
outside temperature is 40˚F or above, you can
safely vaporize. You want to go into winter with
mite-free hives, as the main reasons for winter
losses are starvation and mites!

wax. (Please visit our website to read about
the research on this treatment.) We
encourage all customers with old or new
equipment to have it treated in hot paraffin
wax. This applies especially to old equipment
where the origin is unknown and disease
questions are unresolved. Treating new
equipment extends its life and provides the
customer with the greatest amount of value
for their dollar.

We have personally used this practice in our own
bee yard for many years now and find it to be the
ultimate plan for all aspects of treating our
woodenware. Customer testimonials have always
been very positive.

HOT DIP:
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; it’s nice to
have a product that others want to duplicate, but do
keep in mind we have been doing this for 15 years and
have already worked out the bugs, pun intended. There
are different melt points of paraffin, which one is right
for this application? Some try to put additives into the
wax, how does this affect the penetration into the wood
and temperature at which the process is accomplished?
Some actually attempt to brush paraffin on and that’s
just laughable. How hot should the wax be to penetrate
the wood? How long should the wood remain in the
paraffin in order to achieve the desired result? What is
the desired result? Is the temperature hot enough to
remove any moisture from the wood? Why is this
important? Hot dip done right can be painted over, and
what we like to do, is stain over it. It is not necessary to
paint or stain but to maintain a desired look over time it
is what we recommend.

Quality in package bees is never a
secondary consideration in our business.
For more than a decade Queen Right
Colonies has had a long-lasting
relationship with Olivarez Honey Bees
(OHB), our bee supplier from Northern
California. OHB is commited to producing
excellent quality package bees and
queens.
Each year QRC receives a Certificate of
Apiary Inspection from OHB that is issued
by the State of California Department of
Food & Agriculture. The certificate states,
that Olivarez Honey Bees, Inc. is free from
Small Hive Beetle.
We sell and ship more California packages
in the east than anyone. The Italian and
Carniolan are gentle and great honey
producers, built up in almond orchards and
shaken into packages two months later.
Bred for hygienic tendencies and certified
Small Hive Beetle free. We offer a 3#
package that is a full 3 pounds of bees
with mated queen. Queen marking and
clipping is also available, $1.50 additional
per service per queen.
The bees are transported in a state-of-theart semi; temperature sensitive and
climate controlled environment, insuring
the best of accommodations. Notifications
are sent out via email as to pickup
schedule upon arrival. We also place
announcements on our Queen Right
Colonies Facebook page as well as on our
website, queenrightcolonies.com
Remember to order early, as our
quantities are limited to 3600 packages
this season. When ordering for pickup at
the farm, you can stop in the shop, call or
place your order at our online shopping
cart. Shipping orders must be handled by
our staff, these cannot be placed online.
All shipping orders receive top priority,
shipping out upon arrival via USPS. Priority
mail guarantees a 2-3 day delivery time,
and these packages are insured. Any need
for claims must be made with the
customer's post office. Shipping,
packaging, and insurance fees are 25.00
and up depending on zip code. Packages
must be paid for at time of ordering. There
is a cancellation fee of $10.00 per
package. No cancellations will be accepted
as of March 1. For orders of 25 or more
there is a minimum of a 50% deposit. Call
to discuss large quantity orders. No
discounts on credit card orders.
Arrival of packages is scheduled for mid
to late April. Weather permitting we hold
as closely to this schedule as possible.
What an event this has become, happy
beekeepers excitedly taking home their
new packages in anticipation of a great
season of beekeeping. For years this has
been an annual event, covered by several
news outlets. In the spring the buzzards
arrive in Hinckley and the bees arrive in
Spencer - a must see and do for your
bucket list.
