How we play at Malvern
We support Cricket Australia’s “Well played” playing policy and guidelines published in August 2006.
The Sprit of Cricket must be followed on all occasions.

Developing an understanding of the game
o

We endeavour to keep groups together, rather than blend top age and bottom age we aim to keep
friends together
Initial team selection may involve groups of friends playing together in the one team. Our experience
shows that some great friendships for both parents and children are made as the teams move
through the grade together.
We cannot guarantee that all children will play with every friend. We will put groups of friends
together in order to fill team numbers.
The first year in an age group is development, in year two the team competes at a higher level
Basic rules and fielding positions – coaches & managers be active during the game each week

Rotate batting order every week
U11’s: We aim to give every child the chance to open the batting and bat number
11. The order is changed every week. We aim to bat 11 children each week.
U13’s Year 1: We aim to give every child the chance to open the batting and bat
number 11. The order is changed every week. We encourage children to start
building an innings. The top 6 are given priority each week batting a minimum 4
overs in one day games and minimum 6 in two day games.
o In one day games it may not be possible to bat all 11 players.
o In two day games every child must bat up to 2 overs
U13’s Year 2: We aim to give every child the chance to open the batting and bat
number 11. Managers have some discretion to change openers if children do not
want to open. The order is changed every week. We encourage children to start
building an innings. The top 6 are given priority each week. We aim to give them an
opportunity to reach 25 or bat for 6-8 overs.
o In one day games it may not be possible to bat all 11 players.
o In 2 day games we encourage batters 7-11 to get 2 overs batting as a
minimum
LBW rules should be agreed with opposition team prior to the game but should only
be given in U13 after several warnings to a batsmen deliberately blocking his stumps
Rotate the opening bowlers every week – every child should be given the chance to
open the bowling during the season
In U11’s rotate the field clockwise with the bowler coming off the field if more than
11 players are playing and the mid on bowling the next over
In U13’s rotate the bowling to give everyone a minimum 2-3 overs. Be aware some
children will physically struggle to bowl more than 2-3 overs in full day games.
Don’t over bowl anyone. 3-4 over spells are a maximum followed by a decent rest.
o U13’s Year 2: Managers have discretion to change opening bowlers if
children do not want to open bowling but must rotate bowling order every
week
Fielding
 Rotate fielders every over clockwise in U11
 Rotate the fielding positions regularly in U13
Wicket keeping
 Operate with a core group of keepers, about 4 – ask for volunteers.
 Rotate the keeper to ensure they bowl 2 overs per week
New Captains are appointed for every game
