Global Education Committee Meeting
January 27, 2015
3:00 pm in ELM 225
Facilitator: Kelly McEnany, Committee Chair
Members present: Marilee Bush, Gigi Derballa, Melanie Parham, Jennifer Hill, Phyllis Boone, and Valerie
Watts. Members absent were David Dry, John Davis, Vicki Thompson, Lisa Evans, Pete Kennedy, Jonathan
Ross, Jonathan Wise, Cris Harshman, Peggy Bulla, and Brinda Caldwell.
 Budget (see handout at the end of this document): Out of our budget of $2500 we have spent
$2,292.34. We’ve sold 44 calendars with $378.40 going toward student scholarships for Study Abroad
and recouping $501.60 that will go back in our budget to offset the $867.01 initial ordering expense
for the calendars ($880.00 was the total taken in so we broke even plus a little extra). Our budget will
be requested through SPOL, per Rhonda Devan, so we can justify the amount for future fiscal years.
The main thing we need to do is show how our events/programs tie in to earning FTE’s, which we’ll do
online in SPOL through the objectives and outcomes.
 Review of 2014FA Activities:
o Photo Contest/Reception/Calendars:
 Martha Shanks will be picking some of the photos from the contest for permanent
display in the Ferguson Lobby. Zache Hodges, who was the first place winner, will be
one of the chosen.
 We will continue to offer the Photo Contest in subsequent years. It was discussed
whether or not to continue making the calendars or to create note cards instead. Note
cards would probably be easier to sell, as they have no time constraint like calendars
do. People would be more likely to buy more note cards than more than one calendar.
Maybe we could do both?
o Appalachian Music with Coleman & McLean (Rene Ochoa’s classes)
o Global Distinction Program and Workshop
o International Education Week:
 Multicultural Potluck
 Salsa Dance Lessons
 Films
 Study Abroad Info Session
 Documentary/Discussion Concerning Japan’s Educational System
 ESL’s Homeland Exhibit in Hemlock
 Global Ed Book Club: This has been added to the February PD calendar. Books have been purchased
and the first meeting is scheduled for Feb. 4th at 2:00 pm in ELM 225. The offering was capped at 10
and is now closed to registrants since the max has been reached.
 “Let’s Explore Africa” Quiz Show: This is a fun and informative event that has students competing
against each other to see who knows more about Africa. This event was held on our campus in the
Ferguson Auditorium back in July and was hosted by one of our Accounting adjuncts, Sandra
Frempong. Sandra would like to do it again sometime in March. Here is the link to the “Let’s Explore
Africa” website: http://www.letsexploreafrica.net/, which includes a short video from the July show.
o Kelly sent an email to the History instructors to see if they are interested in having their
students participate. No response yet but Kelly will send it out again.
o There is a book that we can buy and place on Reserve in the Library that can be used to help
some brush up on their African trivia.
o Val mentioned that there is a website www.sporcle.com (mentally stimulating diversions) that
you can take quizzes for free on all sorts of topics (chemical elements, maps, etc.). She had
her students take a quiz on Latin countries, where you had to spell the names correctly. You
can create your own quizzes as well.
 Other Business:
o Possible addition of a study abroad trip to Cuba, now that things are changing between our
country and theirs.
o The recipes from the IEW Potluck will be complied and sent out to all. A recipe booklet can be
used as a fundraiser or donate the proceeds to more scholarships for students (A-B Tech
students only).
o There will be a Study Abroad Info Session scheduled on Thursday, February 3 at 1:00 pm and
again at 6:00 pm in ELM 225 (see below for handout). Gigi suggested that we may want to get
the word out by visiting ACA classes. Val is going to Joan Heller’s class. Kelly will talk more
with Gigi about visiting her classes.
o Two PD offerings have been scheduled for March: Challenges and Opportunities in the Global
Classroom; March 4 from 2-3 pm in ELM 225 and Teaching With Global Resources; March 18
from 2-3 pm in ELM 225.
o A possible event involving France and the recent terrorist attack was discussed. Kelly will talk
more with Melanie about setting this up. Everyone agreed to add this to the GE/PD calendar.
Gigi commented that in that same week where 12 were killed in Paris, there were hundreds
(possibly thousands) killed in a Nigerian town by the militant group Boko Haram. Kelly urged
members to let her know if there are people in your area who are history buffs or interested in
current events with a cultural/global theme, to let her know. We can have an official
discussion about it on PD.
o Marilee commented that the Global Ed logo looks very professional and it deserves a round of
applause.
The meeting ended at approximately 4:05 pm.
