Baptism of the Holy Spirit

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT: BAPTISM &FILLING
Main points from last week
• The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a force (not the force either) or an “it”
• He is the third Person of the Trinity equal to and with all of the attributes
of the Father and the Son
• There have been major errors regarding the Holy Spirit throughout
church history
• His work: He teachers, guides, testifies of Jesus, convicts, regenerates,
intercedes and commands
• His personality: He can be grieved, blasphemed, resisted, lied to and
obeyed
• Symbols of the Holy Spirit in Scripture include, a dove, a pledge, fire, oil,
a seal, water and wind
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
“The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs when the Spirit of God
comes upon a believer. The Holy Spirit fills the believer's mind with
a genuine understanding of truth, takes possession of the
believer's abilities, and imparts gifts that qualify the believer for
service in the body of Christ” Greg Laurie
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:38-39
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And
you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for
you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom
the Lord our God will call.”
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:13&30
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were
all made to drink of one Spirit.
30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak
with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Romans 6:3-4
3…do you not know that all of us who have been baptized
into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism
into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in
newness of life.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an absolute necessity in every
Christian's life for the service to which God has called us.
- Greg Laurie
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Your salvation not only guarantees your future, but also the
indwelling Spirit right now, convicting and empowering you
to do what is right.
-Paul David Tripp
Characteristics of the Baptism of the Spirit
• It is for all believers without exception. If every believer is baptized
into the body of Christ at conversion, then there is no exception.
It is not a special select few or an inner circle of believers who are
baptized and the rest of us are second class citizens.
• Each believer is baptized only once – at conversion. The tense of
the verb in 1 Cor. 12:13 indicates a one-time occurrence; it does
not need to be repeated.
• On the Holy Spirit, The Baptist Faith and Message states, “His
presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the
believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ.”
Filling of the Holy Spirit
“From the perspective of daily living and a vital Christian
experience, the filling of the Spirit is undoubtedly the most
important aspect of this doctrine. This is the pure essence of
true spirituality and the basic requirement for growth and
maturity.”
- Dr. Charles Ryrie from A Survey of Bible Doctrine
Filling of the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 5:18
18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.
Instead, be filled with the Spirit
Filling of the Holy Spirit
We cannot expect to have the Holy Spirit’s fullness in our lives
if we are quite content to live without it.
- F.B. Meyer
Filling of the Holy Spirit
But don’t leave me alone, bust down the door to my heart
like it’s Your home Don’t need no keys I’m on my knees
Begging You please I’ve gotta settle this thing once and for
all You got my heart my should You can have it all I’m on my
knees…
Hollyn - Alone
Filling of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:5-6
5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set
on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance
with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
6The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind
governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
Filling of the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law.
Filling of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:26-27
27God, who looks into our hearts, knows the mind of the
Spirit. And the Spirit prays for God's people just as God wants
him to pray. 28We know that in all things God works for the
good of those who love him. He appointed them to be
saved in keeping with his purpose.
