Money and powerful political forces strongly influence the industry’s discriminatory labor practices, minimum wage standard, access to health care, gender inequality, exploitation of undocumented immigrants, and more. Presenter Saru Jayaraman – co-founder and codirector of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and director of the Food Labor Research Center at the University of California Berkeley – will outline a solution to these problems and explain why social justice in the restaurant industry is about more than we might realize.
