Notes Section 2.1
Topics: Polynomial functions, Association types, completing the square, standard form of a quadratic,
vertex form, scatter plot, more on a, h, and k.
Define: Polynomial function, Strong and weak positive correlation, Strong and weak negative correlation
Determine which equations are polynomial functions. For those that are, state the degree and
leading coefficient.
Ex. 1
f(x) = 5x-3 + 17
2. f(x) = -13 + x – 3x2
Write an equation for the linear function satisfying the given conditions. Graph y = f(x).
Ex. 1 f(2) = 4 and f(-3) = 9
Find the axis of the graph of the function. Rewrite the equation for the function in vertex form.
Ex. 1
f(x) = 3x2 + 12x – 4
Ex. 2 f(x) = -2x2 -6x + 8
Ex. 3 f(x) = x2 -4x + 6
Ex. 4 f(x) = 5x2 + 50x + 12
Write an equation for the quadratic function whose graph contains the given vertex and point.
Ex. 1 Vertex (-1,2) and point (0, 4)
