Student Custodian Position Description - 2017 Summer
The Department of Housing & Residential Education at UNC is committed to the education and development of student

Supervisors
Custodial Supervisor, Leads, and full-time custodial staff.
Purpose of Position
To provide custodial services to assigned residential facilities during summer deep clean, weekends, university holidays,
etc. The student custodian shall be on call one night each week for all the residence halls.
Primary Duties
1.
Cleaning - Clean building common areas, offices, conference rooms, various other meeting rooms and special
function areas; entryways, corridors, lobbies, student lounges, elevator cars, laundry rooms, stairwells,
kitchens and outside plaza areas. Trash pickup/removal, vacuum carpeted floors and shampoo when
necessary, sweep, dust and wet mop hard floors, sweep entry ways and outside entrance areas, clean
windows, window sills, water fountains, walls, baseboards and stairwells. Dust and clean furniture, arrange
furniture according to plans, counter-tops and other fixtures, empty cigarette receptacles, sweep/pickup
cigarette butts outside the building,

Restrooms - Daily cleaning and stocking of restrooms; sweep and mop floors, trash pickup/removal, fill paper
and soap dispensers, clean sinks, counters, toilets, urinals, partitions, walls, mirrors, showers and tubs (in
some locations), and disinfect restroom surfaces. Weekly, complete a deep clean of restrooms: thoroughly
clean and scrub shower stall, restroom floors, partitions and all fixtures ensuring restroom is totally
disinfected.

Deep Clean - Student rooms/apartments are deep cleaned when rooms/bed spaces are vacated. Annually in
May/June, the entire custodial staff completes a deep clean of every student room/apartment within every
residence hall on campus. The deep clean consists of thoroughly cleaning bathrooms, showers, tubs, sinks,
toilets, countertops, mirrors, floors, walls, kitchen areas, refrigerators, ovens, cook tops, exhaust hoods,
cabinets, countertops, floor surfaces, windows, furniture, walls, rehang curtains as necessary, wash mattress
pads, remove/wash and rehang shower curtains, change light bulbs, vacuum, spot clean or shampoo carpet.
Scrub and wax hard floors.

Summer Conferences - During the summer months, the residence halls are used for conference guests similar
to a hotel. Student Custodial staff prepares the rooms for the guests and upon their departure, clean and
reset the rooms for the next guests. Preparation of the rooms requires setting fresh linens and bathroom
supplies, setting furniture correctly and making sure the room is clean and presentable. Resetting a room
requires removing soiled linens and trash, vacuuming/sweeping of floors, cleaning furniture and countertops
and ensuring the bathroom sink areas are thoroughly cleaned.
5.
Administration - Employee keeps supervisor informed regarding supply inventory, equipment maintenance or
repair needs. Equipment is used with care, kept clean and stored in designated locations. Custodial closets
are kept clean, organized and well-stocked, but not overstocked. Time sheets and other department forms
are submitted appropriately, legibly and on schedule. Works closely with supervisor, attends classes and
training as recommended or required on work related items. Performs other task as assigned by the
supervisor or other Housing Administrative staff.
6.
Customer Service - Student Custodial staff works closely with residence hall directors, and resident assistants
(RA’s) ensuring buildings are kept clean and safe for all occupants. They work closely and follow-through with
maintenance personnel to take care of any problems that arise due to maintenance and repairs to ensure the

overall operation of the building is maintained
Other duties - The Student Custodian is expected to attend in-service training and staff meetings throughout
the year. He/she shall communicate with fulltime custodial staff in his/her assigned building every Monday
regarding the past weekend’s activity. Shifts run from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with a half-hour lunch and two
fifteen minute breaks. Breaks will be at 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM, lunch at 11:00 AM. Breaks must be taken in the
respective campus breakroom in which the student custodian works.

Conditions of Employment
•
Must be a registered UNC student for a minimum of 6 credit hours.
•
Required to have a 2.0 cumulative GPA at time of employment. Must maintain a 2.0 semester GPA while in
the position. If a semester GPA is below a 2.0, the staff member will be removed from the position.
•
Must be in good conduct standing with the University and not be on any probationary period through the
conduct sanctioning process.
•
Student Assistant will have on-going feedback and evaluations throughout the course of employment and
must maintain satisfactory performance of duties as well as academic conditions in order to continue
employment.
•
Must be able to lift a minimum of 15 pounds (e.g. packages).
•
Available on weekends
Compensation
•
Hourly Position – $9.80 per hour, Work Study applicants will be given preference
