Definitions
Dementia is a term that covers a group of different illnesses in which there is a progressive and
irreversible loss of mental functioning that results in a decline in the person’s ability to think,
reason and remember. A feature of dementia is the individual and changing nature of the
cognitive, functional, behavioural and psychological effects that occur.
A communication partner is a person who the person living with dementia prefers to
communicate with. This person may be a spouse, family/whānau member, staff member or
friend.
Verification is a process undertaken by a verifier and/or assessor. They may verify authenticity,
the validity of evidence and/or the trainee’s workplace performance.
Culture includes but is not limited to cultures based upon:

age.

class.

disability.

ethnicity.

gender.

sexual orientation.

cultures can include identification with a culture through birth, adoption, genealogy or
whakapapa.
Assessment note
Candidates’ practice must reflect appropriate values, processes, and protocols in relation to
working with Māori, Pasifika and/or people of other cultures, in a range of settings and
environments. In this assessment candidates must describe working with a Māori or Pasifika
person or a person from a culture other than their own.

Task 1: Managing behaviours
For this task you will describe behaviours that may be present in a person with dementia whom
you have observed. You must describe the factors that have could have influenced or triggered
those behaviours, the strategy you used to manage those behaviours and why you chose that
strategy.
1 Describe four behaviours presented by people living with dementia.

Task 2: Strategies
For this task you need to apply six strategies to positively manage behaviour presented by each
of two people living with dementia. One of these two must be a family/whānau of Māori,
Pasifika or a culture other than your own.
Complete all the written parts of this task before asking your verifier to complete the
verification checklist.
