Bluesil★ Bluesil™ Silicones, your solution for building protection www.bluestarsilicones.com Our full spectrum of silicone building solutions Bluestar Silicones⭑ General introduction Bluesil™ products: reliable for a long lasting protection Bluestar Silicones is one of the world’s leading fully integrated silicone manufacturers with application and research laboratories, production sites and sales offices located all around the globe. We focus on developing state-of the art application expertise to help our customers challenge their boundaries. At Bluestar Silicones we’re more than just manufacturers of high quality silicones products. We are dedicated people, world wide located, committed to your success. From technical support to customized formulation, Bluestar Silicones has the people in place when and where you need them. Buildings in stone or mineral materials have a porous surface that tends to absorb water while being continuously exposed to weathering and sunlight. To guarantee the durability and beauty of coatings and surfaces over the long term, silicones provide an ideal solution that has been used and improved over the last 50 years. The outstanding water repellency of our silicone resins prevents damage due to moisture, mildew development, loss of thermal insulation. Their very high vapour permeability allows the material to breathe and let water vapour escape to the outside without causing damage. These unique properties of Bluesil™ products will allow significative cost and energy savings. Bluestar Silicones is dedicated to serving the Building Protection market by building a lasting partnership you can rely upon. A silicone producer for more than 50 years, Bluestar Silicones is committed to serving its customers by respecting all regulatory standards and offering you extensive service, material expertise and helping you in your sustainable development policy. Our teams help you to choose the best Building Protection product. Energy consumption increased by evaporation of absorbed water in untreated materials: ■■ Severe heat loss ■■ Increased thermal conductivity Hydrophobic treatment allows: ■■ Energy / effectiveness compromise ■■ Preserved heat ■■ Optimized thermal insulation The building protection Bluesil™ solutions: unique in its ability to get sustainability and durability Damages due to moisture in building ■■ Penetration of moisture through the wall ■■ Cracks caused by swelling & shrinkage ■■ Damage due to freeze thaw ■■ Efflorescence, aesthetic damages ■■ Development of algae, fungi, moss with health risk ■■ Chemical corrosion of the materials ■■ Loss of thermal insulation Benefits of silicones ■■ Maximum reduction of water uptake ■■ Permeability to water vapour: breathability ■■ Resistance to UV light, reduced efflorescence ■■ No change in surface appearance ■■ Long lasting effect, outstanding durability & protection ■■ Reduced maintenance: cost saving ■■ Thermal conductivity stability ■■ Environmental compatibility UV & chemical resistance Silicone technology: a polymer with outstanding unique properties ■■ Hydrophobia ■■ Gas permeability ■■ Very low surface tension ■■ UV & chemical resistance ➡ beading effect ➡ breathability ➡ spreadability ➡ durability Reduced capillarity Water repellency Permeable to water vapor Treated Silicones have very high water repellency which remains unaffected by changes in temperature and climatic conditions. This provides very low water absorption levels over time which prevent paints to swell or scale, and enable walls to keep their initial aesthetic aspect. Thanks to their outstanding water vapor permeability silicones do not block the surface’s micro-porosity when applied to materials and so, whether in paints or water repellents, silicones let surfaces breathe. Moisture in the material can therefore evaporate from inside to outside resulting in a regular transfer of water and CO2. These water based co binders or additives bring hydrophobicity and allow walls to breathe with: ■■ long lasting protection ■■ durable aesthetic effect ■■ good washability ■■ enhanced thermal insulation Construction materials Bluesil™ BP water repellents are used to protect several type of materials used in construction industry against moisture. Mostly based on solvent free products, their advantages are: ■■ increased global comfort of houses & buildings ■■ improved insulation properties ■■ energy cost savings ■■ contribution to environmental protection 01 01 Invisible but long lasting protection Bluestar Silicones Water repellents⭑ Bluesil™ water repellents for durable masonry protection Over the years, buildings suffer physical and chemical damages caused by water penetrating into building materials. Water vapor Treatment The main technical solution for masonry protection therefore involves creating a water-proof barrier while maintaining the surface’s breathability and porosity. This is achieved by impregnating diluted Bluesil™ silicone solutions into the materials: the silicone forms a monomolecular layer inside the capillaries that makes the pore surface water-proof without closing them completely, and thus with no modification of the initial aspect of the material. Water proofing mechanism Bluesil™ water repellent: an ideal solution for a wide range of applications ■■ Prevent water absorption ■■ Beading effect ■■ Outstanding resistance to ageing agents (freeze, thaw, UV…) ■■ High durability ■■ Very good resistance to acid rains ■■ Optimized thermal insulation ■■ Maintenance cost saving ■■ Preserved initial characteristics of the wall: aesthetics, breathability, … ■■ High protection against efflorescence, algae, fungi development Rain, UV Untreated Capillary: wetting Capillary coated with silicone: no wetting Pollution 01 Bluesil™ water repellent range Water repellents FAMILY Bluesil™ SILOXANES BP 9400 • • SILOXANES EMULSIONS ACTIVES INGREDIENTS (%) PROPERTIES WR224 BP 9710 • 69 100 44 solvent solvent water clear yellowish hazy yellowish milky white 18 18 12 ■■ ■■ ■■ CLAY BRICKS ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ LIMESTONES ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ SANDSTONES ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ MARBLE ■ ■ GRANITE ■■ ■■ ■ MINERAL PLASTERS ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ SILICEOUS BRICKS ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ RISING DAMP ■■■ ■■■ PRIMERS ■■■ ■■■ THINNER* APPEARANCE SHELF LIFE (MONTH) WATER REPELLENT FOR PROPERTIES CONCRETE WOOD ■ Possible ■■ Suitable ■■■ Ideal * Thinner: aliphatic solvents type ■■■ Bluestar Silicones Water repellents⭑ Bluesil™ range easy to use Products in the Bluesil™ range have the advantage to be used diluted before application. Normally we recommend an active ingredient content of between 5 and 8%. Thus, the dilution ratio varies between one part of water repellent for 4.5 to 20 parts of diluent, whether water or solvent according to the water repellent used. Once diluted, the solution is stable for at least one year. The diluted solution can easily be applied by dipping, with a brush or by spraying. Substrate The water repellent performance of the treated materials depends on the quantity applied to the surface. It will only be optimal if a sufficient quantity of Bluesil™ water repellent is applied. The dilution concentration must take account of the absorption capacity of the material and its porosity. Their outstanding durability allows the time between renovations to be extended by at least 50%, which means cost effectiveness. Bluesil™ BP silicone resins and additives are used to enhance the water repellency and breathability of many types of paints and renders either for new constructions or renovations. Used as co-binders associated with polymer dispersions, resin emulsions represent 5 to 50% of the total binder system. Additives provide water liquid resistance and specific properties (such as beading effect, cleanability,...), and are generally added at the end of the formulation at a level between 0.1 to 3% of the total ingredients.
