PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016 – 2017
It gives me great pleasure to present the 2016 -2017 Presidential Report for New Players
Theatre Company Inc, Newlands, Wellington.
The April 2016 AGM saw me elected as President, and I would like to pay tribute to
immediate Past President, Marie Thompson who passed away suddenly at the end of 2016.
Marie was a stalwart of New Players and will be sadly missed. Our elected committee for
2016-2017 was Anne Megget, Jenny Jebson, Lalene Roberts, Phil Saxby, Heather Conland,
and Ross Conland, with Pat Moran officiating as Treasurer. Irene Miller is our Newsletter
Editor outside of Committee. I would like to thank them for their hard work and
commitment to our society. This can be attested by our tremendous output in the last 12
months.
Our website continues to be improved and this year the public will be able to make
bookings using our website. Our Facebook page is up to date and attracting some interest
and followers. The local Wellington Theatre groups also have a Facebook page which we
are part of.
Our June 2016 production was “Oh What A Lovely War” by Theatre workshop Charles
Chilton & Gerry Raffles, with music by Joan Littlewood. This was a challenging
masterpiece! It brought in a lot of new members, everyone worked very hard and many
thanks must go to Director, Ewen Coleman and Musical Director, Anne Megget, for gelling
the whole team together.
Our Christmas Party, held in my home, was well attended and much enjoyed by attendees –
some great stories were shared and some hilarious poems were on offer, this was the last
time we saw Marie who was in her element. A delicious supper followed with lots of
presents. Two workshops were held over the last year, these were well received and well
attended, and it was a great opportunity for members to mix and mingle and above all
have some fun.
At the Antoinettes, in November, New Players won: Best Period Drama, and was nominated
for Best Musical. Meritorious Service Awards were presented to two members of New
Players: Heather Conland for her long involvement with properties and Jean Slobbe for her
work as an actor, make up specialist and Front of House, many thanks - to all concerned!
Last week we had a great turnout for auditions for The Supermarket Sisterhood, by Devon
Williams, directed by Ross Jordan, this is shaping up to be a great production.
Our goals for the next year are pursuing plans to have a lighting box installed for the
Theatre. We are also very aware that we need to progress on getting a workable Green
Room facility also.
I wish to thank the staff of the Newlands Community Centre for being so flexible and
accommodating to our needs, our hard-working members and everyone who has done
anything to help us in the last 12 months. Again I would like to thank my Committee for
their continued support, it’s been greatly appreciated.
