BEFORE YOU APPLY Information about the

Application for 2014
The Danish National Committee for UWC
Selection Committee
BEFORE YOU APPLY
Information about the application form and procedure
TO THE APPLICANT:
To be considered as a Danish UWC candidate, you must currently be enrolled in your first year
of studies at a Danish ungdomsuddannelse or the equivalent. You must be a Danish citizen or
live in Denmark with a Danish CPR number. You must have been enrolled in the Danish school
system for the past two years (children of Danish diplomats and students who have been on
exchange for up to one year are exempt from this rule; please contact [email protected] if you are
not sure if you qualify).
This application form is carefully reviewed by the UWC Denmark Selection Committee. The
application will be the basis for an initial short-listing of candidates for the first round of our
selection process. If you are short-listed, you will be invited to attend a day of workshops and
activities in either Aarhus or Copenhagen. Following the first round we will make an additional
short-listing of candidates, who will attend the second round of selection. This second round
consists of a personal conversation with each candidate. After the second round our final
candidates will be chosen. The final candidates are offered a full scholarship to a UWC college.
The selection process is competitive and candidates are chosen based on social as well as
academic merit and potential regardless of religious, social, or ethnic background. The UWC
experience is not right for everyone and the selection process is designed to help the Danish
National Committee select candidates who have a real commitment to the UWC core values as
well as the ability to cope and potential to thrive at a UWC college. The criteria, which the
Danish Selection Committee uses as a basis for their assessment of candidates, are:
Motivation, Cognitive Ability, Communication and Cooperation, Personal Integrity, and
Resilience. In addition, we have a particular focus on potential for personal development in the
candidates.
The number of scholarship students chosen by UWC Denmark is dependent on the funds of the
National Committee. If the Selection Committee is unable to provide funding for the full number
of suited candidates, one or more applicants may be recommended for a self-financed spot at a
UWC college. Securing a self-financed spot at the UWC colleges is not possible without this
recommendation from UWC Denmark.
Please make sure that you and your family read all the information, so that you understand the
basis on which students are selected.

Application for 2014
The administration of the different colleges generally accepts the recommended candidates, but
reserves the right to decide final acceptance or rejection of any candidate.
TO THE PARENT(S)/GUARDIAN(S):
It is vital that you understand all information regarding UWC and the commitment involved with
the program offered. Information about the selection process can be found on the UWC
Denmark website www.uwc.dk. Information about the IB, individual schools, and their specific
programs and activities can be found on both UWC Denmark’s website and the UWC
International website www.uwc.org.
If your son or daughter is selected as a candidate for a UWC college, they will receive a full
scholarship from UWC Denmark. Parents or guardians of selected candidates will be asked to
make a yearly contribution to UWC Denmark while their son or daughter is away at college. The
size of the contribution will be dependent on financial capability and ranges from DKK 0 to DKK
50 000 per year. The financial background of applicants and their families has no impact on the
selection of the candidate. For more information on this please go to: http://uwc.dk/?id=50.
Parents or guardians are, together with the applicant, responsible for signing this application,
but the decision to apply must above all lay with the applicant her-/himself.
FILLING IN THE FORM
-
You (the applicant) must complete Section 1. This section gives us the opportunity to
hear how and why you, in your own words, think that you are right for UWC and that
UWC is right for you.
Your parents must fill in Section 2 to confirm that they support your decision to apply
for a place at UWC and that you have understood all conditions for applying.
You must print and give Section 3 to someone who can provide a reference for you.
It should not be a teacher or a family member, but someone who knows you well and
is older than 18 years of age. This constitutes your community reference.
You must give Section 4 to two teachers who know you well at your former and
current school. This is your school reference.
Each of your references has a word limit of 250 words and must be sent by the
referee directly to UWC Denmark at [email protected].
You must attach a signed and stamped copy of your academic transcript of your final
primary school exams and your most recent grades from high school.
Note that all the sections of the application must be completed in English.
