EXIT
The Checkout Arena of the future
The situation today: Checkout Arena with only traditional checkouts.
Example of an SCO installation for both basket and trolley customers. SCO Exit secures the area and
makes the customer outflow safe and efficient.
A common SCO installation today: SCO is an alternative for customers using a basket – SCO Exit secures the checkout area.
The Checkout Arena of the future: A mix of different kinds of checkouts and where the traditional
check¬out is only a minor part – SCO Exit is a prerequisite for a safe checkout area.
A new Checkout Arena with greater profitability
Development from the completely traditional personnel-intensive
checkout queue into self-service checkouts of various kinds and
in combination with traditional checkouts is fast gaining ground
around the world. Greater profitability is created through fewer
staff being required to deal with more customers at the same time
in an SCO checkout area.
New security requirements when customers become
their own cashiers
Alongside the new SCO checkouts security requirements change
entirely when the customer is given responsibility for payment and
checkout. The checkout area must be defined and delimited and
a technology that handles basic security with payment verification
and gate release automatically must be built into the Exit solution.
We offer a complete Exit solution – uniquely customised
Our Exit solutions are already tried and tested since we are one
of the pioneers in the extremely fast development of SCO. Our
4
stating point is to create solutions where the customer feels
comfortable and safe and staff can focus on giving fast customer
service. By means of different types of barrier rails and uprights
the customer flow is steered through the SCO area up to the
automatic gates. We offer different solutions for gate opening and
secure verification of purchases. The system of gates and barriers
also eliminates unwanted backflow into the shop through the SCO
area.
a standalone system with same functions. SCO Exit is compatible
with all POS systems on the market.
Our Exit system can be integrated with the shop’s POS system for
verification of payment and gate opening but can also function as
ITAB Shop Products – a flexible and futureproof SCO Exit solution
for the new Checkout Arena.
From active to proactive staff
In an ITAB SCO Exit, staff are even more an active part of the
shop’s work of creating good relations and positive customer
experiences by being the customer’s guide, always ready to lend
a helping hand.
5
Customer-adapted design
Exclusive or frugally efficient – design is part of the
buying experience! Colour and material options provide endless possibilities to give SCO Exit a partly or
completely customer-adapted design expression that
matches the shop’s design concept.
The starting point is our wide basic range of gates, barriers and other
fittings for an efficient, customer-friendly entrance and exit area. And
we can naturally develop and manufacture new, customer-specific
products.
Our latest addition to the range is all-glass gate arms with or without
LED lights.

exit area.
SCO Exit makes it easy for customers to understand and use
the self-service concept
Staff can focus on helping customers instead of watching
them
The aim is to minimise theft and create a psychological barrier to attempting to steal
The self-service concept is relatively new and many customers
are uncertain how to use it. SCO Exit creates a screened-off
space in the checkout line, where the customer can concentrate
on scanning their purchases and pay at the same time as staff are
on hand to help. SCO Exit creates security, service and order for
the customer in the pay and exit situation.
The SCO Exit secured area with automatic gates allows staff to
focus on helping customers instead of making sure that no-one
leaves without paying. Staff can be proactive in their encounter
with the customer the entire time they are working. Our experience shows quite clearly that the encounter between staff and
customer in an SCO EXIT is a positive experience for the customer thanks to the staff’s availability, commitment and guidance.
The whole design of the SCO Exit area with barriers and gates
signals that it is easier to pay than try to get away through the
checkout area. The high level of security with barcode verification
to pass through the exit gates that we recommend is in principle
impossible to manipulate.
SCO Exit’s automatic gates and barriers effectively prevent
customers entering the shop through the checkout area
(Backflow)
A common problem in all checkout lanes is Backflow – customers
entering the shop through the checkouts. SCO Exit’s gates and
barriers effectively prevent spontaneous attempts to go in the
wrong way and into the SCO Exit area.

EXIT
SCREENED-OFF AREA – barrier rails & uprights create a dedicated, secure SCO area.
CONTROLLED GATE OPENING – Automatic passage through gates by one customer at a time and also prevents Backflow.
HIGH SECURITY – Gate opening after the customer has verified his/her purchases by scanning the barcodes.
ITAB Shop Products – our focus is on entrance and exit
solutions
With one of the market’s widest ranges of gate solutions, barriers
and scanners we can tailor unique customer solutions. Short lead
times and efficient, rational manufacturing mean that we can carry
out major launch projects and individual installations at the right
price and always with high quality and technical level.
Barrier rails & uprights
Customers are guided to the gate opening by using uprights and
10
tubular rails that can be simply adapted to the shop’s layout and
that can be integrated with Exit gates and scanner boxes to make
a complete barrier.
Automatic gates
The automatic exit gates are SCO Exit’s natural valve and allow
the outflow of customers to be controlled. Using ITAB’s Exit gates
with adapted software and integrated sensors ensures that customers leave through the Exit gates one at a time.
Secure verification
After paying the customer is given a receipt with a barcode. The
customer scans the barcode at the gate’s scanner box to verify
the receipt and be allowed out. The gates are opened immediately
the customer has scanned the receipt and the system has approved the barcode. Only valid receipts are accepted; the system
thus gives very high security.
SCO Exit is compatible with all SCO installations regardless of
make.

EXIT
How do you wish to control the outflow of customers?
Shop-activated gate opening
Customer-activated gate opening
Manual opening by staff or activated by a sensor.
Automatic opening of the exit gates by the customer.
A simple solution that is achieved by staff checking the customer before opening the exit
gates. Requires constant attendance and monitoring by staff.
Customer-activated gate opening is a central element of the SCO Exit system. Staff must
naturally be able to observe the exit gates but the customer-activated gate opening gives
them the freedom and security to work proactively with customers without needing to constantly guard the exit. This gives a high level of security in the outflow of customers.
Gate opening can be triggered by means of the
following solutions:
•
•
•
12
Fixed ServiceDesk button.
Remote-controlled opening.
Sensor-triggered opening.
Customers can activate gate opening by means of:
•
•
Terminal impulse – the customer has paid and received a printed receipt
Barcode – the customer scans the barcode on the receipt at the scanner

EXIT
Protected customer outflow through the exit gates
SCO Exit is a classic, tried and tested centre arrangement with two exit gates. The gates
are opened protected by the separators that extend into the passage. They protect against
collision with the gates by people passing by outside the checkout area and also clearly
indicate that it is an exit area.
Space-efficient customer outflow
SCO Exit with a very space-efficient solution for a larger checkout area where gate protection is located
inside the checkout area. This solution also means that customers do not go straight out into the passage
outside the checkout area but join naturally and easily – just like an approach road.
Flexible area barrier system
SCO Exit’s wide range of partitions and accessories allows all possibilities to have the
exit gates straight or angled to suit the shop layout and give the most effective outflow of
customers possible.

EXIT
Questions and
answers
1. I have a different supplier than ITAB for my
SCO. Can I still use ISP´s SCO Exit solution?
6. How many staff are normally needed to control
an SCO checkout area?
Yes. ITAB’s SCO Exit can be used with all systems
on the market. Different types of integration are needed, however, depending on system supplier.
Our standard formula is that one person can manage
six SCO checkouts. The exact number varies depending on the shop’s layout and customer flow.
2. What does a GateMaster do?
7. What happens if I lose my receipt and need to
scan to get out?
A GateMaster is simply a computer that communicates with the shop’s POS system and verifies the
validity of the receipt. A GateMaster can control up
to 4 scanner boxes and the same number of gate
pairs. A GateMaster allows all connected gates to be
controlled manually.
3. When do I need a GateMaster?
When the verification of valid receipt function is desired, a computer that communicates with the shop’s
POS system is needed. If the shop does not have
such a computer, a GateMaster is needed to communicate with the POS system and carry out verification
of receipts.
4. How is SCO Exit integrated in the shop’s/
chain’s POS system?
ITAB ScanFlow provides the shop’s/chain’s POS supplier, who is responsible for the integration, with an
implementation document containing all the information required to create the necessary drivers.
5. How do I control closing the gate after it has
received a signal to open?
This is controlled by the software in the exit gate
through double timers: one for final closing that is
activated by a signal to open and that closes unconditionally after time-out and one that is activated by the
photoelectric cell as the gates are passed and allows
several people in the same group to exit together.
18
Shop staff must assist and manually open the gates
to let the customer out.
8. Can I use my receipt more than once?
No. This is to prevent forgeries and the use of old
receipts to exit the shop.
9. How long is a receipt valid for scanning?
There is a preset time limit for how long a receipt
is valid. This is set for each chain of shops during
implementation. ITAB’s standardised time limit is 10
minutes.
10. What happens if I have to force a gate open
without scanning in an emergency?
The gates have a “panic function” that allows them to
be forced open. When this is activated,
an alarm will alert the shop’s staff. After the alarm
has timed out, the gates are locked again automatically.
11. Can the gates be controlled if the shop needs
to be evacuated?
Yes. The right type of signal from the alarm system is
needed, however.
