Intel ISEF OFFICIAL ABSTRACT and CERTIFICATION THE TitleEFFECT OF CARBON DIOXIDE ON TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS BETWEEN AIR AND SURFACE EARTH MODEL Finalist’s Name(s) Thompson, DrewCity and State, Country School Name, Bishop Kenny High School, Jacksonville, Florida Start Typingof thethis Body of Your Here Beginning at the Left Marginof carbon The purpose project is toAbstract determine if changes in the concentration dioxide in the earth's atmosphere has an effect on the overall temperature of the earth. The temperature changes are recorded through the use of thermocouples that measured the temperature gradient between the air and surface of an earth model. The hypothesis being tested is that the overall temperature of the earth’s surface as well as its atmosphere will increase as the concentration of carbon dioxide increases. Category Pick one only-mark an “X” in box at right Behavioral and Social Science Biochemistry Botany Chemistry Results: The results show as the carbon dioxide concentration increases, the earth temperature remains indifferent. However, the overall temperature of the air increases. When the carbon dioxide concentration was equal to 50%, the average difference between air and earth temperature is the greatest. Computers Earth Sciences ✘ Engineering Conclusion: The part of the hypothesis that deals with atmospheric temperature was supported, but the hypothesis that dealt with surface temperature was rejected. This indicates a strong link between the amount of carbon dioxide present in the air and increased temperature in the earth’s atmosphere. Environmental Sciences Mathematics Application: The results of the small scale model (contrary to computer simulations) could be used to explain that some of the earth’s temperature increases are due to changes in the earth’s atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration as a result of airborne waste (i.e. factories, power plants, etc.) Medicine and Health Microbiology Space Science Physics Zoology 1.
