NeighbourPLAN Program Coordinator
job posting
Term: 37.5 hours per week, 3-year contract (with 3 month probationary period)
Compensation: $18.50/hr - benefits are available following the probationary period
Desired Start Date: August 2017
Reporting: The NeighbourPLAN Coordinator is an employee of GreenUP, reporting to the Manager of
Transportation & Urban Design Programs.
Project Background:
In 2013, a national partnership called Active Neighbourhoods Canada (ANC) was formed to bring participatory
planning to 12 communities in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Between 2014 and 2016, GreenUP led an Active
Neighbourhoods Canada (ANC) pilot project in a local Peterborough neighbourhood. Supported by the Toronto
Centre for Active Transportation, City of Peterborough, Trent University, Peterborough Public Health, and a
number of local non-profit organizations, this project used creative and responsive mechanisms to engage
residents who have traditionally been excluded from formal bulit environment planning processes.
Between 2017 and 2020, with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the NeighbourPLAN project will
scale up the ANC process in three new neighbourhoods: Brookdale, Downtown Jackson’s Creek, and Talwood.
Using lessoned learned during the pilot, the NeighborPLAN project will directly support residents as they
develop the tools, confidence, relationships, and language necessary to influence the services and programs
that matter to them. Specifically, this project will work to: (1) support the creation of products that contribute
to concrete enhancements that reflect residents’ vision; (2) engender a sense of capacity among residents to
influence planning and consultation outcomes; and, (3) create more meaningful and consistent opportunities
for engagement.
Key Coordinator Responsibilities:
The NeighbourPLAN Coordinator is primarily responsible for direct neighbourhood-based program
implementation.
1. Planning & Design: Develop a detailed work program that is consistent with our funding commitments,
reflects best practices, and can be adapted to support emergent community directions.
2. Partner Relations: Support strong and effective relations with existing partners and funders, and work to
build new relationships that meet resident-identified priorities in each neighbourhood.
3. Community Engagement: Lead community engagement activities in all three neighbourhoods; work with
residents to establish and sustain unique working groups that co-ordinate activities in each neighbourhood.
4. Event & Activity Coordination: Support the development and implementation of community-building,
planning, and design activities/events in each neighbourhood, based on the direction of the neighbourhood
working groups.
