Project Background: In 2013, a national partnership called Active Neighbourhoods Canada (ANC) was formed to bring participatory planning to 12 communities in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Between 2014 and 2016, GreenUP led an Active Neighbourhoods Canada (ANC) pilot project in a local Peterborough neighbourhood. Supported by the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation, City of Peterborough, Trent University, Peterborough Public Health, and a number of local non-profit organizations, this project used creative and responsive mechanisms to engage residents who have traditionally been excluded from formal bulit environment planning processes. Between 2017 and 2020, with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the NeighbourPLAN project will scale up the ANC process in three new neighbourhoods: Brookdale, Downtown Jackson’s Creek, and Talwood. Using lessoned learned during the pilot, the NeighborPLAN project will directly support residents as they develop the tools, confidence, relationships, and language necessary to influence the services and programs that matter to them. Specifically, this project will work to: (1) support the creation of products that contribute to concrete enhancements that reflect residents’ vision; (2) engender a sense of capacity among residents to influence planning and consultation outcomes; and, (3) create more meaningful and consistent opportunities for engagement. Key Coordinator Responsibilities: The NeighbourPLAN Coordinator is primarily responsible for direct neighbourhood-based program implementation. 1. Planning & Design: Develop a detailed work program that is consistent with our funding commitments, reflects best practices, and can be adapted to support emergent community directions. 2. Partner Relations: Support strong and effective relations with existing partners and funders, and work to build new relationships that meet resident-identified priorities in each neighbourhood. 3. Community Engagement: Lead community engagement activities in all three neighbourhoods; work with residents to establish and sustain unique working groups that co-ordinate activities in each neighbourhood. 4. Event & Activity Coordination: Support the development and implementation of community-building, planning, and design activities/events in each neighbourhood, based on the direction of the neighbourhood working groups. Promotion & Communications: Support neighbourhood-specific event and program promotion, as well as broad-based communications to celebrate and share program outputs. 6. Product Development: Support the development of planning outputs, including a Portrait and Plan document for each neighbourhood, in partnership with the project’s graphic designer. 7. Evaluation & Reporting: Track progress, support program monitoring and evaluation, in partnership with the project’s evaluator; support project reporting and the preparation of reports for the funder. Qualifications: • Educational background in built environment and/or related fields (urban planning, urban design, geography, environmental studies, community development, public health); • Project coordination experience working in the non-prot sector, with proven experience in executing project plans, adhering to project budgets, and meeting project deadlines; • Demonstrated experience in community organizing and/or motivating and bringing people together and building alliances; • Adept at engaging effectively and comfortably with a variety of stakeholders of diverse interests and backgrounds; • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); • Skilled at active listening and creative at solving community-identified problems; • Experience in developing and organizing public outreach events; • Community knowledge and experience in Peterborough is considered an asset; • Experience working in the areas of active transportation and/or community development is considered an asset; • Competence with graphic and layout design software (Illustrator, SketchUp, InDesign, etc.) is considered an asset; • Project administration experience; and, • Be reliable, organized, and punctual.
