Year 3 Curriculum Plan Summer Term
This year we are combining our Literacy, History, Geography and Science into one subject area
called Learning Adventure. We are trying to encourage our pupils to demonstrate a high level
of English writing across the curriculum and hope this will be the best way to achieve this.
Summer 1: ‘Flowing, Glowing Reporters’
In this topic, the children will become news reporters and chat show hosts who report on their
knowledge of all things to do with water. They will be encouraged to look their best, ‘glowing’ as
presenters and ‘flowing’ as writers and speakers. In science, they will study plants and the water
cycle, and in topic, learn about rivers, soil and becoming a news team.
In RE, the children will study Pentecost. As water is an important symbol in the church, they can
begin by looking at why. This leads on to the symbols of the Holy Spirit – fire and wind. As he
‘flows through people’, they learn about the impact of the Holy Spirit on their lives.

Summer 2: ‘Heroes and Villains’
The topic ‘Heroes and Villains’ joins all that is in this Cornerstones Topic with the book ‘Ottoline
and the Yellow Cat’ in Literacy. Children will learn to write mystery stories whilst exploring the
heroic nature of the detectives Ottoline and Mr Munroe as a string of daring burglaries take place.
In the second topic, they will go on to link their shape poems to their topic through art and create
their own poems based on heroes and villains. In RE, the first topic ‘Reconciliation’ look as
choices. How do heroes and villains differ in the choices they make? What choices can we make
for Jesus? The second topic, Universal World looks at Justice and Solidarity and the year can end
with the concept that we can be heroes when we work together and we can work for the
Christian hero Jesus.
As the final topic, between Literacy and Cornerstones there are lots of genre suggestions for
different styles of writing to build an ‘end of year’ bank for teacher assessment. There is no
science, having covered all the topics Year 3 are required to previously. This leaves time for ‘test
week’ for Literacy and Numeracy as well as any revision in science and finishing off required.
