Over the few days we took part in training sessions for our own particular sport including umpiring and coaching and I was able to train with Sue Hawkins, the current England netball coach. In our teams we had various workshops to develop leadership and communication skills and learned how to encourage young people into sport. At the end of the four days there was an award Congratulations to Klara Price and Steve Boarder who are getting married next July. Laura Green and Stuart Horgan recently announced their engagement. Our best wishes go to both couples. The New Season Young Leaders’ Camp Welcome to our new team captains: Leanne Charles (A), Kate Walker (C) and Clare Harris (D). In August Amy Robinson attended a Young Leaders’ Camp in Reading. This camp involved 150 young people from all over the country from three different sports; netball, athletics and gymnastics. Those who applied had to demonstrate their commitment to volunteering and set out their aspirations as a volunteer and show their desire to succeed. With 50 people chosen from each sport the camp had great variety. Amy explains the set up, “We were put into mixed teams, each team representing an Olympic city. This gave us the chance to share ideas and experiences with other Chloe Taylor, Sophie Sherley Dale, Carolyn Andrews, Hannah Jenkins and Joelle Wright. Come back soon! ceremony and I was presented with the award for “Leading by Example”, meaning I had been recognised as demonstrating good leadership skills and living the Olympic and Paralympic values”. Congratulations to Bethan Robinson and Anna Maloney who recently attended trials and have been selected to attend the Surrey U14 Netball Satellite Academy. Goodbye to those going to university – Hannah Rose, Also, welcome to new members – Jamie Joyce, Sarah Pryor, Barbara Thomas, Kerry Goodwin and Holly Cooney. BOS Rally - The B team had a good start to the season playing in the plate final at the BOS Rally on 11 September. It was a three-way final with Coombe and United. Chequers B beat United in the first game. The next game saw Coombe complete a convincing win over United. The final game was then the decider between Coombe and Chequers. It was pretty tense and although we were hot on their heels the time ran out for us to get one more goal. The final score was 6 - 5 to Coombe. The team consisted of Anna Hills, Kelly Rowland, Emma Saunders, Helen Aldred, Verona Clark, Tasha Rogers and Mel Jones. First Match Reports of the Season, Saturday th 25 September Chequers A (19) Roundwood A (39) v You could detect autumn in the air for the first Croydon game of the season. Chequers A put out their new squad to compete against a Roundwood A team still powered from their successes of last season and the Beginning of Season Rally. Roundwood also sported a revised team with the addition of some newcomers strengthening their squad even more. Both teams fought for the lead in the first 2 quarters of the game and, although the scores were level half way through the 2nd quarter, Roundwood had edged the lead at the end of half time. Roundwood A benefited from a squad of 9 and used their additional players well by implementing some strategic changes throughout the game. As a result, Roundwood A managed to pull away in the 3rd and 4th quarters to win the game convincingly. The final score was 39 - 19 with Chequers A missing out on the half score point by just 1 goal. to 57. A great and well fought match. Players player for Chequers Tasha Rogers and most sporting players for Chequers Kelly Rowland with Jackie Sullivan most sporting for Croham. Chequers B (69) v Croham (57) The first match of Croydon Netball League season saw Chequers B take on relegated Croham in the 1st Division. A few new faces to the Chequers B squad started in the line up but it didn’t mean that they were not already a team. A tight first quarter saw Croham take an early but slim lead by one goal, 13 – 14. Coming out in the second quarter Chequers seemed to be the more determined and some great balls in by their WA meant that they could go ahead by 5 goals at half time. Neither team had subs so the same 7 stayed on and battled it out with only one change around by Chequers. The shooters for each team converted their goals each time they received the ball leading to a very high scoring game. The Chequers team although not “fresh” on their legs pushed on and won the game by 69 goals Chequers C (34) Wellcome (47) v On Saturday, 25 September Chequers C played Wellcome in a Croydon League match. Chequers had no substitutes so it would be up to the seven players to take on the challenge. At the end of the first quarter the score was close with Wellcome leading by a couple of goals. The next quarter saw Wellcome go 10 goals ahead. Chequers continued to fight for the game, and was hit by a player who became injured and unfortunately went down to six players for the rest of the quarter. Both Chequers and Wellcome again stepped up their games in the final quarter, but Wellcome won the match in a well fought game with the final score of 47-34. Players Player of the match was Sarah Pryor and Kate Walker. Chequers D (31) Roundwood C (40) v Chequers D first game of the season with a few new faces in the team and everyone adapted well. The first quarter Chequers D were finding their feet and were behind by 4 and although we fought hard and kept the momentum going at the end of each quarter we were 1 more goal down which led to the final score being 40 – 31 to Roundwood. Congratulations to Faye Sheehan who stepped in to play C and played it really well and was then voted most sporting player by Roundwood and Holly Cooney new to the team put in all effort as GK and was voted player of the match by the rest of her team. Chequers E (28) v Warren Z (27) It was the first match of the Croydon League for Chequers and Chequers were determined to start the season with a winning performance as Chequers are in a higher division this season having been promoted last season. There was great team spirit and excellent defending. It was a very tight game, after every quarter there was only a 2 goal difference which made the final quarter very tense and exciting, however due to excellent defending and attacking Chequers managed to pull ahead. The final score was 28 – 27 to Chequers. There was great motivation and the team showed great commitment. Barbara Thomas was voted most sporting player by the umpires and Debbie Jenkins was voted player of the match by her Chequers team mates. Nonsuch League Junior Our U14 team had a good start to the season on 10th October - won one (12-8), lost one (11-15). They played fantastically well as a team. Next league matches on 7 November at Nonsuch. Training As we are still fairly near the beginning of the new season, we need to stress how important it is to keep attendance at training to a maximum. To develop the skills needed it is vital that all team members attend training. Christmas Party This year’s Christmas party will be held at the Tree House in South Croydon on Saturday 11th December. The Great South Run In October this year Pip Rata and Nikki Crowley will be running 10 miles in the Great South Run to raise money for vital research into Harlequin Ichthyosis at Barts and The London Hospitals. Harlequin Ichthyosis is the most severe and frequently lethal form of recessive congenital ichthyosis. The skin of babies born with this inherited condition forms thick hard diamond shaped plaques with deep fissures due to its inflexibility, which increases their susceptibility to infection. It may also cause the eyes, ears, mouth and other appendages to contract abnormally. This makes it difficult for them to feed. It is a rare condition that requires intensive care treatment. The survival rate of children born with this disease has improved over the years, but many will die within days of birth. Treatment will be required for their entire life. Research led by Professor David Kelsell of Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry aims to develop treatment options; promote international research collaborations to strengthen investigations into this rare condition; make prenatal screening tests available; and disseminate clinical best practice. Sam sadly lost his battle against this cruel condition just 5 weeks later on 1st September 2010.
