Make Your First Video Game Outline
Course Description: If you love playing video games, this is
the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-akind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D
platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience,
challenge levels, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just
some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience
necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student created games
will be available on a password protected Black Rocket
website to share with friends and family. Games are only
compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created
after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Students will
work in pairs or teams for most of the program.
Course Outline: 15 hour (5-day) Course Format
Day 1 Goals: Students will be introduced to the concepts of good game design as well as designing their
first video game.
 Module 1: Class Intro + SFL
 Module 2: Grouping, Exploring & Game Design Documents
 Module 3: Choosing Artwork for Sprites
 Module Daily Backup
Day 2 Goals: Student will learn how to create, animate and load sprites in their game.
 Module 4: Introduction to GameMaker
 Module 5: Creating New Sprites
 Module 6: Animating Sprites
 Module 7: Loading Sprites
 Module Daily Backup
Day 3 Goals: Students will learn about level backgrounds and how to edit them in game maker.
 Module 8: Choosing Artwork for Backgrounds
 Module 9: Cutting and Loading Backgrounds
 Module 10: Level Editing
 Module Daily Backup
Day 4 Goals: Students will continue to edit their sprites and game levels.
 Module 11: Continued Game Editing
 Module Daily Backup
Day 5 Goals: Students will finalize and export their custom game maker video game.
 Module 12: Title and Character Select Screens
 Module 13: Adding Music
 Module 14: Finalizing the Project
 Module 15: Exporting Project
 Module 16: Black Rocket Survey (15 min)
 Module 17: Wrap Up & Upload (15 min)
