What's New at
Uplands
It's Tulip Time in Tennessee
Tennessee's temperate climate
with its four gentle seasons is a
gardener's Paradise. Nowhere is
that more evident than at
Cheekwood Botanical Gardens in
Nashville.
Reggae, rock, folk or Bach, the Rolling Stones or
Rachmaninoff - for each of us there are
particular songs or types of music with the
power to awaken our souls and unearth special
memories. Pioneers in the field of dementia
research have found that even those suffering
from severe dementia can often be reached
through music. This is certainly proving to be
true at Wharton Homes, the long-term care
facility at Uplands Village.
When the health care staff at Uplands first
watched Alive Inside!, a stirring documentary
about the work of Dan Cohen, founder of Music
& Memory, they decided to introduce a
personalized music program here. The film
chronicles the uniquely human connection we
find in music and how its healing power can
triumph where medication falls short. It includes
insightful interviews with renowned neurologist
Oliver Sacks and Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of
the Eden Philosophy of Elder Care.
In April the avid gardeners at
Uplands Village residents were also invited to
Uplands will travel to the 55-acre
Cheekwood Estate for a day of
education and enjoyment. One of
the staff horticulturists will share
the story behind creating the most
stunning floral display:
Cheekwood in BLOOM.
Uplands residents will have the
opportunity to learn more about
growing the many varieties of
daffodils, hyacinths, and 100,000
tulips in bloom in the garden and
caring for the flowering redbuds,
dogwoods, azaleas, and
wildflowers now at their peak
along the many paths. They'll also
have the chance to studya wide
selection of plants that can be
grown in Middle Tennessee.
Regaining Optimal Health
Seminar Series
As part of its Regaining Optimal
Health program, Uplands is
offering an eight-session
workshop on Preventing and
Reversing Diabetes beginning on
April 26. The workshop is open to
health care professionals, Uplands
residents and those in the wider
community.
The course is being taught by two
area physicians and a physical
therapist. Attendees will learn
about diabetes and insulin
resistance, oxidative stress and
inflammation, proteins that heal,
epigenetics, and maintaining
healthy numbers through a
healthier lifestyle.
The course is designed not only
for diabetics but also for those
who have been diagnosed as prediabetic or who want to avoid
getting adult onset diabetes.
view Alive Inside!, and soon our Music &
Memory program was off and running. The
Wharton Association, made up of Uplands
members, donated nineteen MP3 players using
some of the proceeds from the four annual sales
it holds every year. Led by resident Don
Dowdey,
Uplanders have begun
volunteering their time to
help the staff create
individualized playlists, often
based on input from the
families of those suffering from dementia. They
also assist elders at Wharton Homes with
listening to the music.
Recently one of the local Rotary Clubs received
a grant to begin a Music & Memory pilot
program in several long-term care facilities in
Cumberland County. Club members were
impressed with the progress Uplands has already
made. The Rotary Club donated a charging
station and thirteen pairs of earphones with
splitters so that staff, volunteers, or family
members can listen along with the elder. They
also provided Uplands with access to the
searchable music database they're building.
Hand in Hand
In addition to viewing Alive Inside! and learning
about the Music & Memory program, all
volunteers at Uplands are offered the same highquality training for delivering person-centered
care to individuals with dementia that is required
of our health care staff. At least forty Uplanders
have been in attendance for each of the six Hand
in Hand video training sessions led by our Home
Health Care nurses.
Why do so many at Uplands take the training
and serve as volunteers for the Music & Memory
program at Wharton Homes? "It's the joy of
seeing an unresponsive elder begin tapping a
finger to the music or breaking into a sudden
smile," says one volunteer, "and knowing that
you're making a difference in the quality of
another's life by helping that person come alive
inside."
