Rule differences (pro, NFHS, NCAA) will be noted. Bonus: Monthly quiz posted last day of month. December 15, 2007 What lies hidden behind (or ahead of) an interference call? Play: Bases loaded, no outs, fast runners aboard, slowrunning batter. Squeeze play with all runners getting a great jump on the pitch. Batter gets the bunt down. They throw home for an attempted force out but R3 is safe. Then they throw to first; batter-runner is out for interference outside the running lane. At the time the ball hit the BR, R1 was beyond second base and R2 was beyond third base. Where are runners placed? Your ruling: R3 safe at the plate, BR out for interference before first base (1st out); R2 was beyond 3rd and R1 beyond 2nd at time of interference: A) Runners stay at third and second because they had advanced there by time of interference. B) Runners return to time of pitch bases because batterrunner was out before reaching first base. Correct answer: A) Runners stay at third and second because they had advanced there by time of interference. B) Runners return to time of pitch bases because batterrunner was out before reaching first base. MLB/NCAA 2-Int. AR 2:“Intervening Play” NFHS 8-2-8: Always return to TOI after int. on thrown ball. Related Play #1: R3, squeeze play. Bunt is good and R3 scores easily. However, BR is out for interference before first base for being out of the running lane. A. Run scores; got to plate before interference. B. R3 must return to third due to the interference. Play #1 Answer: R3, squeeze play. Bunt is good and R3 scores easily. However, BR is out before first base for being out of the running lane. A. Run scores; got to plate before interference. -- NFHS… “A” is correct. B. R3 must return to third due to the interference. --Pro and NCAA… “B” is correct. Related Play #2: R1, base hit. R1 gets in a rundown between second and third. BR fills in and is standing on second base when R1 intentionally interferes with a throw and is called out. A) BR must return to first. B) BR can stay at second. Play #2 Answer: R1, base hit. R1 gets in a rundown between second and third. BR fills in and is standing on second base when R1 intentionally interferes with a throw and is called out. A) BR must return to first. --Pro (7.08b) B) BR can stay at second. --NCAA (2-Int) and NFHS (8-2-8) Final comments: Rule differences: philosophy Good to study interference, but make sure you pay close attention to the details of enforcement Thank you for participating!
