Importance
Times are changing in the 21st Century.
Students need to learn to collaborate,
think critically, communicate well with
others and be creative to meet the new
demands in the workforce.
The answer: PBL and one to one
computing allow teachers and students
to meet these 21st Century goals.

Purpose of the Study
Design a wiki/website that documents the process of
becoming PBL and one to one computing proficient.
Interview teachers and survey them to understand what
their excitement, concerns or fears might be in regard to
beginning the PBL and one to one computing journey.

Literature Review
A. This literature review focuses on first the history of PBL and
one to one computing.
-John Dewey-Constructivism
-Marzano-essential standards and PBL
B. Then it focuses on struggles that teachers encounter during the
journey.
-Donovan and Green- How technology is set up really
matters. Specifically the combination of
using PBL , one to one computing and
good classroom management skills= success.
-ACOT and ACOT2- stages of technology integration.
C. Focusing on ways to avoid barriers and implement PBL and one
to one computing successfully.
-Jason Ravitz- Online guide to PBL and thee buck institute
-Peggy Ertmer- 1st and 2nd order barriers to one to one
computing “ block busting strategies”.
- Hurdles to implementing PBL
- Case study of five teachers using PBL

+ACOT stages of Tech
Integration
Entry Learn the basics of using the new
technology.
Adoption Use new technology to support
traditional instruction.
Adaptation Integrate new technology into
traditional classroom practice. Here, they often
focus on increased student productivity and
engagement by using word processors,
spreadsheets ,and graphics tools.
Appropriation Focus on cooperative, projectbased, and interdisciplinary work—
incorporating the technology as needed and as
one of many tools.
Invention Discover new uses for technology
tools, for example, developing spreadsheet
macros for teaching algebra or designing
projects that combine multiple technologies.

Key Themes
The goal of this literature review is
first to examine the history of one to
one computing and PBL
Then focus on the issues and
concerns in regard to PBL and and
one to one computing.
Then to focus on solutions and
success with PBL and one to one
computing.

Implications
This study will not only help
teachers at the researchers site
but help teachers all over the
nation and world trying to
implement PBL and one to one
computing in their own
classrooms.

Gaps
Ravitz- He created an online
website/guidebook with advice for PBL
and one to one computing available
through the Buck institute. However even
more examples specific to subject and
content areas need to be made available.
Ertmer- More studies need to be done in
regard to teachers in the beginning stages
of the process. She focused on five teachers
already using PBL for a long time however
she suggests a need to study the early
stages of the process.
ACOT2- wants to compile more
testimonies and content specific examples
of the process of becoming PBL and one to
one computing proficient proficient.

Importance and
Justification
As times are changing teachers and
schools need to keep up with producing
students ready to enter a work force
where 21st century skills are required.
There is not enough studies done on the
early process of becoming PBL and one
to one computing proficient.
Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow Today (
ACOT2) want to gain actual testimonies
from the journey of teachers becoming
PBL and one to one computing
proficient.
